The plan and elevation view of a multistorey office building

proposed for construction in downtown Hamilton (ON) is
shown in the figures below. Figure 1 sows the slab layout with
a grid of 0.25×0.45 m reinforced concrete columns supporting
a 0.2 m thick reinforced concrete slab. The slab has an
opening in the middle as shown. Figure 2 show the elevation
view of the building where a tile roofing has been used and
the roof extends one meter in all four sides beyond the
plan view shown in Figure 1. If the concrete used in the
columns and the slabs has a unit weight of 25 kN/m3,
determine the following:
(i) The total dead load on footings A1, A2, B2, and C4.
(ii) The total live load on footings A1, A2, B2, and C4.
(iii) The snow load intensity on the roof.

The total dead load (excluding roof load) on footings A1, A2, B2, and C4.
• Slab thickness: 0.2 m
• Columns: 0.25×0.45 m
• Concrete unit weight: 25 kN/m3

4m 4 Slabs: 4 x (0.2m x 3m x 4m x 25 kN/m3) = 240 kN

3m
Column 1st Floor: (0.25 m x 0.45 m x 4.25 m) x 25 kN/m3= 11.95 kN

Columns Upper 3 Floors: 3x(0.25 m x 0.45 m x 3.65 m) x 25 kN/m3 = 30.80 kN

➢ Total dead load: 282.75 kN

The total live load on footings A1, A2, B2, and C4.

3m Assume 1.0 kPa applied on the plan projection of the roof

1st Floor: (3m x 4m) x 4.8 kN/m2= 57.6 kN

Upper 2 Floors: 2 x (3m x 4m) x 2.4 kN/m2= 57.6 kN

Roof: (3m x 4m) x 1.00 kN/m2= 12 kN

Total Live Load= 127.2 kN

Assume 1.0 kPa applied on the plan projection of the roof

Since the only variable is the tributary area (which has doubled compared to
column A1) → Total load live load on column A2 = 2*Total live load on column A1

The snow load intensity on the roof.

Loads to be considered: Snow load
S = I s Ss (C b C w C s C a ) + S r 
▪ Office building (norml); Ultimate Limit State (ULS). So, from Table 4.1.6.2-A, Is is
equal to 1.00.

Loads to be considered: Snow load
Ground Snow Load (Ss) and Associated Rain Load (Sr) S = I S (C C C C ) + S 
s s b w s a r

Ss, and associated rain load and Sr values are tabulated

in Appendix C, Division B of NBCC 2015 depending on
location and province.

Using the provided Snow Load Calculator Snow Load calculator

For Hamilton (ON), Ss = 1.1 KPa and Sr= 0.4 kPa

Snow load
The wind exposure factor, Cw S = I s Ss (C b C w C s C a ) + S r 
Cw is the wind exposure factor [NBCC 2010 Cl.4.1.6.2 (3) and (4)].

Therefore, Cw= 1.0

Loads to be considered: Snow load
The basic roof load factor, Cb S = I s Ss (C b C w C s C a ) + S r 

Snow load

The characteristic length lc = 2w-(w2/l) S = I s Ss (C b C w C s C a ) + S r 

lc = 2w-w2/l = 2 ×20 – (202/26) = 24.6 4m

= 70/1.0 = 70 15.2 m
