APPENDICES
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Osterberg Cell (O-cell) testing has been proposed for load tests on two (2) dedicated bored
cast in-place concrete piles.
The main materials to be used for the O-cell and associated instrumentation to be supplied by
Loadtest USA (Loadtest) are as follows:
Calibration reports will be provided for all embedded materials and test instruments upon
request following shipment to site.
For the test piles, it is understood that the reinforcing cage will be composed of one section.
The length of the reinforcing cage and all rebar splice details for the pile must be
communicated to Loadtest prior to manufacture and subsequent delivery of materials to site.
The following table summarizes the details of the O-cell test pile:
The following table summarizes the details of the embedded O-cell monitoring
instrumentation and strain gage placement for the test piles. The proposed elevations of the
O-cell and instrumentation are also shown in the Schematic Section of Test Pile drawings in
Appendix A.
The O-cells proposed for use on this project are calibrated to their maximum rated capacity
by the manufacturer prior to shipping. Calibration certificates will be provided following
delivery of the O-cells to the site. A sample calibration is included in Appendix D.
For each test pile, four Linear Vibrating Wire Displacement Transducers (LVWDTs Geokon
Model 4450) will be fixed between the bottom and top steel bearing plates of each O-cell
assembly to directly measure O-cell expansion.
The above noted traditional telltale casings and rod extensometers extending from the top of
the O-cell assembly to top of the pile will be used to allow for measurement of the upward
O-cell top plate displacement with respect to the top of the pile.
Two lengths of pipe extending from the bottom of the fracture plane of the O-cell assembly to
the top of pile to vent the annulus between the O-cell and the side wall of the excavation in
the pile formed by expansion of the O-cell assembly.
Vibrating wire sister bar strain gages (Geokon Model 4911) will be used to assess the load
distribution along the piles above the O-cell assemblies. Two strain gages will be installed at
each elevation according to the table in the section above. A sample calibration is included in
Appendix D.
A single level Osterberg Cell assembly will be installed in each test pile. The assembly will be
installed with the required hydraulic supply and instrumentation, attached to the reinforcing
cage (Appendix B). The final O-cell and instrumentation elevations will be based upon an
assessment of the soil investigation parameters provided by the Engineer. The project
Engineer must approve the final elevations of both the O-cell assembly and instrumentation.
Bored pile excavation will proceed under the piling contractor’s work plan as approved by the
Engineer. Upon reaching the tip of pile elevation, the excavation base will be cleaned and
approved by the Engineer for concrete placement. The O-cell assembly, bearing plates,
related hydraulic supply, and instrumentation will then be lowered into the excavation
attached to the steel reinforcing cage. A typical installation sequence is included in
Appendix C.
The O-cell assemblies will comprise the Osterberg cells and steel bearing plates as described
below and as depicted in Appendix B. Fabrication of the O-cell assemblies will be carried out
on site or at the piling contractor’s workshop, where the O-cells will be accurately positioned
and welded between the steel bearing plates. To ensure that no damage occurs to the O-cells
during handling or lifting of the assembly, temporary reinforcement or similar will be installed
between the bearing plates to minimize stresses on the O-cells. A minimum of two pieces will
be welded between the top and bottom of each O-cell assembly, according to Loadtest
recommendations on site.1
The completed assembly will then be welded to the reinforcing cage, perpendicular to the
long axis of the cage at the approved location. The attachment to the reinforcing cage will be
carried out by fillet welding the vertical steel bearing plates to the cage as recommended by
Loadtest and approved by the Engineer. Once the assembly has been welded to the cage
and the cage instrumented according to plan, the cage section may be prepared for lifting and
installation into the pile excavation. All welding will be performed by the contractor. Loadtest
representatives will observe the field assembly and installation procedures noted above.
The lifting of the instrumented cage section to vertical will be carried out using a strong back,
beam or multiple pick points to ensure the cage remains relatively straight during lifting. All
reinforcing cages will be fabricated by the piling contractor with sufficient lifting points and
rigging as required for their preferred lifting technique. The piling contractor shall coordinate
with Loadtest regarding the lifting of the cage to potentially avoid damage to the cage and any
attached instruments. For O-cell assembly centralization requirements, a minimum of four (4)
suitable width spacer wheels should be attached to the top bearing plate at equidistant
centers around the plate perimeter to ensure that the O-cell assembly is positioned centrally
in the excavation. Further, for cage centralization, a minimum of four (4) spacer wheels
should be attached at various elevations to the sides of the cage attached at equidistant
centers around the cage perimeter.
