Foreword

Dear reader,

Congratulations and welcome to IIT Bombay! Your untiring efforts and dedication have brought
you here, and the coming years are going to be a real roller coaster ride. Even the longest
journeys, however, begin with a single step. Which is why we have the Student Mentor Program,
to make sure you have a mentor who walks with you as you venture out of home, into the world,
to write your own story.

From important information that will be helpful through the first year and the different people
you should contact in case of difficulties, to pointers from seniors who’ve been through the
things that you’ll experience- this has everything, so keep it handy and refer to it when the need
arises. For the stuff that this handbook does not cover, always feel free to reach out to your
mentor.

Here’s hoping that IIT Bombay is everything you came for, that you make the most of your time
here, that ‘insti’ gives you lessons, friends and memories for a lifetime.

Cheers,

Institute Student Mentor Programme (ISMP)

The Institute Student Mentor Program (ISMP) was established in 2004-05 with the primary
objective of enabling constructive and positive interaction, guidance and mentorship of freshers
by their seniors. Each of you will be assigned a mentor, who will be a student in his/her third,
fourth or fifth year who has volunteered to be a part of the mentorship program. They have
experienced what it is to be a fresher and are well-suited to understand and address
most problems that you might come across during your stay here. The mentor-mentee bond is a
special one. Think of your mentor as a friend figure, someone you can approach with any kind of
problem & discuss absolutely anything under the sun. Consider your mentor to be your buddy &
talk to him/her without any inhibitions. However, be reminded that the mentor will only be able
to know about a problem or an issue as much as you tell them. So it is your responsibility to
make sure that they are well-informed for them to be able to help you.
Feel free to call us any time of the day or night.

Counsellor's Message

Welcome to IITB!

We all know you have put in a lot of hard work to enter the most premier engineering institute in
the country. We should say that you have done a great job. You will now be in a new
environment, with new people around you, with more challenges than before and a more
AMBITIOUS YOU! Suddenly you would feel that a lot of parameters around you have changed
and you would have more responsibility to handle. Take heart, you will not be the only one.
These are common issues that almost everyone in the institute faces.

There can be testing times when you might have to face peer pressure, performance pressure,
social pressure, family pressure/issues leading to feelings of loneliness, low confidence, anxiety,
stress, anger, sadness and so on…

It is important to understand that it is quite common for students to lose their focus and give in
to these pressures or issues. If not attended at the right time, it could lead to poor performance -

both academically and personally.

To help you refrain from losing your focus, at IITB we have Student Counselors along with the
ISMP and SCP, to guide you. Students are encouraged to approach the Counselor for any
problem that they are

facing, may it be academic, emotional, social or financial, without hesitation. The Counseling Cell
is there to provide a range of psychological and counseling services to meet the mental health
and developmental needs of IITB students.

Counseling provides an opportunity for individuals to learn to make better choices, improve
interpersonal skills, develop increased confidence and to increase educational effectiveness. In a
one-on-one meeting with a counselor, students are helped to explore and express feelings,
examine beliefs and ways of thinking about their present situation, reflect on patterns of
behavior, and work toward making healthy changes.

Typical concerns of students who seek counseling are:

● Transition and change

● Uncertainty about values & goals
● Relationship issues with peers and
special ones
● Lack of motivation or concentration
difficulties

smp.gymkhana.iitb.ac.in iitb.ac.in 7
● Issues of grief and loss
● Stress, depression & anxiety
● Family pressure

Efforts to stay away from undesirable temptations Students should look at the Counselor’s office
as an open, receptive, secure and confidential forum to share all sorts of difficulties. The service

is free and students benefit from the Counseling

Service over a wide range of concerns.

Here at IITB, you are provided with any kind of help that you may need at all times. All you need
to do is ask for it. Approach any senior, friend, mentor, student leader, professor or counselor.
They will definitely help and guide you. All the Best & Keep doing well!

Message from the General Secretary, Academic Affairs - UG

Congratulations, and give yourself a round of applause, for you are the new waves in this vast
ocean of possibilities, which is like a window to a whole new world. On behalf of the
Undergraduate Academic Council (UGAC), I welcome you all to discover your future here at IIT
Bombay.

As an academic institution, IIT Bombay can and will teach you a lot of things during your stay
here. The important thing is to keep your mind open and keep learning. It's truly a warehouse of
opportunities where you can excel at one thing or the other. Having said this, do not forget the
primary reason why you're here – your academics. Try your best to maintain a balance between
your academics and the plethora of extra-curricular activities here. For you to pursue your
interests with complete freedom, the academic front is the one you need to be sound at.

Lastly, your time is limited. You can fail even at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a
chance on doing what you love/desire. Do your job & be humble. Summarising in a quote: “Live
as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

The Faculty Advisor

Your friend, philosopher & guide

Faculty Advisors (Fac-Ad), as the name suggests, are professors from your respective
departments who will help you out in making various decisions, primarily related to academics
and even otherwise. Fac-Ads keep track of your academic progress and will guide you properly.
Each semester - changes in your registration, such as dropping of courses, withdrawal from a
semester on medical advice, etc., can be effected only with the consent of the Fac-Ad.

