Experiment2 2

Experiment

Inorganic chemical reactions can be classified as combination or synthesis, decomposition,

single replacement and double decomposition or double replacement.

Combination or synthesis involves the union of two or more elements or compounds to produce
only one product which is a more complex substance.

Decomposition reactions occur when a single compound decomposes, generally upon heating,
into two or more elements or compounds as products.

In a single replacement reaction, a free element (metal or nonmetal) replaces another element
in a compound forming a new compound and resulting in the release of the element displaced.
In this reaction,a more active element is required to displace a less active one.

In a double decomposition reaction, the reactants, both of which are compounds, react and
exchange their metallic (positive) and nonmetallic (negative) parts thus forming two new
compounds.

In a neutralization reaction,an acid reacts with a base to form salt and water.

At the end of the experiment, the students will be able to:

1. Analyze some typical reactions such as combination , decomposition, single replacement, and
double decomposition

2. Identify the products of some typical reactions

MATERIALS/APPARATUS

magnesium ribbon copper (II) carbonate Test tubeholder medicinedropper

match or lighter HCl silvernitrate 6 test tubes

calcium hydroxide sodium hydroxide Bunsenburner

In the following experiments, observe the appearance of the substances before and after every reaction. Note
any change that takes place. Identify the type of reaction involved in each case.

1. Combine the following sets of substances in separate test tubes. Observe the results. Use a pinch for
each solid substance and 2 mL for eachliquid

a. magnesium and hydrochloric acid

b. hydrochloric acid and silver nitrate

Heating copper (II) carbonate

2. Ignition of magnesium ribbon

3. Reaction of carbon dioxide with calcium hydroxide

4. Reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide

Experiment 2
