Climate of Bihar
Physical/natural division of Bihar:-
❖ Mountain range or lowland area:- This includes the area of Someshwar Range,
Harha Valley and Ramnagar Doon.
❖ Plains:- It includes the northern plains of the Ganges and the southern plains of the
Ganges.
❖ Southern Plateau :- Dharwad and Vindhya region comes under this.
Plains:-
❖ 96% of the total land area of Bihar is plain. This plain has been formed by the
deposits of Ganga and its tributaries. River Ganga flows in the middle of this plain.
❖ Its area is 90,650 square kilometers.
❖ The slope of the Ganga plains is slow and uniform and is 6 centimeters per
kilometer.
❖ Its average height above sea level is 60 - 120 meters.
❖ Based on the location of the Ganga River, it is divided into two subclasses.
Northern plain of Ganga :-
❖ It extends from the Ganges River in the north to the Nepal border. The slope of this
plain is from north to south and from north-west to south-east. This plain is
divided into three doabs.
❖ This plain has been formed by the deposition of sediments of Ganga and its
tributaries like Gandak, Kosi, Ghagra, etc.
❖ This is 62.86% of the total plain area and its area is 56,982 square kilometers.
❖ Doab means the land or plain between two rivers. All these Doab areas are famous
for their alluvial soil and fertility.
➢ Ghaghra - Gandak Doab
➢ Gandak - Kosi Doab
➢ Kosi - Mahananda Doab
The northern plain is divided into five parts: -
1. Bhabar Pradesh :- Bhabar region mountainsThere is a land area located in the
foothills of Ya which extends across India and Nepal. This region is situated between
the Shivalik high and Terai region. In the Bhabar region, rivers flow on high and low
slopes and deposit sand, stones and soil. Due to big stones, rivers do not flow and
flow from below.

2. Terai Region :- The Terai region is a landmass located in the foothills of the
Himalayas that extends across India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. This area is
located in the south of the Bhabar region. In the Terai region, rivers flow slowly and
deposit soil. Rivers become visible again in this area.
3. Bangar Region :- The area is composed of ancient alluvial deposits that were
deposited by rivers over millions of years. The soil in Bangar region is sandy and
loamy, with low fertility. Predominantly in dry areas, Bhangar features salty and
rough small paths known as 'Reh', 'Kallar' or 'Bhoor'.
4. Khadar Region :- The area is composed of the latest alluvial deposits that are
deposited by the rivers during floods every year. Due to the newness of the soil, the
fertility of the land continuously increases. The specialty of the Khadar area is that
the soil here is always rich in nutrients. The soil washed away by the floods of the
rivers makes this land completely fertile.
5. Chaur or Man region
Other important facts of Bihar
❖ Chaur or Man region :- This is a submerged lowland area. This is basically the
Gokhur Lake region. These are formed due to the diversion of rivers. Due to low
land, there is more accumulation of water.
➢ Major Chaur Pradesh :- Lekhani Chaur (West Champaran), Sundarpur Chaur
and Bahadurpur Chaur (East Champaran).
➢ Major Man region :- Tetaria Man, Madhopur Man, Motijheel Man (East
Champaran) and Pipra Man. Saraiya Man, Simri Man (West Champaran)
❖ Diara region:- The specially shaped area forming the plain flood plain of Ganga is
called 'Diara Pradesh'.
❖ Many Man/Chaur are found in the form of ‘Oxbow lakes’ in the northern Ganga
plain.
❖ The northern Ganga plain is famous for the horrors of floods.
Southern plain of Ganga :-
❖ The South Ganga Plain is located between the Ganga River to the south and the
plateau hilly area to the south. Its size is smaller in comparison to the North Ganga
plain.
❖ It has been formed from the deposits of plateau rivers other than Ganga.

total state area.
