UNIT II

Issues in the pedagogy of English in India; Differences between L1 and L2 acquisition; Learning styles
Learner factors: cognitive and affective; Learner’s Errors: Types of Errors; Academic listening and
taking notes; Speaking in an academic context; Types of reading: skimming, scanning, intensive;
Developing Vocabulary and Grammar.

UNIT III

Categories in structural grammar; Linguistic analysis in structural grammar; Linguistic analysis in


Generative Gramma; Linguistic analysis in functional grammar; Designing tasks and activities for
teaching grammar; Translation: Brief Account of theories, Translation of Philosophical and Scientific
prose.

UNIT IV

English for Specific Purpose: The Need of ESP, Classifying ESP and its branches (i.e. EAP & EOP); ESP
Course: Defining aims and objectives, Selection of Content; Identifying needs of the learners,
Techniques of needs analyses; Samples of ESP materials.
