CHAPTER 3

 Diameter of Pipe from Boiler to HPT (State 1)

Based on the flow rate of 375 T/hr, we refer to standard pipe sizing tables typically provided by

organizations such as ASME or the American Institute of Chemistry.

- Pipe Material: Carbon steel (as per ASME B 16.9 A106).

- Schedule: Schedule 40 is often used for steam applications.

- For a standard Schedule 40 pipe, the internal diameters for common sizes are:

80 mm (3.15 inches) – 0.0063 m

100 mm (4 inches) – 0.0081 m

 Calculate Required Pipe Diameter

Given that the recommended steam velocity for steam lines is between 15 to 40 m/s to avoid

excessive wear and tear on the pipes, we need to calculate the internal diameter (D) necessary to

accommodate the steam flow while limiting the pressure drop.

The formula for calculating the flow rate 𝑄 through a pipe based on the internal diameter is

given as follows:

𝑄= A𝑣

Where:

A=
π 2
( D ) is the cross-sectional area of the pipe.
4

𝑣 = is the velocity of the steam (in m/s).

 Density Calculation

Typically, the density of steam at 128 Bar can be approximated. For superheated steam around

that pressure, the density is approximately 5-6 kg/m³. For our calculations, we can take an

average of 5.0 kg/m³.

Now, converting the steam flow rate:

375,000
375,000 kg/hr = =104.17 kg /s

kg
Flow Rate = 104.17 kg /s ( ¿( 3
¿ = 20.83m3 /s
kg 5.0 m
- If we choose a median velocity of around 25 m/s for the steam flow, rearranging the

equation gives:

D= √
4Q
πv

Plug this back to determine the required diameter:

Putting in the values,

D=
√ 4(20.83) = 0.515m
