NOTES BASED ON NETWORKING

INTERNET

The internet is defined as a network of millions of computers

connected worldwide through a telephone lines or cables. We can
relate the term internet to the telephone network or the interstate
highway system, which is spread across and interconnected to each
other

Compared to a small network of two computers, the internet is

much broader network that uses common communication standard
and interfaces to provide the physical backbone for many interesting
applications

WWW

The WWW (World Wide Web) commonly known as the Web, is a way
of accessing information over the internet. It contains millions of
documents called Web pages.

Sir Tim Berners Lee, along with Robert Cailliau invented the
World Wide Web while working at CERN (European Council of Nuclear
research) in 1990.

HOW DOES THE WWW WORK

The web browser connects to the web server and sends an HTTP
request (via the protocol stack) for the desired web page. The web
server receives the request and checks for the desired page. If the
page exists, the web server sends it. If the server cannot find the
requested page, it will send an HTTP 404 error message.

BASIC INTERNET TERMINOLOGY

SERVER: A server is a computer or system that provides resources,

data services, or programs to other computers.

CLIENT: A client is a computer that connects to and uses the resources

of a remote computer, or server.

PROTOCOL

Protocol is a set of rules or procedures for transmitting data between

electronic devices, such as computers. In order for computers to
exchange information, there must be a pre-existing agreement as to
how the information will be structured and how each side will send
and receive it.

1. DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROTOCOL:

TCP/IP: TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol. TCP/IP is a set of standardized rules that allow computers to
communicate on a network such as the internet.

HOW DOES TCP/IP WORK?

TCP/IP is a two-layered program: the higher layer (TCP) disassembles

message content into small "data packets" that are then transmitted
over the Internet to be re-assembled by the receiving computer's TCP
back into the message's original form. The lower layer (IP) plays the
role of "address manager" and gets each data packet to the correct
destination. IP addresses are checked by every computer in a network
to ensure messages are forwarded as needed.

2. HTTP: It stands for Hypertext transfer protocol. It determines

how different program exchange over the internet. The HTTP is
the standard protocol used by the World Wide Web. It defines
how message are formatted and transmitted and what actions
the web server browsers should take in response to various
commands.
3. HTTPS: It stands for Hypertext transfer protocol secure. While
HTTP is a protocol which allows the fetching of WWW resources,
such as HTML documents. HTTPs used for secure
communication and is widely used on the Internet.
