TOURISM PLANNING

Planning is the act or process of making or carrying out plans specifically the establishment of
goals, policies, and procedures for a social or economic unit

Tourism policy can be defined as a set of regulations, rules, guidelines, directives, and
development or promotion objectives and strategies that provide a framework within which the
collective and individual decisions directly affecting long-term tourism development and the daily
activities within a destination is taken

Tourism planning is the process of:


1. Gathering and evaluating information to identify and prioritize current tourism development
issues
2. Imagining a desired future state of tourism in the destinations, and
3. Choosing from a number of alternatives for achieving them.

Tourism planning relates to the same basic concepts and approaches as general planning; however,
it is adapted to the specific characteristics of the tourism system.

Tourism policy formulation and tourism planning are directly related to each other as they both deal
with the future development of a tourism destination.

A Tourism Plan is an output of the tourism planning process.

Functions of the committee:


1. Prepare a work plan for the preparation of the tourism plan
2. Formulate the tourism plan
3. Consult with residents and other stakeholders of tourism areas

EVENTS

Purpose of Events:
Close contact communication creates an atmosphere that provides an opportunity for people to
interact and express themselves.

Characteristics of events:
● Unique occurrences that do not happen very often;
● Have a limited duration (happening within hours or days at the most)
● Happen with a live audience in attendance
● Require one or more groups to plan and organize; and
● Staged for a purpose

Celebrate - Eg. Lifecycle Events, Religious rituals and feasts, commemorative ceremonies

Commune - Eg. Reunions, Sporting events, Hallmark events

Convene - Eg. Meetings, Conferences, Conventions

Commerce - Eg. Marketing events, Exhibits and Trade shows, Retail events

Mega events - Eg. Olympics, Football World Cup, NBA


Hallmark events - Eg. Dinagyang Festival, Ati-Atihan Festival

Major events - Eg. Concerts, Music Festivals (madaming tao)

Minor events: Eg. Art Appreciation Talk (bilang lang yung tao)

5. Establish event concept, theme and format

Format: how events are arranged or organized


Ex. seminars, exhibits, team building, concerts, etc.

Theme: makes the message more understandable, more memorable, and more endearing.

1. Destination or Locale – use location as inspiration


2. Popular culture – movies, tv shows, songs
3. Historical/current events – history, war, exploration

6. Deciding on the budget

Budget – must be based on:


1. The budget of previous or similar events
. The budget of previous or similar events
. Marketing projections and estimates
. The expected return on investments
. Type of financing used for the event (borrowed funds, prepayment, existing funds)
. What the host can afford
