Author: retold By Ai-Ling Louie
Genre: Fiction
Subgenre/ Form of Prose: Folktale
Theme: Good people are rewarded, and wicked people are punished. / Good
always wins.
Summary:
Yeh-Shen was the orphan daughter in her stepmother’s home, but the stepmother favored
her own daughter. Yeh-Shen’s friend, the fish, would come out of the water, rest on the shore,
and she should feed it from her scarce resources. Her stepmother put on Yeh-Shen’s coat, lured
out the fish, and killed it. As Yeh-Shen grieved, an old man appeared and told her to retrieve the
bones, for they had power to grant wishes. Yen-Shen then wished on the bones for food. When
the spring festival arrived (where young men and women could find partners), Yeh-Shen was
not allowed to go. The bones of the fish made her an azure gown, a kingfisher feather cloak, and
shoes of solid gold. When it looked like her stepmother would recognize her, she fled, leaving
behind one gold slipper. In searching for his “bride”, the king noticed Yeh-Shen’s tiny feet, and
when she tried on the slipper, her spring festival clothes reappeared on her.

The Price of Experience
Nowadays, volunteer work and unpaid internships are becoming more and more
popular, as young people often choose to work for little or no wages at all in order to gain
essential skills or experience in their line of work. But have you ever heard of paying
your boss to work for him or her? For some professions, such as law, fashion or banking,
the number of applicants for each intern position used to be so great that companies
started to sell these positions to hopeful candidates. Internships sold for thousands at a
time; a week’s placement at a
Well-known bank sold for £1,500, and the price of working for a month at a major fashion
house reached as high as £10,000. Often the money raised was donated to charity.
Difficult economic times have helped this market expand and have led to the creation
of several companies which sell ‘internship packages’, often including accommodation
and meals. Now young people can ‘buy’ experience in any profession, at a variety of
companies across the world.
So is it worth it? A salesperson from one of these companies is certain that it is. ‘In today’s
difficult job market, young people need to have some advantage. The experience they
gain during an internship adds great value to their CV. They could even end up getting a
job at the firm where they were interns’, Peter Radcliff says.
However, student Helen Wright has a very different view. ‘The idea that these more
attractive jobs should go to the richest graduate – or, as is more likely, to the graduate
with the richest parents – is very worrying. We want companies to understand that this
is not beneficial for them either; the industry doesn’t necessarily get talented and
enthusiastic workers; they just get those that can pay. It sends the message that ability
does not matter’.
Although many interns gain valuable experience, that is sadly not always the case.
Valerie Fischer paid for a two-month internship at a well-known fashion magazine last
year and was left feeling that she had wasted her money. ‘I did a lot of useless data-entry’,
she complains. ‘I was responsible for getting my boss’s coffee every morning and running
around town taking back the clothes from photo shoots. While it may have been valuable
life experience, I don’t feel I learnt anything about the industry’. Career adviser Jane
Wilmot agrees that an internship sale is a risky business. ‘Ideally, students should be
given internships based on hard work alone. Paying is just not necessary; any career
service can point them in the direction of free internships. Anyone thinking of buying
their way into an internship should research it very carefully to make sure they are
indeed getting what they are paying for’.

On the Trail of a Wind Developer
Whispering Willow, Pioneer Prairie, Crystal Lake. The Spirit, Lost Lakes, Buena
Vista, up on Buffalo Ridge. I have to double-check that I’m not looking at a map of healing
centers for yoga and hot stone massage. The chatty waitress in The Lost Spoon café in
the city of Iowa assures me that these are all names of wind farms in Minnesota and Iowa.
‘As I’m sure you’ve noticed,’ she says proudly, pointing at a small, blue rubbish bin
blowing down the street, ‘Iowa’s one of the windiest states in the US’. I watch the fast
progress of the rubbish bin while continuing to enjoy my baked apple pancake. I check
my Beaufort Wind Scale chart. ‘Larger tree branches moving, whistling in wires.’ That
seems about right. Force 6, Strong Breeze. Coming from a state that only ever experiences
‘wind felt on face, leaves rustle’, which the chart calls Force 2, Light Breeze, I’m not
familiar with the concept of feeling proud about extreme weather conditions. However,
the
Iowans have reason to feel proud of their blowing gales as it is one of the leading
states in wind energy production in the US. More than 27% of the state’s electricity comes
from wind, the highest state percentage in the nation. I look at my watch. Nine fifty. It is
time to meet Scott Taylor, assistant wind developer for IOW, Iowa Wind.
Five minutes later, Scott, a tall, thin, pale-skinned man, whose appearance brings
wind turbines to mind, finds me at The Lost Spoon, as arranged. Scott has just had a
meeting with the mayor to negotiate an agreement to develop a wind power facility on a
local hilltop. After friendly introductions, we get into Scott’s SUV and drive up to the site.
The rosy-cheeked farmer, Jack Moore, is waiting for us and together we walk around the
fields. Scott asks lots of questions and makes a note of some rocky areas where it would
be too expensive to build. The farmer invites us into his home for some coffee and Scott
shows him some photos of wind turbines in Europe with cows grazing below. Scott
assures Jack that turbines have no negative effect on farmland or farm animals and Jack
looks satisfied.
Next stop is the hotel where Scott is staying. Scott participates in a conference call
with the engineers back in his office. IOW is an independent power company, so they
have to work out the approximate cost of connecting to the grid, the central electricity
system. During the conference, Scott receives a message from the specialist who has
carried out an archaeological study of the site. ‘All clear from Danielle!’ he announces to
the team. Scott turns to me to explain, ‘There are no remains of historical structures
anywhere on the land. It’s good news for the project, because if we found evidence of
historical structures, the town would probably refuse us a building permit’. I wonder
what kind of historical structures they might have expected to find under a hilltop in
Iowa.

The conference over, we drive to another farmer’s home in the next town. The
farmer had heard that IOW were planning on building nearby and he wanted to show
them a windy site. As we walk around the land, Scott points out the trees that are
permanently bent over because of strong one-direction winds. Despite my lack of
experience I say confidently, ‘This would make a great site for wind turbines’ ‘It might,’
says Scott, as his eyes circle the area. We would have to install a data tower and measure
wind speed for a year. High winds are good, but too many violent changes in the local
wind pattern damage the turbines, which mean high maintenance costs.’
**Scott tells the farmer that he will talk to the team about looking into the site in
greater depth and then it’s time to return to The Lost Spoon.(7)