The Fac-Ad might play a limited role in the first year. But as you grow older in the IIT system, you
might have to make some tough decisions regarding coursework and programs to choose a
career path suitable to your interests. Amidst the plethora of opportunities offered here at IIT
Bombay, your Fac-Ad can provide you with the proper guidance and help you choose the right
path. If you intend to change your branch/specialisation after the 1st year, your Fac-Ad is the right
person to approach. Fac-Ad is an essential link between you and your department. Do not
hesitate to talk to them regarding any academic issues. You can ask or directly approach your
faculty advisors—[check ASC for further details]. You can also ask your mentors to introduce you
to them!

Message From GSHA

First and foremost, on behalf of the Hostel Affairs Council (HA), I would like to congratulate you
and welcome you all to IIT Bombay to explore your destiny. I'm sure you're quite enthusiastic to
learn about a new way of life and culture, and you should be. You must have a lot of questions

smp.gymkhana.iitb.ac.in iitb.ac.in 29
racing through your mind. What is the atmosphere like here? How are things going for you? Is it
possible for me to mix? Will I be able to find exactly what I'm looking for? For all of this, I only
have one word of advice: Relax. Even when I first started, I had these concerns, but to be honest,
I received positive responses to all of them, and I am confident that you will as well. So, welcome
again to our small but lovely family, which is full of love, joy, learning, and success.

Life at IIT Bombay has a range of flavors, providing students with a unique opportunity to study
and grow. Bombay! The city itself has a variety of intriguing genres to look forward to, such as its
rich culture, long history, vibrant social life, excellent weather, particularly during the monsoon
season, and overcrowded transportation systems.

You'll quickly realise that attending IIT Bombay was a huge step forward in both your personal
and professional development. IIT Bombay aims to equip students with the tools they need to
succeed independently. I strongly encourage you to meet everyone and form pleasant
relationships with everyone. Also, be enthusiastic and involved in any future events. Try to be
extraordinary in every setting if you want to stand out and shine.

We all have great expectations for everyone, and we are confident that you will overcome any
obstacles to meet those expectations. You can achieve everything you want with effort and
perseverance, and at the end of this trip, you will have a treasure trove of memories.

Hostel life at IIT Bombay is an important component of your experience here. Although it may be
difficult for some of you to adjust at first, you will quickly fall in love with your new home. Since
the hostels are located on campus, you will spend most of your time here, with the exception of
occasional forays in search of good food or treats. As a result, the campus is well equipped to
meet all of your needs, whether they are everyday necessities or health concerns. We also have a
handful of guesthouses that you can use (probably) if you have visitors coming to town.

We, the Hostel Affairs Council, have done our best to provide necessary facilities to all students,
making us one of the most important student groups and, at times, vital. When compared to the
luxuries of your home, you may feel disheartened in the midst of a tightly packed curriculum and
eating food in a congested mess in the early days of your stay on campus, but believe me, you
will quickly fall in love with the hostel life here at IIT Bombay. I sincerely hope that the future
years prove to be more fruitful for you than you could have imagined. Have a pleasant visit and
carry with you lifelong memories to treasure.

The pandemic has afflicted us all, and due to the risks to our health, most of you will be unable
to return to our lush campus at this time. But don't let that dampen your enthusiasm because a
new chapter in your life has begun, and we'll make every effort to keep you updated and get you
back to campus as soon as possible. Our team is working extremely hard to make this happen.

Message from GS Sports

Hello everyone!

Welcome to one of the most (if not THE most :p) prestigious institutions in the country! In the
next few years of your life, you wouldn’t just be working on getting a degree, but would also
embark upon a journey of self-discovery. With a host of activities available at your disposal, in
academics as well as extracurriculars, you will discover that IIT Bombay stands for much more
than you expected while filling out your preferences in JoSAA.

smp.gymkhana.iitb.ac.in iitb.ac.in 82
An important element of your life at IIT Bombay is about maintaining a balance between
academics and extracurriculars, and this is what will shape you for your future. I would take this
opportunity to introduce you to what is a very important aspect of the latter; Sports. As an
enthusiastic freshman, I still fondly remember joining in with the football team and that moment
called out to me and I could see the sport and its people being an integral part of the next 4
years of my life in insti. This is what sports stand for at IIT Bombay; learning, teamwork,
leadership and opportunities. This sounds a little cheesy but once you’re a part of it, you can
experience this and feel the growth in yourself, both as a sportsperson and as an individual by
the end of your stay in the Institute.

Coming to the sports, you get an opportunity to excel at more than 14 sports, both Individual
and Team, through numerous events that are organised in the Gymkhana which encapsulate
every aspect of sports; competition (through various tournaments like General Championships
and Institute Leagues and Opens), spectatorship (through various international event screenings)
and learning (NSO, Sports Mentorship Programs, Beginner camps and Workshops etc). The list
never ends! It also gives me utmost pride to share that the Gymkhana is one of the Institute’s
most prized assets, with world-class sporting facilities giving a budding sportsperson exposure to
international match standards, which are one of the best in the country!

My favourite part of the whole journey was the opportunity to learn and grow that I got at every
step. It starts with NSO and beginner workshops, with numerous opportunities along the way to
represent your hostel in the General Championships and your institute at the Inter IIT, which
makes every single day of your hard work in the build-up worth the struggle. Some students live
and breathe for the Inter IIT; the pride of representing your Institute is unimaginable!

Until. Victory. Always. IIT Bombay Sports lives by this and always strives to provide the best
possible sporting atmosphere for every resident in the institute. Having said this, the Institute
Sports Council can’t wait to take you all on your journey through the Gymkhana, with a plethora
of activities at your disposal!
