1. Calculate τr, τa and τ for angle of incidence 15o for the following glass cover system
Number of covers: 2, Thickness of each cover: 4 mm,
Refractive index of glass relative to air: 1.52, Extinction coefficient of glass: 15 m-1
2. A flat plate collector is made up of copper absorber plate, copper tubes fixed on the
underside and one glass cover. The following data is given.
Angle of incidence of beam radiation : 25o
Tilt factor for beam radiation : 0.94
Tilt factor for diffuse radiation : 0.97
Tilt factor for reflected radiation : 0.004
Ib : 750 W/m2
Id : 250 W/m2
Refractive index of glass relative to air : 1.526
Extinction coefficient of glass : 19 m-1
Thickness of glass cover : 4 mm
Plate absorptivity for solar radiation : 0.94
Calculate
Total solar flux incident on the collector

3. Using the following expression for Nu:
Nu = 0.157(Ra cosβ)0.285
Determine overall heat transfer coefficient (UL) for a flat plate collector system
inclined at 45o to the horizontal and facing south. Ambient air temperature is 20oC
and glass and absorber plate temperatures are 45oC and 69oC respectively. System is
provided with 6 cm thick insulation at bottom. Thermal conductivity of insulation is
0.04 W/mK. The air space between absorber plate and glass cover has optimum
thickness of 7.5 cm and emissivity of glass and plate is 0.88 and 0.95 respectively and
wind velocity is 5 m/s.
Properties of air at 57oC are
ν=1.88x10-5 m2/s, α=2.69x10-5 m2/s, k=0.028 W/mK

4. For a collector with a top loss coefficient of 6.6 W/m2K, calculate the overall loss
coefficient for the following data:
Back insulation thickness=45 mm, Insulation thermal conductivity=0.04 W/mK
Collector bank length = 8m, Collector bank width = 2.5m
Collector thickness = 80 mm, Edge insulation thickness = 20mm
5. Calculate the overall loss coefficient for a flat-plate collector with two glass covers
for the given data:
Size of the absorber plate ( L1 X L2 ) :1.90 m x 0.90 m
Spacing between plate and first glass cover ( L ): 4 cm
Spacing between first and second glass cover ( L ): 4 cm
Plate emissivity ( Ɛp ): 0.92, Glass cover emissivity ( Ɛc ): 0.88
Collector tilt ( β ): 20o, Mean plate temperature ( Tpm ): 70oC
Ambient air temperature ( Ta ): 24oC, Wind speed ( V∞): 2.5 m/s
Back insulation thickness (δb): 8 cm,

6. A flat plate collector system has aluminium absorber plate (kp=211 W/mK) of
thickness 0.35 mm and area 1.5 m2 and it has ten riser tubes of diameter 0.025 m
each. The length of tubes being 1m, find out collector efficiency factor F’ for this
collector if the convective heat transfer coefficient from inner tube surface to water is
50 W/m2K. Overall loss coefficient is 7.2 W/m2K. Neglect tube thickness

air outlet temperature for the solar air heater in which mean fluid temperature is 55oC
for following data
