chronological:

She died in 1960, penniless, with all her books out of print. However, her book was reprinted in 1978.
In the above example, the events are arranged in chronological order. The years signify the time order
from the oldest event to the newest event.

cause and effect:


The surface of the Earth is divided into pieces called “tectonic plates.” These plates move. When the
plates rub against each other, they do not move smoothly. When the plates do not move smoothly,
earthquakes result. Some parts of the world get more earthquakes than other parts. The parts of the
earth that get most earthquakes are near the edges of these plates.

the cause of the earthquakes is when the tectonic plates doesn't move smoothly, and the effect or
result of the plates not moving smoothly is of course earthquakes.

compare and contrast:


Speaking and writing are two major communication skills that have some similarities and differences.
First, both of them are productive skills, which means they are both acts of producing messages.
Secondly, both speaking and writing give you the voice of authority. Both the speaker and the writer are
entitled to communicate their messages. While they share some common features, speaking and writing
differ in some aspects. Speaking is an immediate way of interaction. In addition, speakers might correct
themselves or even change their opinions. In contrast, what’s in print stays in print. While words fly
away, a written text continues to give its message across time and space.

Problem and Solution:


The local school board has an issue because they cannot find enough substitute teachers to cover
teacher absences. One possible remedy would be to significantly raise the pay SO that substitutes from
other districts would change where they Work.
