The distribution system is the part of an electric system after the transmission system that is
dedicated to delivering electric energy to an end-user. Electric power distribution is the final stage
in the delivery of electric power; it carries electricity from the transmission system to individual
consumers.
A distribution system originates at a distribution substation and includes the lines, poles,
transformers and other equipment needed to deliver electric power to the customer at the required
voltages. Customers are classed as: Industrial Customer. Commercial Customer. Residential
Customer.

Power companies use step-up transformers at the beginning of transmission lines near power
plants to boost the voltage to hundreds of thousands of volts for transmission across long
distances . Then step-down transformers lower the voltage again for distribution to homes and
businesses.Power distribution systems employ transformers to step up and step down voltages for
several important reasons:
Step-up transformers are designed to increase the voltage of electricity from a lower level to a
higher level. This process is essential in power generation and transmission systems. For instance,
electricity generated at power plants is typically at a lower voltage. To transmit this electricity
efficiently over long distances, step-up transformers increase the voltage, which reduces the
current and minimizes energy loss. By boosting the voltage, these transformers ensure that the
electricity can travel over power lines with minimal loss, making the transmission process more
efficient and cost-effective.
Step-down transformers. It play a vital role in reducing high-voltage electricity to a lower, more
usable voltage. This is necessary for safely powering household appliances, office equipment, and
various electronic devices. When electricity travels through power lines, it is typically at a very
high voltage to minimize energy loss over long distances. However, this high voltage must be
reduced before it reaches residential or commercial buildings. Step-down transformers achieve this
by lowering the voltage to a safer level, ensuring that electrical devices can operate correctly and
safely.

In summary, stepping up and down voltages in power distribution systems is essential for
efficiency, safety, and reliability. By managing voltage levels appropriately, power systems can
deliver electricity effectively from generation sites to consumers.
