CE371 – Sustainable Civil and Environmental Engineering Systems

Spring 2024

Homework #4
Due Friday March 15 at 12:30PM on D2L
Possible points: 45
Directions:
• Complete your HW assignment electronically and submit on D2L as a single PDF.
• Your homework will be graded 90% based on your responses and 10% for neatness.
Neatness includes formatting your responses, complete sentences, clear graphs/figures (no
blurriness), labeling all graphs and figures in your responses, and citations as appropriate.

1. Life cycle impact calculation (15 pts)

a) Calculate the global warming potential and resource depletion using mass and
economic allocation (Fill the table). You should show your calculations to have partial credits
if you don’t get the right answer). (14 pts)

TOTAL 118 118 45 45

a) GWP mass process XYZ = 2*25 + 2*4 = 58
GWP mass A = 3/10 * 58+ 2*25 = 67.4
GWP mass B = 7/10 *58 + 10 = 50.6
GWP total mass = 58+2*25+10 = 118
GWP economic A = 58 *(3*10)/ (3*10+7*5) + 50 =76.8
GWP economic B = 58* (7*5)/ (3*10+7*5) +10 = 41.2
ADP mass process XYZ = 15*0.00194 = 0.0291
ADP mass A = 0.0291 * 3/10 + 0.5*89.5 =44.76
ADP mass B = 0.0291 *7/10 +(0.1*1.8+20*0.00194) = 0.239
ADP economic A = 0.0291 *3*10/((3*10+7*5) +0.5*89.5 = 44.76
ADP economic B = 0.0291*7*5/((3*10+7*5) +(0.1*1.8+20*0.00194) = 0.239
b) What is the carbon footprint of 1 kg of product B based on economic allocation? (1pts)
41.2/7 = 5.89

2. AFLEET – 30 pts

Introduction to AFLEET Online software

Fuel Price: https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/prices.html

The goal is to compare the economic and environmental life cycle impact of SUV (modeled
using the passenger car model). You plan to compare different SUV options before making a
purchase decision.

a) Fill the following table with your assumptions (that will be used in AFLEET). Fuel economy
should be found from the link above, and the purchase price from dealer/online search –
looking for a rough number, not exact. (10 pts)

c) Assume an average mileage of 10,000 miles/yr in Michigan. Change the electricity mix to
the current electricity mix in Michigan (using https://www.epa.gov/egrid/data-explorer ).
Calculate the results and save a screenshot (or copy the results using the save/export
results). (10 pts)
d) Which one do you think is the best option when considering both economic and
environmental results? (5 pts)
Considering the balance of price and environment, the Tesla model Y should be the best
choice.
