Assignment Overview

The assignment will enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the theories,
principles and practices of tourism and society. The essay theme is ‘What are the impacts of tourism
development on society in the post-COVID-19 era?’

This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your
achievement of the following module learning outcomes:

LO 1 Understand and explain sociological theories, principles and practices related to tourism and
society.

LO 2 Demonstrate an understanding of key concepts, including of tourism and society and how different
socio-cultural, political, and economic contexts influence principles and practices of sustainability.

LO 4 Demonstrate appropriate academic writing skills, referencing and good academic practice.

Assignment Task and Requirements

Anticipating the impacts of tourism development on society in the post-COVID-19 era

WHAT ARE YOU ASKED TO DO?

Prepare a 2,000-word essay that demonstrates your understanding of the theories, principles and
practices of tourism and society.

This essay requires you to include all the following:

Introduction (300 words)


Introduce the essay topic:
An elaboration of the COVID-19 pandemic and the post-COVID-19 era:

To provide the elaboration, you should


i. provide an overview of the aims of the essay,
ii. outline the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular its impacts on the tourism sector,
iii. comment on the importance to examine the recovery of tourism sector in the post-COVID-19 era.

First core section (400 words)


Comment on impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism:

To comment on the impacts, you should
i. identify impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism,
ii. consolidate research evidence and statistical data to showcase the severity of the impacts,
iii. comment on the overall impacts on tourism development.

Impacts of COVID-19 can be multi-faceted. In addition to decreased incomes, disrupted supply chains
result in many related business difficulties. Tourists’ expectations and psychological states are affected,
too.

Second core section (400 words)


Evaluate post-COVID-19 recoveries in the tourism sector:

To provide the evaluation, you should


i. identify various measures taken to expand / accelerate recoveries in the tourism sector in the post-
COVID-19 era,
ii. consolidate research evidence and statistical data to showcase the current situation in the tourism
sector,
iii. comment on the effectiveness of measures taken.

There are likely to be encouraging evidence to support successes as well as disappointing data to indicate
setbacks. Students are expected to cover both sides.

Third core section (600 words)


Anticipate various impacts of tourism development on society in the post-COVID-19 era, particularly in
relation to tourism sustainability:

To provide the anticipation, you should


i. anticipate the ongoing tourism development in the post-COVID-19 era,
ii. categorise the impacts into economic, socio-cultural, environmental, or political, as well as positive
and negative,
iii. argue the interrelatedness of these impacts, for example, in what ways the impacts are related, or,
how strong the relationship is,
iv. comment on the sustainability and impacts of tourism development on the overall wellbeing of
society.

Relevant theories (e.g., Butler’s (1980) tourism lifecycle, Leiper’s (1979) tourism system, stakeholder
theory, community participation model (Wu, Zhang & Fujiwara, 2013)) can be useful to support your
analysis.

Conclusion (300 words)


Give conclusive remarks:
Consolidate your key findings and give overall conclusive remarks – to what extent will tourism harm the
overall wellbeing of society, or, to what extent will tourism be beneficial to society? Is it urgent to address
these issues now?

To provide the remarks, you should


i. pick several key (NOT all) findings, defend your choice by explaining their importance,
ii. comment and explain your opinions about the sustainability of tourism development and the
interrelationship between tourism and society.
