Teacher Guidance
These activity cards will give your students opportunities to experiment with magnets. Some
of the activities will require more teacher support than others, so please read through the
cards and choose appropriate ones for your students. You may find it helpful to complete
some of the experiments yourself to discover how much input you will need to have in
the sessions.

Magnetic Pyramid
Materials:
• Dowels or wooden • Rubber bands/
skewers (6) loom bands
Instructions:
A 1. Make a triangle-shaped base out of the dowels/wooden skewers by
overlapping three dowels and looping a rubber band or loom band around
each overlapping corner.
2. Use three more dowels to make the pyramid. Tie each to a corner of the base
first, and then join them together at the top.
3. Attach the circle magnet to one end of the string and tie the other end to the
top of the pyramid.
4. Place a rectangle magnet under the circle magnet and make sure they are
close enough to attract. You might have to adjust your string length to make
this happen.
5. Move the rectangle magnet around and see what happens to the
circle magnet.
B 1. Turn the rectangle magnet and the circle magnet to repel each other (push
away from each other).
2. Slowly lift the circle magnet out of its magnetic field and let it swing. Watch
what happens when you release it; what is happening here?
C 1. Put a rectangle magnet halfway along each dowel at the pyramid base.
2. What happens to the circle magnet once the three rectangle magnets are in
place? What do you think is causing this?
