Heyyyyyy, long time no seee. Welcome back IELTS EZ. I really look forward to doing the test
with you! Where have you been?
Thank you! I had some personal business to attend to. The thing is, your test is bloody expensive.
How can I afford to do the test every god damn week. You guys are really greedy arent you. Now
stop wasting my time and start the bloody test already.
Fuck you bitch, I’m the examiner, yo ass is mine yo. Now let’s do dis I’ll skip the introduction
questions cos I hate that part Let’s talk about sunny days Do you like sunny days?
No I’m afraid not. Partly because the sun is really intense in my country. You see, Vietnam is a
tropical country so it often gets scorching hot when the sun is out. And I often sweat like a pig when I
have to go out or something and expose myself out in the open. So yeah, definitely not a big fan of
that.
Well you look like a pig already with that big fat face. Do you prefer cloudy days or sunny
days?
As I told you already It’s really uncomfortable for me when I get sweaty so I would definitely say
cloudy days are better. Of course I wouldn’t like it if it gets too gloomy cos it really makes me feel
blue and stuff. But I love the feeling when it’s a bit shady and when there’s some cool breeze so I can
get out of the house and do some outdoor activities.
Would you like to go, as a tourist, to a place that has little sunshine?
Well normally I’d say I hate the sun. but when it comes to traveling then I must say im a big fan of
gorgeous tropical beaches like Bali or Maldives. And those places apparently have lots of sunshine so
I guess I’d have to go with it if I were to travel to those places. So well, there you go.
No, not really. I could never understand why flowers are such a big thing you know. I wouldn’t say
that I hate flowers either cos there’s not much to hate about flowers. It’s a good thing to have in your
house as a decoration or a gift to your loved ones. So I guess I would say I’m pretty much indifferent
about it.
Well, There are quite a few occasions in a year when flowers are sent to express affection. I mean
there’s Valentines day. Although Vietnam is an Asian country and also a Buddist country, we seem to
have picked up this concept pretty quickly. I mean Valentine’s day is the day the florists can earn a
fortune. And then there’s women’s day. It’s a big thing in Vietnam. We send flowers to express our
respect towards women, which I think is a joke in a male-dominated society like this, but we still do
so nonetheless. Yeah I think those are the 2 typical examples.
1
Do people in your country love gardening?
Well, I can’t say for sure, not everybody in Vietnam has a green thumb you know. And the thing is
most Vietnamese never have a chance to own a garden. As you can see we are packed like sardines in
the city. So, from what I can see I guess that those who like gardening must be in the minority.
Ok then, let me ask you things related to being patient Is it important to be patient?
Be a patient? Uhm… what an absurd question. I guess yes, It might be profitable for hospitals and
healthcare providers uh...
No it’s not that patient you fuck tard. Is it important to have patience?
Back to the question I think patience is quite a necessary quality for a person to have. Good things
come to those who wait you know. I mean not everything can be done immediately. If you have the
ability to wait for a considerable amount of time, maybe you can avoid negative feelings and anger
issue perhaps, all of which will worsen your health. And more importantly rushing things does not
always guarantee success either, so I suppose patience is a good virtue.
Is it easy to be patient?
No probably not, I mean certainly not. I must admit I’m quite an impatient guy who always always
wants things to be done immediately. And I guess being patient requires lots of brain power to calm
yourself down. So I reckon it is quite a challenging thing to do, at least for me.
What do you do when waiting for the bus or waiting for other stuff?
Ah, I have quite a bad habit of fidgeting whenever I have to wait for something or someone. I can
never ever stand still or do nothing with my hands and legs. I often walk back and forth, I pace in
circle all the time. Oh yes and I often talk to myself. As I told you I’m not a patient person, I do all
those things to distract myself and make myself forget that I’m waiting and actually wasting my time
doing nothing.
Alrighty then, Let’s talk about drawings and paintings How often do you visit art galleries?
Well, let me remember, ahhh almost never. I can hardly remember the last time I paid a visit to any
art galleries or even museums. I’m actually not an art person. I can never understand why drawings
and paintings and other so called masterpieces can be so valuable and appreciated.
Uhm… well, as I’ve told you just now I have a really bad habit when I have to wait for something or
have nothing to do which is fidgeting. I also like do doodle. I mean I pretty much draw meaningless
2
stuff like cats or dogs or big piles of poop just to kill time. Nope, on second thought, I think those are
my art masterpieces that only the future generations can appreciate. I actually have a huge drawing of
a pile of dog poo, carefully framed and hanged on the wall of my living room. I’ll probably auction
the thing when I get old.
Alright alright, enough already with your obsession with shit. Let’s go to part two I want you to
describe a person who you just met and want to know more about.
