1B Homework: Standard Form

Name: Period:

Directions: Write the following equations in standard form. Show all of your work.
! ! !
1. "
𝑥 − 2𝑦 = −7 2. "
𝑦 = 7+#𝑥
3𝑥 − 8𝑦 = −28 12𝑥 − 15𝑦 = −140

3. 6(𝑥 − 𝑦) = 3(𝑦 − 𝑥) 4. 0.2𝑥 = 1.6 − 0.5𝑦

𝑥−𝑦 =0 2𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 16

Directions: State the x- and y-intercepts for each equation. Graph each equation using the x- and
y-intercepts.

5. 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = −12 6. 𝑥 − 3𝑦 = −9

x-intercept: (−6,0) y-intercept: (0, −4) x-intercept: (−9,0) y-intercept: (0,3)

7. Jamesville High School has money to spend for the freshman school trip. The sponsors of the trip can
use $450 to purchase t-shirts and baseball caps to give to the freshman class. The t-shirts cost $5 and
baseball caps cost $9.

a. If 𝑥 represents the number of t-shirts and 𝑦 represents the number of baseball caps, write an equation
in standard form that shows the money they will spend to buy the t-shirts and baseball caps and the
money they have to spend for these items.
5x + 9y = 450

SDUHSD Math B Honors Module #3 – ANSWER KEY 5

b. If they buy 30 baseball caps, how many t-shirts will they be able to buy?
36 t-shirts

c. If they buy 27 t-shirts, how many baseball caps will they be able to buy?
35 baseball caps

d. Without graphing, describe in words what the graph of your equation would look like. State the slope,
x-intercept, and y-intercept.
#
The line would go down from left to right. It would have a slope of − $ , an x-intercept of 90 and a
y-intercept of 50.

8. Caden has $48,000 to invest in stocks and bonds. The unit cost per stock he wants to purchase is $10.
The unit cost per bond he wants to purchase is $12.

a. If 𝑥 represents the number of units of stocks he purchases and 𝑦 represents the number of units of
bonds he purchases, write an equation in standard form that shows the relationship of the cost for the
stocks and bonds and the money Caden has to invest.
10x +12y = 48,000 which simplifies to 5x +6y = 24,000

b. If he buys 150 units of stock, how many units of bonds does he purchase? How much money does he
invest in bonds?
y = 3,875, therefore he will purchase 3875 units of bonds and invest $46,500 in bonds.

c. If he buys 300 units of bonds, how many units of stocks does he purchase? How much money does
he invest in stocks?
x = 4440, therefore he will purchase 4,440 units of stock and invest $44,400 in stocks.

d. How many units of stock can he buy if he buys only stocks? State this value as an ordered pair.
(4800, 0)

e. How many units of bonds can he buy if he buys only bonds? State this value as an ordered pair.
(0,4000)

SDUHSD Math B Honors Module #3 – ANSWER KEY 6

f. Use your points found in parts d and e to graph
your equation on the coordinate plane.

g. Convert the equation you wrote in part 𝑎 to

slope-intercept form. State the 𝑚 and 𝑏 values.
5
𝑦 = − 𝑥 + 4000
6
5
𝑚=− 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏 = 4000
6

h. Does the equation you wrote in slope-intercept

form represent the same equation written in
standard form? Justify your reasoning using the
graph.
#
Yes. When graphed, the line has a slope of − and
%
y-intercept at the point (0, 4000).

9. Mr. Rooney is writing a quiz that has multiple choice questions and short answer questions. The entire
quiz is worth 40 points. He wants the multiple choice questions to be worth 2 points each and the short
answer questions to be worth 4 points each.

a. If 𝑥 represents the number of multiple choice questions and 𝑦 represent the number of short answer
questions, write an equation in standard form that describes all the different combinations of multiple
choice and short answer questions.
2𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 40

b. Graph your equation on the coordinate plane.

c. If Mr. Rooney decides to have only multiple

choice questions on his quiz, how many
questions can he have? How is this value shown
on the graph?
20 questions, this value is the x-intercept
at (20,0)

d. If Mr. Rooney decides to have only short answer

questions on his quiz, how many questions can
he have? How is this value shown on the graph?
10 questions, this value is the y-intercept
at (0,10)

SDUHSD Math B Honors Module #3 – ANSWER KEY 7

e. Is it realistic to have 9 multiple choice questions on the quiz, with the rest as short answer? Explain
why or why not.
&
It is not realistic for there to be 9 multiple choice questions because that would require 5 short answer
'
questions. A quiz will only have a whole number amount of questions.

f. Convert your equation from part a to slope-intercept form. State the 𝑚 and 𝑏 values.
1
𝑦 = − 𝑥 + 10
2
&
m = − ' and b = 10

g. Does the equation you wrote in slope-intercept form represent the same equation written in standard
from? Justify your reasoning using the graph.
&
Yes. When graphed, the line has a slope of − ' and a y-intercept at the point (0, 10).
