LESSON 15: Filipino Cultural Heritage
Description of the Lesson:

In this lesson, you will learn about the Filipino Cultural Heritage.
We are one of the richest country in the world in terms history that
is why we have many cultural heritage that the tourist wanted to
visit.
Are you ready to learn? I know you are excited!

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. define the word heritage;
2. understand the different dimension of heritage; and
3. discuss the benefits of Cultural Conservation.

Lesson Content (What’s New)


Direction: Kindly read the text critically and carefully. You need to take
down notes in your notebook the words that you find important in order
to have deeper understanding.
I. Defining Heritage

● Heritage is defined with different shades and meanings.

● According to Christopher Tunnard, heritage is the cultivation of cultural


patrimony.
● Heritage can also state the property, which parents handed down their
progeny and can also refer to an intellectual or spiritual legacy it is
according to Graeme Davidson.

● It considered also that monuments and sites that embody the cultural,
political, economic, and social history of the community.
● According to Liu Yuan, it is as much about people as it is about relics, and
the challenges to balance preservation with modern day realities.
● According to World Heritage Commission, UNESCO, heritage is our
legacy from the past what we live with today, and what we pass on to
future generations.

In the Philippines has a World Heritage Sites that recognized by the UNESCO and
that is listed below.
1. Historic Town of Vigan (1999)
2. Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras (1995)
3. Baroque Churches of the Philippines (1993)
4. Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park (1999)
5. Tubbataha Reef Marine Park (1993)

II. Dimension of Heritage


There are two dimension of heritage: Intangible and Tangible Heritage
1. Intangible Heritage
Intangible heritage can be classified as traditions, customs, values, trade and skill
therefore it is culture.
Examples of Intangible Heritage:
● Saying “Po” and “Opo”

● Fiesta or Festival like Singkaban in Bulacan, Salubong Festival in Plaridel


, Carabao Festival in Pulilan.
● Way of bless for us to respect superior or elder than us.

● Saying of “Salamat Po”

● The unique way of giving saying hi and hello of Filipino today the “Bating
Filipino”
Abovementioned are some unique cultural intangible heritage by the Filipinos.
2. Tangible Heritage
Tangible heritage can be classified as natural heritage such as environment, flora
and fauna.
Man-made things or built are also considered as tangible heritage.
Examples of Tangible Heritage
● “Baleti” oldest tree alive in Canlaon City

● Flora: Waling-Waling, Sampaguita, Ilang-ilang and Mariposa Orchids

● Marbles in Romblon Island

● Philippine Eagle

● Carabao/Tamaraw
Abovementioned are different kinds of Tangible Heritage.

III. Benefits of Cultural Conservation


● The importance of conservation and heritage reservation proves its value
in the affirmation of uniqueness of a place.
● When cultural heritage is appreciated enhanced different aspect in the
government especially economic gains.
● It enhances the quality of life.

● Serves as examples of quality for today

● It is irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration

● It is strengthening of the sense of national, regional, and local identity.

Remember that the cultural heritage plays a very important role in our life. It is what
keeps us attached to our religion, traditions, & beliefs. In today’s context we refer to
cultural identity which means (feeling of) identity of a group or culture, or of an
individual as far as he or she is influenced by his belonging to a group or culture.
