Completing the AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF)

Important Information for International Students:

1. Undergraduate admission to American University is need aware for all international students. This means
that AU considers the student’s ability to cover all costs when making admissions’ decisions.
2. AU does not provide need-based financial aid, need-based grants, or federal financial aid to international
students. Need-based aid is only available for U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.
3. All international students who will need an F-1 student visa/J-1 exchange visa must complete and submit the attached
2-page AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF) as part of the application process and by the appropriate deadline.

4. The AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF) must reflect a minimum of US$81,620 for your first year at AU.
Be prepared to pay at least this amount for each additional year at AU.
5. Applications missing the completed AU DFF signed by both the applicant and
the parent/sponsor will not be considered for admission.
6. AU does not accept the CSS Profile, FAFSA form, or the College Board ISFAA forms for international students.
7. Merit scholarships ranging from US$8,000/year to US$25,000/year are available for
qualified international students but are highly competitive, limited, and partial.
8. If admitted to AU and if you select to attend AU after submitting your deposit, financial documents for the
I-20 form (a bank letter and the AU CFIS form), each confirming a minimum of US$81,620, will be collected
by an undergraduate admissions officer and reviewed by the AU ISSS (International Student and Scholar
Services) Office. The ISSS Office will then deliver the I-20 form or contact you for more information.
9. You do not need to submit a bank letter or the AU CFIS form confirming a minimum of US$81,620 at the time of application,
but it is optional. (Exception: Students applying for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) must
submit the Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF) and a bank letter, each confirming a minimum of US$4,000, by the
scholarship deadline of December 1st, 2024. See instructions at www.american.edu/admissions/international/egls.cfm.

How to Complete the AU Declaration of Finances Form:

1. Be sure to complete both pages 1 and 2.
2. Student’s signature and date must appear on page 2 in the section entitled Applicant’s Certification.
3. The amount listed under “Sources of Funds” on page 2 must total a minimum of US$81,620.
4. Add a signature & date next to section on page 2 entitled Required: Official Certification
By Family or Individual Sponsor depending on who is providing funding.
5. If multiple sources of funds are listed (for example family + individual sponsor), the total
amount on the chart on page 2 should show the US$81,620 minimum.
6. Students receiving or applying for an outside scholarship from a government, parent’s employer,
or other organization may be contacted by an admissions officer for more information
regarding the scholarship application timeline and scholarship disbursement date.
