HOMOEOPATHIC
MATERIA MEDICA
SUBJECT CODE: BH 402
NAME OF COURSE: HOMOEOPATHIC MATERIA MEDICA
YEAR/SEMESTER: IVth BHMS
INTRODUCTION:
• Homoeopathic Materia Medica is differently constructed as compared
to other Materia Medica.
• The Homoeopathic Materia Medica consists of a schematic
arrangement of symptoms produced by each drug, incorporating no
theories or explanations about their interpretation or inter-relationship.
Each drug should be studied synthetically, analytically and
comparatively, and this alone would enable a Homeopathic student to
study each drug individually and as a whole and help him to be a good
prescriber.
• Essential and complete knowledge of the drug action as a whole can
be ascertained only by qualitative drug proving on healthy persons and
this alone can make it possible to elicit all the symptoms of a drug with
reference to the whole of a person; and it is just such as a person as a
whole to whom the knowledge of drug action is to be applied.
• It is essential that at the end of this course, each student should gain
basic and sufficient knowledge of how to study Homoeopathic Materia
Medica and to achieve this objective basic and general topic of Materia
Medica should be taught in detail during this curriculum, general
topics should be taught in all the classes.
The homoeopathic medicine are to be taught under the following headings,
namely: -
• Common name, family, habitat, parts used, preparation, constituents
(of source material)
• Proving data
• Sphere of action
• Symptomatology of the medicine emphasizing the characteristic
symptoms (mental, physical generals and particulars including
sensations, modalities and concomitants) and constitution.
• Comparative study of medicines.
• Therapeutic application (Applied Materia Medical)
35
GOAL
We are committed to empowering students with the knowledge of
Homoeopathic Materia Medica and helping them in acquiring the skillsto
become a good Homoeopathic physician.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
• Comprehensive training in the theory and practice of Homoeopathic
Materia Medica both clinical and therapeutic and research in related
fields.
• To simplify the understanding of drugs and develop students analytical
abilities through the study of comparative materia medica.
• Knowledge and skills related to pathophysiology of homoeopathic
drugs in order to apply it in day-to-day homoeopathic practice.
• Developing proficiency in students for use of homoeopathic remedies
in patient care.
KNOWLEDGE: At the end of the course………
Year Knowledge
IVBHMS The IV BHMS (2015) syllabus should emphasize on clinical
application of homoeopathic materia medica with reference
to I BHMS - IV BHMS Syllabus including general materia
medica and study of drugs.

REPERTORY
COURSE CODE: BH 404
NAME OF THE COURSE: REPERTORY
YEAR: IVth BHMS
INTRODUCTION
• The repertory is an index and catalogue of the symptoms of the Materia
Medica, nearly arranged in a practical form and also indicating the
relative gradation of drugs, and it greatly facilitates quick selection of
indicated remedy. It is impossible to practice Homoeopathy without
the aid of repertories. Repertorisation is not the end but means to arrive
to the similimum together with Materia Medica based on sound
principles of Philosophy. Homoeopathic Materia Medica is an
encyclopedia of Symptoms. No mind can memorize all the symptoms
or all the drugs with their characteristic gradation.
• Each repertory has been compiled on distinct philosophical base,
which determines its structure. In order to exploit full advantage of
each repertory it is important to grasp thoroughly its conceptual base
and construction. This will help student to learn scope, limitations and
adaptability of the repertory.
GOAL
The goal of teaching repertory is that a learner must utilize repertory as a
tool in a scientific manner to arrive at a similimum
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of course on Repertory, the learner will be able to –
Cognitive Domain
• Explain the merits of repertory-based prescription
• Recall the milestones in the development of repertory
• Explain the need for repertory as a tool for prescription
• Describe the various dimensions of case taking
• Classify the symptoms as being general or particular
• Analyse the symptoms as being common or uncommon
• Finalise the totality of symptoms
• Correlate the case with appropriate school of philosophy
• Select the eliminating symptom
• Identify the medium, method, process and technique of
repertorisation
• Classify repertories on the basis of group characteristics
• Select the appropriate repertory for the case
65
• Recall the history, philosophy, construction, scope and limitations of
the prescribed repertories
• Recall the evolution, significance and application of electronic
repertories
AFFECTIVE DOMAIN
• Accept the repertory-based prescription as an alternative to materia
medica based prescription
• Demonstrate empathy with the patient and family before, during and
after case taking
• Conduct the case taking procedure sensitively
• Communicate to the patient and attendants the need for sharing
patient related information for a complete homoeopathic case taking
PSYCHOMOTOR DOMAIN
• Elicit the physical symptoms accurately
• Observe for the evidence of objective symptoms and signs
• Use computer for repertorisation
ANNUAL OBJECTIVES FOR FOURTH BHMS
A student shall be able to:
• Explain the definition, pre and post-repertorization requisites.
• Compare the Basic Repertories like Kent, Boger and
Boenninghausen’s Repertories.
• Describe the scope of Clinical and regional repertories and their
utility in clinical practice.
• Apply modern methods of repertorisation including use of computer.
OUTCOMES
The outcome of teaching repertory in IV BHMS is that a learner will be
able to:
404.1: Demonstrate knowledge of Philosophy, construction scope and
limitation of repertories
404.2: Choose an appropriate repertory for a given case and must able to
construct a proper totality based on repertory chosen
404.3: Demonstrate conversion of patient’s symptom in appropriate
rubric
404.4: Demonstrate the steps of repertorization to choose the appropriate
remedy
66
INTEGRATION
• The course in Repertory will be taught in integration with courses in
Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics where students will be taught to
repertorize cases
• The students will maintain record of five cases of Surgery,
Gynaecology and Obstetrics using Kent’s Repertory
• The course in Repertory will have integration with Materia Medica
on the topic of study of a remedy with help of Repertory
• The course in Repertory will have integration with Organon of
Medicine on the topic of Case taking and symptomatology
VALUE ADDITIONS:
• Teaching-Learning: Journal Club activity as methodology for teaching
• Evaluation: OSCE/ OSPE: One per Clinical Batch
