TOPIC: GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF SOCIAL STUDIES

Objectives are goals an individual or group aims at to get the very best of their performance.
Some of the general objectives of social studies include the following:
1. Critical thinking: Social studies teaches students about history and enables them
understand how society has evolved. It also helps students develop an ability to think
critically about societal issues and learn how to address them based on their
understanding of social values.
2. Social understanding: It allows students to develop an understanding of society and
the human condition.
3. Integrating ideas: Social studies involves a number of subjects including history,
geography and economics. Students learn how to integrate ideas from different
disciplines to come up with reasonable decisions so that they are better able to
identify problems affecting the society.
Other objectives of social studies include:
1. Social studies educate students on becoming patriotic and responsible citizens.
2. Social studies teaches us our roles and responsibilities in the environment we find
ourselves.
3. It helps us develop critical thinking abilities.
4. Social studies prepares us to participate competently and productively as a concerned
citizen and teaches us to address societal and global concerns using literature
technology and other identifiable community resources.
Generally, social studies educates students on citizenship, providing them with the
knowledge, skills and attitude that will help them become responsible citizens.

CONTENT

Types of crimes in our Environment.

1. Murder: This is a crime of intentionally killing a person.


2. Kidnapping: This is the act of abducting someone and holding them for captive. they
demand for ransom for the release of the victim

3. Human trafficking: This is the act or practice of illegally transporting people from one
country or area to another, typically for the purpose of forced labour or sexual exploitation.

4. Rape: This is an at of forcing someone to have sex when they are unwilling, using
violence or threatening behaviour.
5. Thuggery.

7. Theft: This is the act of stealing another person’s property.

Abuses to which children could be subjected
Meaning of sexual abuse:
Sexual abuse is any form or sort of non-consensual sexual contact, i.e a sexual relationship
without each other’s consent. Sexual abuse can happen to men, women, teenagers and even
children.
Types of sexual abuse
1. Rape
2. Incest. Incest is the crime of two members of the same family having sexual
intercourse, for example a father and daughter, or a brother and sister. They are
forbidden by law.

emotional imbalance.

School crime has become a serious problem in many countries. Teenagers and youth
mostly get involved in criminal activities in school before. However, there are some forms of
common crimes in school and they are:

1. Cultism: This is the activities or practices of a group of people with one common spiritual,
or philosophical belief.

2. Examination malpractice: This is a form of cheating before, during or after the


examination.

3. Fighting: This is the displaying or engaging in violence, conflicts or aggression

4. Violations of rules specific to schools also occur.

5. Stealing

Drug abuse is the abnormal intake of drug or any other substances.

Safety is a situation which prevents any form of injury while performing any activities.
Safety is a precaution against injury while performing any activities.

e. School food should be hygienically prepared and served to avoid food
poisoning.
Work Environment:-
a. Original sockets, plugs and other electrical appliance should be used in offices

instance restaurant.
d. Periodic training for staff on how to prevent forms of accidents in the work

1. Road accident: Many road accidents occur when individuals are drunk and are under
the influence of drugs.

responsibilities in the family, especially financial responsibilities because they would
have diverted all their money into buying drugs thereby neglecting their
responsibilities at home
Solution to drug abuse
Drug abuse can be prevented in the following ways
1. The school curriculum: The inclusion of the topic in primary and post primary
curriculum is a good decision on part of the government it sensitizes the school
children or what drug abuse is and its effects on their future
2. Family awareness: Through mass Medici parents have more information about drug
abuse and its effects parents will in turn educate their children and advice them
against it

1. Female Circumcision: it can also be known as female genital mutilation. It involves the
painful removal of sensitive female genital organs. It is mostly performed on infant. This

2. Slavery: This is a slate of being subjected to all forms of hardship, suffering and violence
without any right to resist or fight back in any form.

3. Child marriage: This is a practice in which female children are given out in marriage
at their teenage years. This is mostly practices by the Hausa.
4. Widowhood: Maltreatment of widows is prevalent I many communities in Nigeria.
Some cultures force the widow to drink water used in bathing the dead on while some
widows cannot have their bath until their husbands are buried.
In some other societies women cannot go out of the house until certain while some widows
are compelled to wear black dresses for certain days or a year after the death of their
husbands.
5. Preference for Male Chile: In many Nigerian cultures, there is a strong preference for a
male child. A woman with a female child in the family is not recognized and respected.
She would receive all forms of insult, embarrassment, scolding and maltreatment from the
husband and his family until she has a male child.
6. Violence against Women: This is common in some societies where men beat their wives
with cane, horse wipes, slap and use rod. The reason could be for coming back home
late, not cooking on time or not taking care of the children.
