Lesson Plan: Introduction to Basic

Algebra
Objective:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to understand the basic concepts of
algebra, including variables, expressions, and solving simple equations.

Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Algebra worksheets
- Calculators (optional)

Duration:
60 minutes

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)


Begin with a quick review of arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division). Ask students if they are familiar with variables (letters in math problems).

2. Introduction to Variables (15 minutes)


Define a variable as a symbol (usually a letter) that represents a number.
Show examples:
- x + 5 = 10 (Here, x is a variable)
- Ask students to solve for x.

3. Writing Algebraic Expressions (15 minutes)


Explain how everyday language can be translated into algebraic expressions.
Example: '5 more than a number' becomes x + 5.
Provide practice problems where students translate word problems into algebraic
expressions.

4. Solving Simple Equations (15 minutes)


Demonstrate how to solve simple linear equations like:
-x+3=8
- 2x = 10
Step-by-step explanation on isolating the variable.
Allow students to solve similar problems on the board or worksheet.

5. Summary & Review (5 minutes)


Recap key points:
- What are variables?
- How do we write and solve simple algebraic expressions?
Answer any remaining questions.

Homework:
Assign practice problems from the textbook or a worksheet involving solving basic
algebraic equations.