The fully assembled cage will be lowered into the excavation and supported from the casing
with the O-cell assembly positioned at the specified final elevation. At no time prior to
concreting should the cage be allowed to set on the excavation bottom. Loadtest personnel
will observe all installation procedures described above and will advise the piling contractor
as appropriate. Our understanding is that the contractor will install the tremie pipe following
cage installation in the excavation. The tremie pipe must be totally slick, free of all couplers,
along its entire length below the O-cell. Section 2.0 includes details of the O-cell position and
the maximum space available for the tremie pipe. Cut-outs will be provided in the O-cell steel
bearing plates to allow access for the tremie pipe and allow for concrete to flow through the
O-cell assembly. The diameter of the tremie pipe used in this pile must be smaller than the
maximum size indicated in Section 2.0. A tremie pipe guide shall be constructed between one
opening in the top plate of the O-cell assembly and the main vertical channels to guide the
1The temporary reinforcement will be cut once the cage is vertical and is being lowered into the open excavation
such that no steel crosses the O-cell fracture plane.
tremie pipe through the O-cell assembly. Loadtest personnel will direct the construction of the
guide on site prior to cage lifting.
The approved concrete mix must allow for slump (greater than 20 cm preferred) and
workability to enable the concrete to pass through and completely encapsulate the O-cell
assembly and instrumentation. The mix design should also contain sufficient retarding agent
to maintain workability for the entire duration of the pile concreting procedure. In addition to
concrete samples (cylinders) collected for quality assurance procedures, Loadtest requires
the contractor take sufficient additional samples (a minimum of 4) for determining
compressive strength and modulus of the concrete at the following times; a) prior to testing to
determine if the pile concrete is of sufficient compressive strength to start the O-cell test and,
b) on the date of the O-cell test. Sufficient spares should be provided in case strengths are
lower than expected and additional samples require testing after further curing.
Testing may commence after the pile concrete has reached a minimum required strength
indicated in the pile specifications. Loadtest recommends a minimum curing period of 7 days,
and 85% of the concrete design strength, to facilitate uniform concrete curing prior to testing.
The loading schedules, included in Appendix F, are prepared in accordance with ASTM
D8169/D8169M-18 Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Bi-Directional Static
Axial Compressive Load and the project pile testing specifications. The load cycle is
performed and reported on using Procedure A: Quick Test. (Note: these procedures are also
in general accordance with ASTM D1143/D1143M-07 Standard Test Methods for Deep
Foundations Under Static Axial Compressive Load). Instrument readings will be automatically
recorded at a minimum of every 60 seconds for the duration of the test.
During loading, the O-cells will be internally pressurized in the proposed loading increments,
creating equal upward and downward forces.
The O-cell load is determined by relating the applied hydraulic pressure to the O-cell load
calibration. A calibrated, high-pressure bourdon gage will be used to verify the input pressure
on the pump line and a calibrated pressure transducer will record the pressure on the return
line for reporting purposes.
The O-cell assembly will assess the combined side shear and unit end bearing below the
O-cell and the upper shear portion above the O-cell. The load will be removed and the
testing completed once one of the following situations occurs:
Key elements of foundation response, including displacement and strain are measured and
recorded automatically during testing. All displacements are recorded to the nearest 0.025
millimeters and strains to the nearest 0.75 microstrain (0.0000075 mm/mm).
Expansion of the O-cell assembly is measured directly using Linear Vibrating Wire
Displacement Transducers (LVWDTs Geokon Model 4450). The LVWDTs are fixed
between the top and bottom bearing plates of the O-cell assembly and spaced at 90
degrees.
Top of pile displacement will be monitored utilizing digital optical survey levels (Leica
NA3000 Series). The levels will be set on tripods located at least 5 pile diameters from
the center of the test pile on stable ground. Details are included in Appendix E.
The strain distribution along the pile will be measured using Geokon Model 4911
vibrating wire sister bar strain gages. For each level, the gages will be set in pairs
diametrically opposed. The total number of levels per pile will be determined upon
final pile design information.
The measured displacement and strain data provide for the following:
All LVWDTs and strain gages are connected directly to a DataTaker DT 80G or 515/615 Data
logger. The logger is connected to a laptop computer for real time monitoring. This
arrangement allows LVWDTs and strain gauge readings to be recorded simultaneously and
stored automatically at 30 to 60 second intervals during the test (depending on the number of
instruments being read). The digital survey levels will be connected to the same laptop
computer and synchronized to record readings at the same time as the data logger readings.
