GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based of 1 mark each,
Secion B contains five questions of two marks each, Section C contains seven questions of three marks
each, Section D contains two case study-based questions of four marks each and section E contains three
long answer questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in section
B, one question in section C, one question in each CBQ in section D and all three questions in section E.
You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(6) Use of calculators is not allowed.
(7) You may use the following values of physical constants where ever necessary:

20 Draw a graph showing the variation of stopping potential with frequency of the incident 2
radiations. What does the slope of the line with the frequency axis indicate?
21 In a semiconductor, the number density of intrinsic charge carriers at 270 C is 1.5×1016 m−3. If the 2
semiconductor is doped with impurity atom, the hole density increases to 4.5×1022 m−3. What is
the electron density in the doped semiconductor?

22 Explain the term drift velocity of electrons in a conductor. Hence obtain the expression for the 3
current through a conductor in terms of drift velocity.

respectively are connected in parallel as shown in the

25 An a.c. a source generating a voltage ε = ε0 sin ωt is connected to a capacitor of capacitance C. Find3
the expression for the current I flowing through it. Plot a graph of ε and I versus ωt to show that the
current is ahead of the voltage by π/2.

An ac voltage V = V0 sin ωt is applied across a pure inductor of inductance L. Find an expression
for the current I, flowing in the circuit and show mathematically that the current flowing
through it lags behind the applied voltage by a phase angle of π/2. Also draw graphs of V and
I versus ωt for the circuit.

27 A plane wavefront propagating in a medium of refractive index μ1 3
is incident on a plane
surface making the angle of incidence i as shown in the figure. It
enters into a medium of refractive index μ2 (μ2 > μ1). Use
Huygens’ construction of secondary wavelets to trace the
propagation of the refracted wavefront. Hence verify Snell’s law
of refraction.
28 Explain, with the help of circuit diagrams, the modifications of working of p-n junction diodes as 3
a full- wave rectifier over a half-wave rectifier.

29 HELICAL MOTION OF A CHARGED PARTICLE IN A MAGNETIC FIELD : 4
If velocity has a component along B, this
component remains unchanged as the motion
along the magnetic field will not be affected by
the magnetic field. The motion in a plane
perpendicular to the magnetic field is a circular
one, thereby producing a helical motion.

I. Three charges –q, Q and –q are placed at equal distances on a
straight line. If the potential energy of the system of these
charges is zero, then what is the ratio Q:q?
II. Obtain the expression for the electric field intensity due to a uniformly charged spherical
shell of radius R at a point distant r from the centre of the shell outside it.
III. Draw a graph showing the variation of electric field intensity E with r, for r > R and r < R.

32 (a) In Young’s double slit experiment, describe briefly how bright and dark fringes are 5
obtained on the screen kept in front of a double slit. Hence obtain the expression for the fringe
width.
(b) The ratio of the intensities at minima to the maxima in the Young’s double slit experiment is
9 : 25. Find the ratio of the widths of the two slits.
OR
(a) Draw a ray diagram to show the working of a compound microscope. Deduce an expression
for the total magnification when the final image is formed at the near point.
(b) In a compound microscope, an object is placed at a distance of 1.5 cm from the objective of
focal length 1.25 cm. If the eyepiece has a focal length of 5 cm and the final image is formed
at the near point, estimate the magnifying power of the microscope

33 (a) What characteristic property of nuclear force explains the constancy of binding energy per 5

nucleon (B.E/A) in the range of mass number ‘A’ lying 30 <A< 170
(b) Calculate the energy release in MeV in the deuterium-tritium fusion reaction

using the data mass of 1H2= 2.014102 u, mass of 1H3 = 3.016949 u,


mass of 2He4 = 4.002603 u , mass of neutron = 1.008665 u, u = 931.5 MeV
OR
(a) Show that the radius of the orbit in a hydrogen atom varies as n2, where n is the principal
quantum number of the atom.
(b) In a hydrogen atom, an electron undergoes transition from 3rd excited state to the first
excited state and then to the ground state. Find out the ratio of the wavelengths of the
emitted radiations in the two cases
