TASK 32-11-03-871-801-A01
Introduction
1. General
A. This manual is written to the iSpec 2200 and in ASD Simplified Technical English (STE). The
international SI units of measurement are used in this manual, with imperial units shown in
parentheses.
B. The manual contains data about maintenance on the component in a workshop. It does not
contain data about maintenance on the component when it is installed in the aircraft.
C. Only approved persons with the necessary skills are permitted to do the maintenance procedures
in this manual.
D. Maintenance Task Oriented Support System (MTOSS) task and subtask identification is used in
this manual. The maintenance tasks and other data have special MTOSS numbers for Electronic
Data Processing (EDP). The user of the manual can ignore the MTOSS numbers.

(1) Blend out scratch with abrasive paper; polish affected area with grade 600, abrasive paper.

Subtask 32-11-03-300-002-A01
B. Hard plating

WARNING : IT IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN TO DRINK, EAT OR SMOKE IN THE HARD

PLATING SHOP.

NOTE : Refer to FIGURE 32-11-03-991-002-A and FIGURE 32-11-03-991-003-A.

(1) Remove cadmium plating :
(a) Totally immerse the part in a solution of 150 to 200 g/litre (37.95 to 50.06 gr/in 3)
of No 3 ; NH. 4 in demineralized water at a temperature of 20˚ to 25˚C (68 to
77˚F) until deposit disappears.
(2) Thoroughly wash and dry the part.
(3) Perform a magnetic particle or fluorescent penetrant inspection of hollow shaft.
(4) Grind hollow shaft surface until all scratches are eliminated.
(5) Soak metal in oven at 200˚C (392˚F) for 3 hours.
(6) Mask areas not to be chromium plated.
(7) Apply chromium plating as follows.
(a) Etching bath

NOTE : Etch steel slightly prior to plating to ensure positive adherence of

chromium.
1 Bath solution :
- Sulphuric acid at 600 to 700 g/litre (158.8 to 177.1 gr/in 3) Class B
topping-up water.
(b) Working solution

NOTE : Tank and cathode plates must be made of lead. Part to be plated serves as
anode.
1 ambient temperature.
2 voltage : 4 to 6 volts.
3 current density : 10 to 40 A/dm2.
4 immersion time : 0.5 to 1 minute.

NOTE : After removal of components from the etching bath, the following
operations must be immediately performed to prevent oxidation.
(c) Rinsing
- Rinse with cold running class B water.

Page 6002

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL

(d) Chromium plating

1 Bath solution :
a Chromic acid, 250 g/litre (63.25 gr/in 3) sulphuric acid, 2.5 g/litre (0.632
gr/in 3) class B topping up water.

NOTE : The ratio of Cr03 to SO4 shall be maintained at 100 : 1

b Work condition :
- Temperature of bath, 50 ± 5˚C (122 ± 41˚F). Voltage, 6 to 8 volts.
Current density, 25 to 40A/dm2.
- Thickness of chromium plating 0.05 to 0.1 mm (0.0020 to 0.0039 in.).
- Speed of deposit for a current density of 40A/dm2 is between 0.020
mm and 0.025 mm (0.0008 and 0.0010 in.) per hour.
- In the event of transient power failure, etch in the plating bath for 10
to 15 seconds prior to proceeding with deposit of chromium.
- Clean the anodes once daily either by pickling in a 30 % acetic acid or
50 % hydrochloric acid solution or by wire brushing outside the bath.
- During normal operation trivalent chrome forms slowly, especially in
small bores. The resistivity increases with the level of trivalent chrome
- 10 g/litre (2.530 gr/in 3) is not to be exceeded.
- This also applies to iron which should not exceed a concentration of 40
g/litre (10.12 gr/in 3). If this concentration is exceeded the result is a
dark coloring of the chromium plating.

NOTE : The anodes shall be of lead with 6 % of antimony. Anodes used

for chromium plating small diameter bores may, exceptionally, be
of iron. The ratio of anode to cathode shall be 1/3.
(e) Chromium touch-up
1 Refacing of deposit : clean with solvent and immerse part serving as anode in
bath for 15 to 20 seconds prior to proceeding with deposit of chromium at
ambient under 6 volts.
2 Removal of chromium plating : anodize at a current density of between 5 and 7
A/dm2 in a solution of caustic soda at 45 to 60 g/litre (11.385 to 15.18 gr/in
3).

NOTE : Refer to FIGURE 32-11-03-991-003-A for details of bath operation.

3 Rinse with cold, running class B water.
4 Dry with filtered hot air.
5 Bake at a temperature of 190 ±10˚C (374 ± 50˚F) for 3 hours.
(f) Cadmium plating
1 Sand blast then cadmium plate areas that have not been chromium plated.

2 Soak at a temperature of 200˚C (572˚F) for 3 hours.

3 Apply passivation solution, dichromate finish and cadium deposit.
4 Perform a magnetic particle or fluorescent penetrant inspection.
5 Perform a visual and dimensional check of the deposits (chromium, cadmium).
