Real World Quadratics Project (A)

Part 1A: Exploration: You will find 5 examples of quadratics in your everyday life.

Using a device, you will take 5 pictures of quadratics in the real world. You must be in the picture.

Include your pictures here:

Part 1B: Exploration:

1. Choose one of your pictures.

2. Upload your picture to the Desmos Graphing Calculator by
opening a new graph, then clicking on the plus sign. Select
image and upload your saved image into the graph.
3. Position your picture in quadrant I, and make sure your
graph goes through both the x and y axes.
4. Use the equation editor to create a quadratic equation that best fits your quadratic picture.
5. Press the save button to save your graph on Desmos.
6. Take a screenshot of the graph you created and paste it here.

Your Graph: Example:

7. Use your graph to identify the following features:

Vertex: 3.5
1.438, 0
Zero(s): 5.562, 0

-0,8
Y-intercept:
3.5, 4.25
Equation of the Line:

Part 2: Application:

2
In standard form, a quadratic equation is 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 . Use the equation you developed in part 2 to
answer the following questions.

1. In your equation, change your 𝑎 value to the value of 2. Explain what happened to your
parabola.

It flipped upside down and moved to the left.

2. In your equation, change your 𝑏 value to the value of 2. Explain what happened to your
parabola.

It moved up

3. In your equation, change your 𝑐 value to the value of 2. Explain what happened to your
parabola.

It moved up even more

Name __________________________________________________ Period ________________
4. In general, how does changing the values in your equation affect the size and placement of
any given parabola?

It can change it by flipping it, moving it from side to side and can do almost anything.

Grading Rubric:

1 points Includes five pictures that are all

parabolas in real life. You are
represented in each picture.

2 points Correctly uploaded one picture to

desmos and found a quadratic equation
to create a line of best fit.

2 points Correctly identified the vertex, zeros,

y-intercept, line of symmetry, and
equation of the line.
