Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter generally discusses the research design and methodology

employed in this undertaking. Likewise, the sources of data, sample, instrumentation,

data gathering procedure, and the plan for data analysis that were utilized in this study

are presented.

Research Design

A research design is a strategic framework for action that serves as a bridge

between research questions and the execution or implementation of the research

(Mouton, 2001). This study is designed as a qualitative study, with the goal of reviewing

and understanding the employability skills of Senior High School students needed in the

workplace. Among the qualitative research methods, phenomenology was utilized for its

conduct. Phenomenology focuses on the perspectives, opinions, and human

experiences of several individuals involved in a situation or phenomenon. The

commonalities of a group's lived experiences are the focus of this method.

Given this, the researchers followed a structured design that assisted them in

understanding the subjective perspectives, opinions, and lived experiences of their

chosen participants of the study. The results will be based solely on the data they have

collected from conducting surveys involving their subjects. The information analysis

process will heavily rely on the data collecting method and skills of the researchers, as

well as the articulate skills of their participants.

Sources of Data

There were two (2) types of sources of data used in this undertaking: primary and

secondary. The primary data source was obtained from the survey questionnaire results

conducted with the involvement of the respondents from Grades 11 and 12.

Questionnaires were prepared and administered to the respondents. The researchers

used open and closed questionnaires. The secondary sources, on the other hand, were

books, news articles, and other reading materials found in the library and internet that

were deemed significant and relevant to the scope of the research.

The Sample

The researchers have decided that the respondents to participate in this study

shall be Legazpi City Science High School students from Grades 11 and 12.

Specifically, 50 Senior High School students, regardless of age, gender, civil status, and

social status who were chosen through volunteer sampling.

The Volunteer Sampling procedure was employed in collecting data from the

respondents who were willing to answer the survey questionnaire when asked.

Volunteer sampling involves people who self-select into the survey. The researchers did

not choose specific people to become part of their study. The final sample was selected

from the potential respondents who were willing and qualified to take part in the survey.

This accorded respondents plenty of time to consider whether or not they wanted to

volunteer for survey participation.

Instrumentation
A survey was employed in gathering the essential data needed by the

researchers through a combination of individual questions, processes, and

methodologies. As the study suggested, the researchers fulfilled the need to collect

information from their respondents regarding the initially developed employability skills

through time spent in education, training, and learning.

The researchers used a survey questionnaire formulated through Google Forms,

an online platform powered by Google. It was utilized as a tool for the collection of data

from the participants of the study. Further, before answering each questionnaire, a

message to the respondents explaining the purpose of the study and a series of

questions to gather information from the respondents shall be presented.

Data Collection Procedure

The data gathering process commenced upon the validation and approval of the

questionnaire by the research adviser. In order to proceed with the gathering of data,

questionnaires were administered via a survey on Google Forms and were answered

truthfully by the responders. This survey asked the respondents about how developed

their employability skills are. The most crucial aspects of this questionnaire focused on

their skills essential in a working environment, and how different factors have

contributed to the development of these qualities.

The researchers scheduled the day to hand out the questionnaire link (google

forms) to the respondent and the survey was open for responses for a total of three (3)

days. All the respondents’ answers varied, and are to be measured using a scaling

system. They were asked to rate themselves on a scale of 1 - 5, based on the

statements provided by the researchers. The formulated survey form is divided mainly

into five (5) distinct sections, specifically, the following:

I. Competency and Skill Assessment

a. Communicative Abilities

b. Collaborative Working Abilities

c. Consistency and Reliability

d. Critical-thinking Skills

e. Organization and Self-management

f. Technical Skills

II. Leadership Potential and Qualities

III. Academic Activeness and Participation

IV. Involvement in Inter-school Training Programs and the Like

V. Open-ended Questions

The rating scale consists of the following numerical values that each represent

the respondent’s perspective on their corresponding level of mastery, competency, the

extent of knowledge, and possession of each skill presented:

1 - Strongly Disagree

2 - Disagree

3 - Neutral

4 - Agree

5 - Strongly Agree
After all the needed data were gathered from the responses obtained from each

of the prepared sections, they were then tabulated, analyzed, interpreted, and

discussed using a content analysis approach to achieve the goal of the research.

Plan for Data Analysis

Content Analysis is a qualitative research approach or instrument that is

frequently used to study content and its characteristics. In the context of survey

research, content analysis is a research approach that is used to code verbatim

responses to open-ended questions into a meaningful collection of categories that may

be used for subsequent qualitative statistical analysis.

Since each respondent was given a questionnaire concerning the ability to

strengthen the employability skills of Senior High School Students, the data findings will

be observed. The analysis mainly consists of content that describes the survey's

findings, which were presented in a detailed flow. The answers to open and closed-

ended questions were recorded and combined with the other responses. The

conclusion and recommendations will result from the researchers' interpretation and

understanding of the relevantly obtained details.
