Charming Star
Charming Star
Fabric requirements:
40 – 5” Charm Squares assorted dark prints
32 – 5” Charm Squares light background
1/3 yard - Inner border for place mats
1 yard – Outer border for place mats and runner
2 yards – Backing for place mats and runner
STEP 1 – Quarter Square Triangles (QST) Use 16 light & 16 dark 5” charm squares
To make the QST units, first make Half Square Triangle (HST) units. Take a light 5” charm
square and draw a diagonal line on the reverse side from corner to corner. Place the light
fabric right sides together on a dark fabric square and sew ¼” away from each side of the
drawn line. Cut along the drawn line to yield two half square triangles. Open the half square
triangle unit and press seam allowance toward the darker fabric. Trim “dog ears” and square
up blocks to measure 4 5/8” square. Make a total of 32 HST units.
Place one HST on top of another HST so that the seams nest. Draw a diagonal line on the back
of the top HST going the opposite way of the stitched seam. Sew ¼” away from each side of
the drawn line. Cut along the drawn line to yield two quarter square triangles (QST). Open the
units and press seam allowance to one side. Trim “dog ears” if desired. The finished square
should now measure 4 1/4” square. Make a total of 32 QSTs.
STEP 2 – Half Square Triangles (HST) Use 16 light & 16 dark 5” charm squares
Take 16 light and 16 dark 5” charm squares and cut them down to 4 5/8” square. Follow the
previous directions to make 16 HST units that measure 4 ¼”.
STEP 3
Take 8 dark 5” charm squares and cut them down to 4 ¼”
STEP 4
Lay out block as shown below. Stitch into rows, and stitch rows together. Block should
measure 11 ¾”. Make 8 blocks.
Step 5
Place mat inner border – cut 3@2 ½” WOF. Sub-cut to 8@11 ¾”. Stitch onto 2 sides of 4 of the
blocks.
Outer border – cut 8@2 ½” WOF. Sub-cut to 16@15 ¾”. Stitch onto top and bottom, and then
onto sides.
Place mat backing – cut 2@18” WOF. Sub-cut to 18x20”.
Flip Finish: Place backing and top onto batting with right sides together. Pin and stitch around
the edges leaving about a 4” opening. Trim off any extra batting and backing and trim off most
of the seam allowance in the corners. Flip right side out through the opening. Machine or hand
stitch opening closed. Use your hands to press the edges flat. Quilt as desired and steam press.
Border: Cut 4@2 ½” WOF. Stitch onto all 4 sides of runner. Backing: Cut 2@17” WOF and stitch
together into one long piece. Use Flip Finish method as described above. Quilt as desired and
steam press.