I’d like to talk about an intriguing person I bumped into quite a few days ago. In fact he’s quite a
peculiar fellow. Well, normally when I get up I always have the habit of having a cup of coffee to
jumpstart my day. And last Thursday when I was enjoying a cup of near my house, I saw a guy sitting
next to me reading newspaper and I was totally shocked. I mean the moment I saw him, I
immediately felt a sense of familiarity. He looks really really similar to a childhood friend of mine
who died ten years ago in a tragic accident. It was quite creepy to be in that situation. I was terrified
at that moment and thought I would shit a brick. I decided to break the ice and talk to him and see
whether he’s actually a reincarnation of my dead friend. I’m quite superstitious you know and believe
in those things about after life and stuff. It turned out he’s my nextdoor neighbour who has lived next
to me for exactly ten years. He moved in the day my friend passed away. Now the reason why I
recognised him right the moment I saw him is because, well, my friend, my dead friend, had a face
only a mother could love. And this character is actually not much of a difference. I mean when the
guy came into the coffee shop, all the girls just stood up and left in a really quick manner. And that is
exactly what happened when my good old, dead friend walked into a coffee shop. And then after just
a quick conversation the guy said he had some business to attend to and had to leave. Even when I got
home, I still couldn’t believe what just happened and suddenly realised that I had to change my
trousers. I wish I could have had more time with this shadowy and incredible character that I had just
met. I would have had the chance to figure out whether he is what I suspect him to be. What a pity
My name is IELTS EZ
Well, as the name of the job suggests, my job is to, basically, keep the toilet clean after each and
every use. Apart from that I need to enhance customer’s experience by standing there and singing
songs when people do their business. It’s to brighten their day and give them a totally new
experience.
Is your work the same as what you imagined it would be before you started it?
3
Well for most part yes but definitely not the singing part. I never thought toilet cleaning would entail
such challenging tasks. You know, it’s toilet cleaning, not toilet SINGING for god sake. But uh that’s
also what I love about my job and my centre, being challenging and innovative and all
I wouldn’t say popular but I would certainly say common cos’ you know there’s a high demand for
the job. Every single business must have some sort of toilet facility you know. And they need proper
cleaning, sanitising and stuff that’s the part where people with expertise like me come in
As I just told you it’s mainly the singing part that’s really difficult. I’m not particularly good at
singing. But the cleaning part is relatively easy. It’s like cleaning your own toilet at home, just more
frequently. So, yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s a difficult job
Not really, at first I applied for a teaching role. Cos you know, I’m good at English, obviously. But I
just don’t know why they wouldn’t let me teach. Instead, they wanted me to take care of their toilet. I
had no other choice but to go with it…. I still wanna teach English you know. Maybe I can stop
singing songs and give them English lessons while they use the toilet. Ah hah, that might be a good
idea.
Sure I do, I think it’s something everybody should know. My father taught me how to do that when I
was 5 years old. I’m really good at that.
I don’t know. It may be more convenient than cars because our streets are really narrow and super
crowded. You can navigate much better using smaller vehicles. But you know it’s much less
convenient compared to motorbike because it is much much slower. You can’t travel around the city
with bicycles, it takes too much time whereas you can do that easily with a motorbike
Would you say it’s safe for children to ride bicycle in your hometown?
Ooh, certainly not. As you can probably see, our streets are full of crazy motorbikes, or should I say
scooters or mopeds and you have to share the lane with those crazy scooters as well as big cars or
trucks. They are really fast, and can pose a big, sometimes fatal threat if you are not careful. So
children should never ever ride bicycles on the streets of Hanoi without parents’ supervision or
protective gears.
Do you think children should be taught how to ride bicycle at school as extra curriculum
subject?
4
I reckon they should. Definitely. To me riding bicycle is much like an exercise. It’s health benefits
are totally undeniable. And if children know how to ride bicycles they can be independent from their
parents in a certain way because they can travel to many parts of the city whenever they want
What are the benefits of riding bicycles? As I said just now, you can think of riding bicycles as
doing physical exercise. It’s good for health in general. It improves our stamina and muscle capacity.
Another thing is that it is a relatively convenient way of getting around the city but again it’s not very
convenient cos it’s really slow and tiring sometimes.
718. An Old Thing in Your Family Describe an antique or some other old thing that your
family has kept for a long time. You should say: what it is how (or when) your family first got
this thing how long your family has kept it and explain why this thing is important to your
family.
I live in a reeaaaly big family of 6 and sometimes 7 people, so we have soo many things in possession
that I can use to describe. But I believe I’ll choose the fire extinguisher that’s been kept untouched,
unused in my house’s attic for god knows how many years. I think it’s been there, well, since the
dawn of time. My dad was terrified of any disaster that could happen and destroy our family. So he
did a number of things to prevent that risk, especially, against house fire. He immediately bought a
number fire extinguishers and put them in every corner of the house and taught each and every
member of our family to use them in the case of fire. He also went so far as to move our kitchen to
the 5th floor so that even if any fire breaks out from the kitchen, it wouldn’t affect the whole house
and kill the family. As a child I’ve had so many good old memories with the fire extinguisher, I used
to hit my sisters with it when I was angry, cos I have anger issue sometimes. But luckily they grew up
just fine and are very smart. And when I watched Harry potter and saw people using the flying
broomstick, I used to pretend that the fire extinguisher was the flying broomstick and used it to fly
around the house until my dad went crazy about me. My sisters and I really love this fire extinguisher
not because it can put off fire and protect our family, but ironically because we sprayed it on each
other’s face and had so much fun while doing that.
