AGRI 111 Basics of Projects Management and Development
Project Justification
The Coconut palm, Cocos nucifera L ., is one of the top agricultural commodities in the Philippines. Coconut, together with
banana, pineapple and coffee, leads other locally produced crops in terms of export value. Coconut plantations cover more than 3
million hectares of land area in the country, which has been recognized as among the top producers of coconut in the world.
Infestations of an armored scale insects (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) on coconut trees had a devastating outbreaks. This
diaspidid, known locally as “ cocolisap ”, was previously recognized by local authorities as Aspidiotus destructor Signoret until a
more detailed study revealed its correct species identity as Aspidiotus rigidus Reyne. Cocolisap scale insect pests are a severe
infestation that could spread to perennial fruit trees. Damages to leaves, stalks and branches cause stunt growth. Damages to
fruits cause deformed and unmarketable. Coconut scale insects are usually present in all countries.
In addition, the coconut industry is significant in economic impact. Coconut provides various resources such as oil, milk,
water and fiber, contributing to food, cosmetics, industrial sectors and a source of income. Coconut cultivation supports livelihood
in many tropical regions, fostering economic stability and sustainable development.
Problem Statement
The Coconut Industry faces severe threats to their livelihoods from Cocolisap infestation. Therefore, declining income of
coconut farmers in the Municipality of Manay, Barangay Old Macopa, which was causing a widespread damage of coconut palms.