Upon completion of the load test, a copy of any testing notes and computer-collected raw
data may be given to the client’s representative on site, if requested. The client will be issued
a load-displacement curve within 3 working days (upon request) and a final report within 7
working days, in accordance with the contract, allowing for a review of the report by the
client’s P.E. and/or Engineers. The final report will include the following:
Executive summary of key test data, calculated unit side shear and end bearing and
equivalent top load displacements;
Description of the construction procedure;
Description of the O-cell and instrumentation installed;
Description of the testing procedure;
Discussion of test results;
Presentation of mobilized unit side shear resistance and end bearing resistance;
Presentation of the equivalent top load–displacement behavior for the test pile;
Discussion and interpretation, if applicable, of any testing irregularities;
Tabulation of collected data including pressures, loads, displacements, strains and
calculated loads from strain gages;
Graphical presentation of load-time, displacement-time, load-displacement, load
distribution calculated from strain gages, mobilized unit side shear resistance,
mobilized unit end bearing resistance, equivalent top-load displacement, creep limit
analysis;
Supplemental plots (if applicable) may include hyperbolic curve fitting
Loadtest field personnel will have sufficient training and experience to ensure quality
workmanship in a timely manner. All fieldwork, both installation and testing, will be carried
out by qualified and competent Loadtest engineers and technicians. These LOADTEST
personnel will make all hydraulic and instrumentation connections as well as observe
operations conducted by the contractor and advise as necessary.
The onsite quality assurance and control of the O-cell assembly, installation and testing
procedure includes, but is not limited to the following:
1. The fabrication of the O-cell assembly and attachment to the reinforcing cage are
monitored and the perpendicular positioning of the O-cell to the long axis of the
reinforcing cage is confirmed to be within acceptable tolerance;
2. The tack welds holding the O-cell assembly closed are visually checked prior to lifting
and installation into the excavation;
3. LOADTEST personnel will discuss the hoisting and lifting plan with the contractor for
the cage, to insure the contractor can limit the potential deflections of the cage within
the acceptable tolerance of 1/25;
4. Immediately prior to lowering the O-cell assembly into the excavation, the
perpendicular alignment of the O-cell is again checked to be within acceptable
tolerance.
5. Insertion of the tremie pipe and placement of concrete is observed, in order to
minimize the potential for damage to the O-cell assembly and instrumentation.
6. All vibrating wire instruments will be checked for functionality prior to lifting the cage,
after installation into the excavation and after concreting.
7. The hydraulic hose assembly is tested to 68.9 MPa (10,000 psi) prior to delivery to site.
A copy of the pressure testing certificates from the hydraulic hose company preparing
the crimped hoses will be made available upon request.
8. All cables, hydraulic hoses and pipes will be visually checked and accounted for after
concreting, cleaned as necessary and tied to the cage projecting above ground.
Loadtest will coordinate with the piling contractor to protect the instrumentation from
damage until the commencement of test setup.
9. To avoid loss of recorded data, the data is stored in multiple places: on the data logger,
in two places on the laptop computer and on a flash drive. Notes during testing as well
as key data readings are manually transcribed onto test recording sheets during the
test as a backup. If any of the automated equipment malfunctions, backup manual
readout devices (GK404) will be on site and can be used to collect data from the
embedded and external gages.
10. All external measurement devices (above ground devices) used in measuring the pile
head displacements, telltale displacement, reference beam displacement (if applicable)
and O-cell pressure can be replaced in the event of malfunction. All devices are
calibrated individually and certificates for each device will be made available prior to
starting the O-cell test.
The O-cell Risk Assessment Analysis included in Appendix G summarizes the management
of all risks associated with performing the specified O-cell test.
Dismantling of the test pile or cutting of any wires, hoses or piping shall not be undertaken
prior to formal acceptance of the load test results by the Owner or Owner’s Engineer. After
the completion of the load test and with prior approval by the Owner or Owner’s Engineer,
remove any equipment, material, waste, etc. which are not to be a part of the finished
structure. The Contractor shall take ownership and dispose of the cut off section and related
material.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Static lateral load testing has been specified for two (2) locations on the above referenced
project. Loadtest will be providing the lateral load testing services for the project. The purpose
of lateral testing is to produce load-displacement data for use in subsequent verification of the
lateral performance of the CFA and bored piles.
The lateral load test method loads the head of the test pile using one or more reaction piles
for reaction. The load is determined by a calibrated load-cell as well as relating the applied
hydraulic pressure to the jack calibration. Both a calibrated Bourdon gage and electronic
pressure transducer monitor the applied jack pressure.
