General information
EM80 / EM300 Actuator

This Customer Information is intended to provide advice PrimeServ Customer Information


concerning the Woodward EM 300 speed control system No. 336 / November 2014
and the actuator attached to the engine. The actuator is
basically an electrical powered motor, equipped with
gearbox and roller bearing on the drive output as well as a
roller bearing on the drive end side. Concerns

Due to the fact that the diesel engine in operation is
subjected to heat and vibrations, these conditions also Filing Advice
affect the attached actuator. Therefore the running Assembly group / work card 140
behavior of the roller bearings might be disturbed.

During maintenance works of the engines the EM 300


actuator often remains uninspected. This may cause a
slow-growing, undetected damage to the mentioned roller
bearings and also lead to an engine operation or speed
control failure.

In case such a failure occurs, the mechanical damage


could also affect the EM 300 driver unit which is forced to
reach the torque limit and will therefore fail as well. That in
turn will lead to an unexpected stop of engine operation,
including the loss of power production caused by a
necessary replacement of actuator and driver unit.

Measures

In order to avoid the unexpected stop of engine operation we suggest the possibility to maintain, respectively to
replace the roller bearings of the actuator to prevent possible damages on the engine. Please consider that we
can offer an reconditioned EM 300 actuator to deliver on an exchange basis.

The time required to replace the actuator only takes between one and two hours. The reconditioned actuator
will also be equipped with a new modified rear bearing shield to reinforce reliability and service live.

According to our experience we recommend a replacement after approximately 12.000 running hours or
somewhat earlier, depending on the operating conditions at site. The most convenient opportunity would be an
installation during a scheduled engine maintenance within the 10.000 - 12.000 running hours interval.

A maintenance interval for the EM 300 based on the major overhaul interval of the diesel engine is essential for
a steady and save engine operation. The adjusted EM driver unit can only regulate / control the requested
engine speed if the actuator is mechanical in proper condition. The replacement and adjustment of the EM 300
can also be supported online via our personnel.
