How will automation affect employment?

Automation is rapidly changing the landscape of employment, raising


questions about its effects on the job market. Automation shows great
challenges but also opportunities for people looking for jobs in the future.
The move towards automation should be considered for how it can balance
between job displacement and the creation of new ones or making current
jobs more productive.

Automation is changing the job market significantly. This is supported by an


article published by the New York Times stating that even “white-collar jobs”,
are becoming more at risk (Roose, 2021). This highlights that no workers are
safe due to A.I algorithms outperforming many skills such as of doctors and
lawyers. This is further supported by an estimate of “47% of total US
employment” being in risk of replacement (Frey CB & Osborne MA, 2017, p.
265). Once again, indicating that a large number of jobs are likely to become
automatable in a few years. While this may seem concerning, the article
suggests that automation can still be beneficial (Frey CB, p. 255). By taking
over repetitive tasks, automation can free people to work on more creative
and meaningful projects.

Moreover, Jobs of Tomorrow: Mapping Opportunity in the New


Economy (2020) emphasizes that the
most valuable jobs will require a
combination of technical and human skills.
Some include empathy, creativity, and
critical thinking. As well as the effects of
automation are likely to differ in several
sectors as stated in the article “Will robots
Really Steal our jobs?” (Hawkswoth et al., Figure 1. Financial services jobs could
2018). For instance, it can be useful for be relatively vulnerable to automation
financial services, as seen in figure 1, by enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
However, “social skills and the human touch” remain important (Hawkswoth
et al., 2018). Thus, fields like healthcare and education will continue to rely
on human interaction.

To conclude, while automation may disrupt traditional jobs, it also brings new
opportunities. By focusing on education, training, and developing unique
human skills, we can adapt to these changes. Embracing innovation allows
us to work alongside technology, building a future where people thrive in
more meaningful and creative roles.
