In French, when replacing a direct object (complément d'objet direct, COD) with a pronoun,
the pronouns used depend on the gender and number of the direct object. Here are the direct
object pronouns in French:
1. Le / la / les
 "Le" (masculine singular) replaces a masculine singular direct object noun.
o Example: Je vois le film. → Je le vois
o Translation: I see the movie. → I see it.
o La (feminine singular) replaces a feminine singular direct object noun.
o Example: Elle mange la pomme. → Elle la mange.
o Translation: She is eating the apple. → She is eating it.
o Les (plural) replaces plural direct object nouns, regardless of gender.
o Example: Nous regardons les enfants. → Nous les regardons.
o Translation: We are watching the children. → We are watching them.

L'

 L' is used before a direct object noun that begins with a vowel or a silent 'h', and it
stands in for both le and la.
o Example: Je vois l'homme. → Je l'aperçois.
o Translation: I see the man. → I see him.

Usage Tips:

 Position in the Sentence: Direct object pronouns are placed directly before the verb
in simple tenses (e.g., Je le vois). In compound tenses, they are placed before the
auxiliary verb (e.g., Je l'ai vu).

Examples:
 Masculine Singular:
o Original: Il mange le gâteau. → Il le mange.
o Translation: He is eating the cake. → He is eating it.
 Feminine Singular:
o Original: Elle lit la lettre. → Elle la lit.
o Translation: She reads the letter. → She reads it.
