A Speech Analysis
on the Valedictory Address "Lang" by Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo

A term bearing parallels to the word lang, despite our best efforts, it is insufficient. At Far Eastern
University (FEU) in the Philippines, Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo, A, achieved a Bachelor of Secondary
Education (BSED) degree with highest marks, specializing in English. Her aspirational farewell address,
Lang, was given during FEU's 91st commencement exercise in 2019. Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo's
valedictory speech uses public speech context in view of the fact that she delivered the valedictory
speech in front of the audience, and besides that, she also prepared a speech script. We can really say
that the type of speech context that Mariyela used is public speech context. This is like a script that
helps her remember what to say and keep her speech organized. So, because she had a script and spoke
in front of an audience, we can say that her speech was a public speech. It's really clear that Hugo's
speech was a public speech since she gave it to a bunch of people and she planned it out beforehand.

The valedictory speech "Lang?" by Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo is really important reminder that
everyone has a unique values and that pursuing a passions is essential to leading a happy life. Audiences
are greatly moved by this strong message, which also leaves them feeling motivated. The power of
Hugo's speech comes from its capacity to clarify, convince, and, in the end, inspire the audience.
Mariyela's personal experiences are probably the inspiration for her speech as it highlights the
difficulties and victories she faced while pursuing her own dreams. Her journey relates with the crowd
because of her personal experiences, which makes it possible for people to identify with her. Most of
the time the speech talks about overall truths of the human experience, like the value of self-belief, the
strength to follow one's dreams, and the fear of being judged.

Because so many people can relate to these, the message is both important and easily applicable. The
speech is not just a persuasive speech; it is also informative. In order to convince the audience strongly,
the speech probably makes use of strong stories and emotional words. The message is more effective
and powerful when there is an emotional connection because it encourages respect and understanding.
A call to action that tells listeners to take control of their lives and follow their passions despite all
challenges is probably included in the speech's conclusion. People have the power to take control of
their lives and work toward pursuing careers that are important and achievable by this clear call to
action.

When it comes with speech style, Hugo's speech is considered as frozen style and also can be formal
style. It is considered frozen style because the speech is highly structured and rarely deviates from a set
script and besides of that she really didn't move which considered as frozen style. Furthermore,
Valedictory addresses are also formal, often with a more polished and carefully crafted delivery.
However, they can also incorporate personal anecdotes and emotions to make it more engaging.
Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo's "Lang?" speech is an example of a speech that can be considered it
between formality and a certain degree of "frozen" delivery. While valedictory addresses are
traditionally considered formal, Hugo's speech seems to take on a more like a frozen style, characterized
by a highly structured delivery and minimal physical movement. The "frozen" aspect of Hugo's speech is
evident in its adherence to a meticulously crafted script. The speech likely follows a precise structure,
with each point carefully articulated and delivered with a measured cadence. This structured approach,
while contributing to a sense of formality, also creates a sense of rigidity, limiting spontaneous
deviations or improvisational moments. Furthermore, Hugo's lack of physical movement during the
speech reinforces this "frozen" style.

"Lang" is a word that came from someone who didn't see our efforts, someone who had high
expectations for us. Mariyela Hugo stated that lang is a simple term that has the capability to change a
person. Her speech had been inspired by the idea that each college course has its own level of difficulty
and shouldn't be considered as a "lang." Mariyela's speech is intended for all students who have
experienced hearing the word "lang" from others, not simply college students enrolled in the course.

Saying "lang" to a student who's trying it's best to be the greatest of himself/herself can have a negative
impact on them and on us. "Yun lang? Yan lang? Hangang diyan ka lang? What would they expect of us?
Why are they setting high expectations on us? They are not the ones who's exerting efforts but us, so
why are they interfering? This is the real problem. Because education, family values, and societal goals
are strongly rooted in Filipino culture, parents there commonly have high expectations for their children.
This can lead to anxiety and stress, but it is motivated by a desire to secure their children's success and
well-being.

According to a survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), parents often have specific
career aspirations for their children, often choosing professions perceived as stable and financially
rewarding. This can lead to pressure on children to pursue these careers, even if their true passions lie
elsewhere.Furthermore, Her speech addressed the common question she received from others, "Lang?
Teacher ka lang?",This question, which she described as being asked frequently, highlights the societal
bias against teaching, often viewed as a less prestigious career path compared to other professions.

Hugo's speech aimed to counter this perception by emphasizing the importance and value of education
and the crucial role teachers play in shaping society. She likely argued that teaching is not "just" a
profession but a vital one that deserves recognition and respect. Many people found resonance in her
comments, particularly those who thought teaching was an underappreciated profession. It provoked
conversations about the significance of appreciating educators' efforts and confronting cultural
prejudices that frequently minimize their labor.

In conclusion, Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo's speech is a simple yet effective speech for everybody, It's
speech context was a public type of speech which she delivers the message infront of an audience. Her
speech is informative and can also be persuasive that really can change and convince people with her
useful information for the present and future. The way Hugo communicate with the audience is simply
considered as a formal and also frozen speech style because of how she remains unchanged from the
start to end. Futhermore, the word "lang" holds a powerful message about the weight of expectations
on individuals. Mariyela Mari Gonzalez Hugo's speech resonated with many, shedding light on the
impact of dismissing efforts with a simple term and urging recognition of the challenges individuals face.
The pressure to fulfill specific career expectations, as highlighted in the survey by the Philippine
Statistics Authority, can create internal conflict when personal passions diverge from societal norms.
Additionally, Hugo's discussion on the societal bias against teaching emphasized the need to appreciate
the essential role of educators and challenge misconceptions about the teaching profession. Ultimately,
these conversations prompt us to reflect on the influence of cultural expectations on personal goals and
perceptions of success.
