Exercise Set 1: Identifying Fragments and Run-Ons

Instructions: Read each sentence below and determine if it is a fragment, a


run-on, or a complete sentence. Write "F" for fragment, "RO" for run-on, and
"C" for complete sentence.

1. Before I could finish my sentence.

2. She went to the store she forgot her shopping list.

3. They started the project last week.

4. Running quickly down the hall.

5. I love reading mysteries they are so exciting.

6. After the meeting ended, everyone went out for lunch.

7. While we were waiting at the bus stop.

8. I enjoy painting my own furniture it allows me to be creative.

Exercise Set 2: Correcting Fragments

Instructions: Each of the following sentences is a fragment. Turn each one


into a complete sentence by adding the missing parts (subject, verb, or
complete thought).

1. Despite the heavy rain.

2. Walking through the dense forest.

3. Because she wanted to improve her grades.

4. Whenever we go on vacation.

5. As soon as the sun rises.

6. Staring at the blank page.

7. After the long and tiring journey.

Exercise Set 3: Correcting Run-On Sentences

Instructions: Each of the following sentences is a run-on. Correct each one


by adding punctuation, conjunctions, or breaking it into two sentences.
1. The sun set we could still see the outline of the mountains.

2. She loves cooking she makes delicious meals every weekend.

3. I lost my keys I have no idea where they could be.

4. It started raining suddenly we all ran for cover.

5. He was tired from working all day he still went to the gym.

6. My friend came over we played video games for hours.

Exercise Set 4: Mixed Practice – Correcting Fragments and Run-Ons

Instructions: Each of the sentences below is either a fragment or a run-on.


Identify which it is and then rewrite it as a complete, correct sentence.

1. While driving home last night.

2. The baby was crying we couldn’t figure out why.

3. We stayed at the beach all day it was so relaxing.

4. If you need help with the project.

5. The flowers in the garden they bloom every spring.

6. Even though he studied all night.

7. Her car wouldn’t start she had to call for help.

8. Enjoying the warm sunshine on the patio.

Exercise Set 5: Writing Practice

Instructions: Write five original sentences, following the specific


instructions below for each sentence type. Then, swap with a partner (or
check yourself) to determine if any of your sentences are fragments, run-ons,
or complete.

1. Write a complete sentence that describes a daily activity.

2. Write a fragment that begins with "Although."

3. Write a run-on sentence about a memorable event.

4. Write a complete sentence that contains a dependent clause.


5. Write a fragment that describes a place.

Additional Exercise: Editing Paragraphs for Fragments and Run-Ons

Instructions: The paragraph below has several fragments and run-ons.


Rewrite the paragraph, correcting all errors.

"Yesterday was a busy day. Starting early in the morning. I had a meeting
with my manager it was very important. I was a little nervous I wanted to
make a good impression. After that I went to lunch with a friend who I
haven’t seen in a long time. It was great catching up. Because we had so
much to talk about. Later, I rushed to my evening class I didn’t want to be
late. Finally got home around 9 PM."
