Alaguisoc Elementary School: Then and Now

Alaguisoc Elementary School, a child-friendly institution, is one of

the seven complete elementary schools in the District of Jordan I, Schools
Division of Guimaras. It is 350 meters away from the national road and six
kilometres from Jordan Wharf. The school site is characterized with a flat,
yellowish-brown land of 10,000 sq. meters donated by the Piansay Family,
one of the landowners in the area, on April 22, 1948.
In 1936, the school began as a primary school catering to the needs of
the little children in the barangay. It is located near the residence of
Gamarcha family, approximately 300 meters from its present location. It
started with a classroom made of wooden posts and “pawid” for roofs
without walls. Later, woven strips of bamboo were added as walls. During
the war the school was closed. The school properties were kept inside the
house of Gamarcha Family.
The school reopened in 1948, now at its present site. It was still made
of light materials. However, a “buhawi” destroyed the improvised
classroom which prompted the teachers to hold classes at their homes.
Later, the school was rebuilt in its present site but was still made of light
materials and catered Grades 1 to 4 learners only.
In 1972, the first three-room Marcos-Type Building was constructed
and another building of the same type was erected in 1978. These
buildings were renovated through the Third Elementary Education
Program (TEEP) in 2001.
To cater to the needs of the growing school population, the Parent
Teacher Association (PTA) connected the two buildings by putting on
improvised roof over the space between the buildings and utilized them as
two more classrooms. This time the grades 4 to 6 learners need not go to
Jordan Central School anymore to complete their elementary education.
The school had its first graduation as a complete elementary school on
March 1978.
Today, Alaguisoc Elementary School has 12 classrooms, with a total of
294 pupils. It has 12 nationally-funded teachers and managed by a head
teacher, Mrs. Ma. Theresa L. Calastre.

c. After reading, learners will answer the following questions.

1. When did Alaguisoc Elementary School start its operation?
2. In what years did the school experienced changes and transitions?
3. When was the first graduation celebrated?
4. (Valuing) The barangay folks helped together to put up Alaguisoc
Elementary School. In your own way, how can you help the school?
Describe the people of Alaguisoc as to how they managed to continue
and value education despite the challenges which beset them through
the years.

2. Discussion
a. Have the learners read the following sentences.
1. The Piansay Family donated the school site on April 22, 1948.
2. In 1936, the school began as a primary school catering to the needs of
the little children in the barangay.
3. Today, Alaguisoc Elementary School has 12 classrooms, with a total
of 294 pupils.
Ask:
What are the underlined words/phrases called? (Adverb of Time)
What do they tell? (They tell when something happened.)
What do you call them? (Adverb of Time)

b. Teacher will further discuss the lesson.

Adverbs of time tell when something happened or will happen. They
express a point in time.

In the sentence “The Piansay Family donated the school site on April 22,
1948”, the phrase on April 22, 1948 tells when the Piansay Family
donated the school site. April 22, 1948 is an example of adverb of time. It
modifies the verb donated.

Adverbs of time are often used:

 to talk about the past: yesterday, the day before, ago, last
week/month/year
 to talk about the present: still, yet, while, when
 to talk about the future: soon, then, next week/month/year, in
two days, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow

Adverbs of time are usually placed at the end of the sentence.

Examples:
Dr. Carillo visited our school yesterday.
I saw Sally today.

However, there are also instances that adverbs of time are placed at
the beginning of the sentence.
Examples:
In 1936, the school began as a primary school catering
to the needs of the little children in the barangay.

Today, Alaguisoc Elementary School has 12

classrooms, with a total of 294 pupils.

If you need to use more than one Adverb of Time in a sentence, use
them in this order:
1. how long
2. how often
3. when
Examples:
I work (1) for five hours (2) every day
The periodical was published (2) weekly (3) last year.
I was overseas (1) for two months (3) last year.
She worked in a hospital (1) for two days (2) every
week (3) last year.
