Content: Resultant and Equilibrium of General force system (3D and 2D). Moment about a point.
Moment about an axis.
1. A body is acted upon by forces below. All the forces are acting from the Origin pt. O. Find
the resultant of these forces.
i. 60 N acting due east
ii. 120 N, 60° North of East
iii. 90 N, 30° West of North
iv. 150 N acting 60°, South of West
v. 110 N acting 20° West of South
vi. 100N acting 80° South of East
3. Determine the magnitude and direction of resultant with reference to point A for the force
system as shown in Figure, if the side of equilateral triangle is 1 m.
4. A boat is moved uniformly along a canal by two ropes pulling with forces P= 890 N and
Q= 1068 N acting under an angle α = 60°. Determine the magnitude of the resultant pull
on the boat and the angles β and γ as shown in the figure. (Ans: R= 1698 N, β= 33°, γ=
27°)
5. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Determine the tension (a) in
cable AC, (b) in cable BC. (Ans: TAC= 6.37 kN, TBC= 12.47 kN)
6. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its direction measured anticlockwise
from the positive x axis.
7. If the mass of cylinder C is 40 kg, determine the mass of cylinder A in order to hold the
assembly in the position shown.
8. Determine the tension in cables AB, BC, and CD, necessary to support the 10 kg and 15
kg traffic lights at B and C, respectively. Also find the angle θ.
9. A trolley is acted upon by two forces as shown in Figure. If θ= 25° and the resultant R of
the two forces is vertical, then determine the magnitude of the force P and resultant R.
10. The 30 kg is supported at A by a system of five cords as shown in Figure. Determine the
force in each cord for equilibrium.
11. An electric-light fixture of weight Q= 178 N is supported as shown in Figure. Determine
the tensile forces S1 and S2 in the wires BA and BC respectively, if their angles of
inclination are as shown. (Ans: S1= 130.3 N, S2= 92.14 N)
12. Determine the resultant of the three forces acting on the dam section shown in Figure an
locate its intersection with the base AB. For a safe design this intersection should be
within the middle third. Is it a safe design?
13. Two identical rollers, each of weight Q= 445 N, are supported by an inclined plane and a
vertical wall as shown in Figure. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the reactions induced at
the points of support A, B, and C. (Ans: RA= 385.4 N, RB= 642.3 N, RC= 513.84 N)
14. Two smooth spheres of weight 100 N and radius 250 mm each are in equilibrium in a
horizontal channel of width 870 mm as shown in Figure. Find the reactions at the surfaces
of contact A, B, C, and D assuming all the surfaces to be smooth.
15. Three spheres A, B, and C weighing 300 N, 600 N and 300 N respectively and having
diameters 800 mm, 1200 mm and 800 mm respectively are place in a trench as shown in
Figure. Determine the reaction develop at contact points P, Q, R and S. The angle of
inclination is 30°.
