Mobile and Portable Radios
In the ambulance, you will use both mobile and portable radios to
communicate with the dispatcher and/or medical control. An
ambulance will often have more than one mobile radio, each on a

There was a study of ambulance collisions in Philippine settings showed a
shocking rate of non-compliance. As many as 50 percent of those driving
an ambulance failed to wear their seat belts.
Always use emergency lights and sirens in a true emergency and required
by local protocols.
Note: some drivers get hypnotized by a siren and lose the ability to
negotiate with curves and turns, which can worsen the condition of the
patient a siren can also cause panic in other drivers (Never pull behind
another driver and blast the siren).
The siren may not be effective because it is often not heard, insulation in
other vehicles can mask the sound of an approaching siren, as can a loud
radio, conversation, or pelting rain.
To clear traffic quickly, use your vehicle’s horn in conjunction with the
emergency lights and siren.
Turn off your lights and siren as you approach the scene, lights and siren
attract crowds and add to the chaos that may already exist.

In this module, you will have to move the patient several times to provide
transport for the emergency patient. Once you have assessed the patient
and provided emergency care, the patient is generally moved onto a
stretcher. In most cases, you will have to lift and carry the patient to the
stretcher onto the patient compartment. Upon arrival at the hospital. The
patient must be removed from the ambulance, wheeled into the
emergency department (ED), and transferred to the ED bed. To avoid
injury to the patient, yourself, or your team, you need to learn how to lift
and carry patient properly, using proper body mechanics and power grip.

Occasionally injuries occur when proper lifting techniques are used;
however, using proper body mechanics and maintaining physical fitness
greatly reduces the chance of injury.
Moving a patient should be done in an orderly, planned, and unhurried
manner.
This approach will protect you and the patient from further injury and
reduce the risk of worsening the patient’s condition when he or she is
moved. Therefore, practice each technique with your team often so that
when you must move a patient, you can perform the move quickly, safely,
and efficiently. You must also master the skills necessary for the use of all
the equipment and understand the advantages and limitations of each
device before you use it in the field.
Proper body mechanics is the proper and efficient use of your body to
facilitate lifting and moving. These are important steps that Emergency
Medical Responders must follow to lift efficiently and to prevent injury.
When you are ready to lift, follow the rules of proper body mechanics to
minimize the chances of injury to yourself, your co-workers, or the patient.
• Position your feet properly (they should be on a firm, level surface and
positioned a comfortable width apart. Take extra care of the surface is
slippery or unstable. It may be necessary to postpone the move until more
help or equipment is on hand.
• Lift with your legs. (Keep your back straight as possible and bend at
your knees.)
• When lifting with one hand, avoid leaning into opposing side.
• Minimize twisting during a lift
• Keep the weight as close to your body as possible
• When carrying a patient on stairways, use a chair or a commercial stair
chair.