The main materials to be used for the hydraulic jack assembly and associated
instrumentation to be supplied by Loadtest USA (Loadtest) are as follows:
Calibration reports will be provided for all test instruments upon request following
shipment to site.
For the test piles, it is understood that the reinforcing cage will be composed of one section.
The length of the reinforcing cage and all rebar splice details for the pile must be
communicated to Loadtest prior to manufacture and subsequent delivery of materials to site.
The lateral test piles will use one or more indicator piles as the reaction system to perform
testing. A rebar cage and concrete or grout will be delivered to each according to standard
procedures during the construction of each reaction pile. Care must be taken to ensure the
piles are oriented properly to the line of loading especially in the case where multiple reaction
piles will be used.
The loading system will be supported against both vertical and lateral movement during
testing by use of a wide flange section. Flat bearing surfaces will be cast into the loading
faces of both the reaction and lateral test pile to form a uniform surface, centered and
perpendicular to the intended line of loading. Conceptual drawings of the loading assembly
are showing as two possible alternates in Appendix A.
4.0 INSTRUMENTATION
The instrumentation provided by Loadtest for measuring displacements will consist of the
following:
The top of the test pile will be monitored for lateral displacement using two LVWDTs
(Geokon Model 4450) read to the nearest 0.025 mm.
Two Geokon Model 6300 unidirectional inclinometers (one bi-directional level) will be
used to monitor tilt at the pile head in two orthogonal directions (0° and 90°) to the line
of loading.
All instrumentation will be monitored and collected by a Datataker (Model
DT-615) data acquisition system at 30 second intervals over the course of the test.
The general deflection of the reaction beam will be monitored with one LVWDT
(Geokon Model 4450) during testing to ensure the maximum 100-mm of stroke for the
jack is not exceeded.
Calibrations for all vibrating wire instrumentation used on this project will be made available to
the Engineer prior to installation upon request, after shipment to site.
Testing may commence after the pile concrete has reached a minimum required strength
indicated in the pile specifications. Loadtest recommends a minimum curing period of 7 days,
and 85% of the concrete design strength, to facilitate uniform concrete curing prior to testing.
The lateral load test will be performed in general accordance with ASTM D3966-07 Procedure
A - Standard Loading up to a test load of 1.26 MN (200% of design load). The load will be
applied laterally between the test pile and the reaction system. The loading schedules
indicating the duration and magnitude of each load increment is presented in Appendix B.
Upon completion of load testing, verbal results and an electronic copy of the raw field data
shall be provided to the client. A final report will be issued within seven (7) working days after
completion of load testing. If requested, preliminary data may be provided within three (3)
days.
Dismantling of the test pile or cutting of any wires, hoses or piping shall not be undertaken
prior to formal acceptance of the load test results by the Owner or Owner’s Engineer. After
the completion of the load test and with prior approval by the Owner or Owner’s Engineer,
remove any equipment, material, waste, etc. which are not to be a part of the finished
structure. The Contractor shall take ownership and dispose of the cut off section and related
material.
The general approach to installation of the lateral test equipment is to have zero defects. To
this end, all instrumentation is calibrated individually by the manufacturer or by Loadtest to
ensure proper accuracy and functionality of all devices prior to shipment.
Qualified Loadtest and contractor field personnel with sufficient training and experience will
be utilized to ensure the highest possible quality of workmanship. All electronic components
are checked for proper functioning before and after assembly on the reinforcing cage. We
provide a system of redundancy with a minimum of two instruments for each specific
measurement in the event that an instrument is damaged and malfunctions during the
installation and concreting procedures.
9.0 SAFETY:

APPENDICES
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Traditional top load testing has been proposed for two (2) dedicated CFA (continuous flight
augercast) concrete piles.
The main materials to be used for the top load test and associated instrumentation to be
supplied by Loadtest USA (Loadtest) are as follows:
Calibration reports will be provided for all embedded materials and test instruments upon
request following shipment to site.
For the test piles, it is understood that the reinforcing cage will be composed of one section.
The length of the reinforcing cage and all rebar splice details for the pile must be
communicated to Loadtest prior to manufacture and subsequent delivery of materials to site.
The following table summarizes the details of the instrumentation and strain gage placement
for the test piles. The proposed elevations of the instrumentation are also shown in the
Schematic Section of Test Pile drawings in Appendix A.
