Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their
communities. It promotes healthy lifestyles, prevents diseases, and prolongs life
across populations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A PHAMACISTS IN PUBLIC HEALTH

1. Role in Disease Prevention and Control


Pharmacists contribute to public health by engaging in disease prevention efforts:
-Promoting vaccinations
-Offering health screening
-Educating on preventive measures
 These efforts align with AHCP’s emphasis on preventive healthcare and
reducing disease burden.
2. Ensuring Medication Safety
Pharmacists play a crucial role in ensuring the safe use of medications:
-Educating patients on proper medication use
-Monitoring for adverse effects
-Collaborating with healthcare providers to optimize treatment plans
 These actions reduce medication errors and promote safe patient outcomes.
3. Involvement in Public Health Programs
Pharmacists support public health initiatives and crisis response such as:
-Participating in vaccination campaigns
-Support pandemic responses, like COVID-19
-Engaging in community health programs
 Their involvement aligns with AHCP’s goal of increasing public health
accessibility.
4. Advocacy for Health Policy
Pharmacists contribute to shaping health policies by:
-Advising on medication safety regulations
-Promoting access to essential medicines
-Participating in policy development boards
 This aligns with AHCP’s mission to ensure healthcare systems are patient-
centered and safe.

Pharmacists are essential to preserving and advancing public health. Participating in


international, national, state, regional, and institutional initiatives to advance public
health and incorporating their objectives into their own practices are obligations
shared by all pharmacists. Additionally, it is the duty of pharmacists to collaborate
with public health planners to guarantee their participation in the formulation of public
health policy as well as the planning, creation, and carrying out public health
initiatives.
