Lab # 5
Title: Photosynthesis (Leaf Structure) Skill:DR
Aim: To draw, label and annotate a monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous leaf.
Material/Apparatus: monocot leaf, dicot leaf, magnifying glass, ruler, pencil, blank sheets
Method
1. Pick a suitable leaf from a monocotyledonous and a dicotyledonous plant
2. Draw its external structure, labeling and annotation key structures
3. Calculate each leaf’s magnification

Lab #: 6

Title: Photosynthesis (Starch Test) Skill: ORR/AI

Aim: To investigate the presence of starch in a green leaf

Material and Apparatus: green leaf, beakers, tongs, tweezers/forceps, hot plate, boiling tubes,
water. White tile, iodine, petri dish, alcohol, dropper

Method
1. A suitable variegated leaf was picked from a Ficus elastica plant.
2. The leaf was rinsed in hot water for 20 seconds and placed in a test tube with alcohol
3. The test tube with the leaf (in alcohol) was placed in a beaker of boiling water for 2-3
minutes.
4. When the leaf appeared colourless, it was removed from the test tube using forceps and
rinsed in water.
5. The leaf was placed in a petri dish and using a dropper, covered in iodine.
6. The petri dish was covered and observed for a minimum of 5 minutes.
7. Changes observed in the leaf’s texture and colour before alcohol and iodine treatment
were recorded in a table.