The hydraulic jack assembly proposed for use on this project is calibrated to its maximum
rated capacity by the manufacturer prior to shipping. Calibration certificates will be provided
following delivery of the jack assembly to the site.
Vibrating wire sister bar strain gages (Geokon Model 4911) will be used to assess the load
distribution along the piles. Two strain gages will be installed at each elevation according to
the table in the section above.
Continuous-flight augercast (CFA) pile excavation will proceed under the contractor’s work
plan as approved by the Engineer. Upon reaching the final tip elevation, the continuous-flight
auger is extracted, concurrent with placement of grout until level of grout reaches near ground
surface.
For cage centralization, a minimum of four (4) spacer wheels should be
attached at various elevations to the sides of the cage attached at equidistant centers around
the cage perimeter.
The fully assembled cage will be lowered into the excavation. Loadtest personnel will
observe all installation procedures described above and will advise the piling contractor as
appropriate.
Loadtest requires the contractor take sufficient additional samples (a minimum of 4) for
determining compressive strength and modulus of the concrete at the following times; a) prior
to testing to determine if the pile concrete is of sufficient compressive strength to start the test
and, b) on the date of the test.
The loading schedules, included in Appendix B, are prepared in accordance with ASTM
D1143 Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial Compressive Load
and the project pile testing specifications. The load cycle is performed and reported on using
Procedure A: Quick Test. Instrument readings will be automatically recorded at a minimum of
every 60 seconds for the duration of the test.
During loading, the hydraulic jack will be internally pressurized in the proposed loading
increments, creating equal upward and downward forces.
The applied top load is determined by relating the applied hydraulic pressure to the hydraulic
jack assembly calibration. A calibrated, high-pressure bourdon gage will be used to verify the
input pressure on the pump line and a calibrated pressure transducer will record the pressure
on the return line for reporting purposes.
The load will be removed and the testing completed once one of the following situations
occurs:
Key elements of foundation response, including displacement and strain are measured and
recorded automatically during testing. All displacements are recorded to the nearest 0.025
millimeters and strains to the nearest 0.75 microstrain (0.0000075 mm/mm).
Top of pile displacement will be monitored utilizing digital optical survey levels (Leica
NA3000 Series). The levels will be set on tripods located at least 5 pile diameters from
the center of the test pile on stable ground.
Compression displacement is measured using LVWDTs attached to the top of the pile.
The strain distribution along the pile will be measured using Geokon Model 4911
vibrating wire sister bar strain gages. For each level, the gages will be set in pairs
diametrically opposed.
Executive summary of key test data, calculated unit side shear and end bearing and
top load displacements;
Description of the construction procedure;
Description of the instrumentation installed;
Description of the testing procedure;
Discussion of test results;
Presentation of mobilized unit side shear resistance and end bearing resistance;
Presentation of the top load–displacement behavior for the test pile;
Discussion and interpretation, if applicable, of any testing irregularities;
Tabulation of collected data including pressures, loads, displacements, strains and
calculated loads from strain gages;
Graphical presentation of load-time, displacement-time, load-displacement, load
distribution calculated from strain gages, mobilized unit side shear resistance,
mobilized unit end bearing resistance, top-load displacement, creep limit analysis;
The onsite quality assurance and control of the installation and testing procedure includes,
but is not limited to the following:
2. All vibrating wire instruments will be checked for functionality prior to lifting the cage,
after installation into the excavation and after concreting.
3. The hydraulic hose assembly is tested to 68.9 MPa (10,000 psi) prior to delivery to site.
A copy of the pressure testing certificates from the hydraulic hose company preparing
the crimped hoses will be made available upon request.
4. All cables and pipes will be visually checked and accounted for after concreting,
cleaned as necessary and tied to the cage projecting above ground. Loadtest will
coordinate with the piling contractor to protect the instrumentation from damage until
the commencement of test setup.
6. All external measurement devices (above ground devices) used in measuring the pile
head displacements, telltale displacement, reference beam displacement (if applicable)
and hydraulic jack pressure can be replaced in the event of malfunction. All devices
are calibrated individually and certificates for each device will be made available prior
to starting the top load test.
Dismantling of the test pile or cutting of any wires, hoses or piping shall not be undertaken
prior to formal acceptance of the load test results by the Owner or Owner’s Engineer. After
the completion of the load test and with prior approval by the Owner or Owner’s Engineer,
remove any equipment, material, waste, etc. which are not to be a part of the finished
structure. The Contractor shall take ownership and dispose of the cut off section and related
material.
