SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MUSIC

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Topic: Introduction of Musical Instruments

Objective:
- Students will be able to identify and classify different types of musical
instruments.
- Students will understand the classification of musical instruments into four
main families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of how each instrument produces
sound.

Materials:
- Pictures or of various musical instruments
- Powerpoint
- Audio or video clips of different instruments playing

Procedure:
1. Introduction:
- Start the lesson by asking students what they know about musical
instruments. Encourage them to share their experiences with any
instruments they have seen or played.
- Explain that today's lesson will focus on learning about different types of
musical instruments and how they produce sound.

2. Warm-up Activity:
- Show pictures of various musical instruments to the students.
- Ask students to categorize the instruments into groups based on what
they have in common. Guide them to classify the instruments into four main
families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
- Discuss each family briefly, mentioning examples of instruments in each
category.

3. Main Activity:
- Introduce each family of instruments one by one.
- Strings: Explain that string instruments produce sound when their
strings are plucked, strummed, or bowed. Show examples such as the violin,
guitar, and cello. Play a short audio or video clip demonstrating the sound of
each instrument.
- Woodwinds: Explain that woodwind instruments produce sound when air
is blown through them. Show examples such as the flute, clarinet, and
saxophone. Play audio or video clips of each instrument being played.
- Brass: Explain that brass instruments produce sound when the player
buzzes their lips into a mouthpiece. Show examples such as the trumpet,
trombone, and tuba. Play audio or video clips of each instrument being
played.
- Percussion: Explain that percussion instruments produce sound when
they are struck, shaken, or rubbed. Show examples such as the drum,
tambourine, and xylophone. Play audio or video clips of each instrument
being played.
- Encourage students to ask questions and discuss the characteristics of
each instrument family.

4. Group Activity:
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Provide each group with a set of pictures or flashcards of various
instruments.
- Ask the groups to classify the instruments into the four families discussed
earlier.
- Circulate around the room to provide assistance and answer questions.

5. Conclusion:
- Bring the class back together and review the main points of the lesson.
- Ask students to share something new they learned about musical
instruments.
- Conclude by emphasizing the importance of understanding the different
families of instruments in music.