What sorts of things do people in your country like to keep for a long time?
I don’t know, things related to a good memory I guess. Because whenever they see those things
again, they remind them of that particular memory that they want to keep and relive. And apart from
that….people would certainly keep valuable stuff I guess. Those are the only things off the top of my
head.
In general, which do you think are better, old things or new things?
I must admit that I’m a retrospective person so I like to look back and enjoy what I did in the past. I
often don’t care much about the present. And you know, I can’t remember exactly this old saying but
it is something like “history would repeat itself”…. Yeah ….something along those lines… So I think
it’s better to have a profound understanding of the past so that we can avoid our mistakes and have a
better future.
5
Do you think young people and older people keep the same sorts of things?
Wow, it’s a deep question you’re asking me but yeah I couldn’t think of any other reasons why they
would keep different things. Cos as I told you regardless of the gender the age, or even nationality,
people would keep things that remind them of the good things in their past.
Do you think it's important to recall the past (or, to not forget history)?
Yes, as I’ve just mentioned previously. Your future is built on your present and the present is also
built on your past. It’s a continuous path here. So you should certainly need to remember what you
did wrong in the past so as to avoid repeating the same mistake twice. Or you should know well what
you did right in order to continue doing the good thing to have a better future. I think that’s the very
reason why we have history lessons to teach our children about the mistakes as well as the victories in
the past and to help them build a better future. Do you think there should be more museums?
Sure, I reckon that museums are there to remind us of the past and to make sure that our generation
understand more about the sacrifice that our forefathers went through. So we definitely need more
museums. The only thing is the museums in Vietnam are TOO DAMN BORING. I suggest they
should make use of virtual reality technology to enhance our experience and make it more realistic
and captivating to the visitors. Otherwise it would be for nothing.
How do you think museums in the future will be different to those of today?
I’m not sure about Vietnam though cos we’re quite slow in catching up with the world in terms of
technology. But yeah, there will certainly be changes in museums around the world. You know
recently there’s a thing called virtual reality, or augmented reality if you get what I mean. You can
experience the whole past with the help of a pair of goggle and it would look so realistic you would
be immersed in the world of the past. I think museums of the future would make use of those
futuristic technology to enhance our experience of the past. That’s for sure.
Yeah, I love dancing. In fact I can do popping and also some shuffling. Every day I’m shuffling you
know.
Yes I have, as I just told you I know how to dance and I learned how to do certain dance moves
myself. I went onto youtube, watch my idols and then imitate them step by step.
6
Well I think that really depends…. Youngsters in my country really love hiphop dance. You know
hiphop dance right? Popping, break dancing and stuff. But it seems like the elderly prefer traditional
dance such as hat dance where people dance with their Vietnamese conical hat.
For traditional dance I think they only do it in special occasions such as celebration and stuff but with
hiphop dance I think you can see it everyday cos it’s really popular. If you go to places like Lenin
park or certain playground, you can definitely see young boys and girls practising hiphop dance there
Yes, in most traditional festivals, we always always have one particular part for traditional dance
performance such as Hat dance or Scarf dance.
Do you think there are any benefits for young people to go dancing?
I think it has countless benefits in terms of physical health. You know dancing means lots of moves,
and you kinda sweat like a pig when you dance, so, I reckon that it’s one of the best ways to keep fit.
Another thing is that an impressive dance also means a creative one so it is definitely a way to
express as well as improve people’s creativity.
Yeah, places like Hanoi are really polluted these days. I can never enjoy my time that I spend outside
of my house. The only place that I can do that is in a green park. I can do so many things inside parks,
relaxing, exercising, you can dance their as well. So yeah. I kinda like parks
Are there many parks or public gardens near where you live?
Not that I know of, there’s only one particularly big and well-known park in HN that I know of which
is Thong Nhat park. I live right next to it. Other than that I don’t know if there’s any other park worth
visiting
Sure, I’m certain that they do. Especially when the environment is so damn polluted right now. every
one needs some sort fresh air to breath and some peaceful, tranquil place to relax.
In the past yes, I used to be a frequent visitor of Thong Nhat park. at that time I was learning how to
dance and there were many hiphop teams and activities around Thong Nhat park. There was also a
Parkour group which I was really into as well. Now I’m just too busy with my job that I can’t find
time to go to any park.
Did you go to parks when you were a child more often than you do now?
7
Yeah I think so, I am a grown-up now with so many responsibilities. Job, girlfriends, family, rent, so
on so forth, so, no more time for park you know. When I was small my dad always took me there for
bike rides and exercise. good old time.
I have always been good at English. I couldn’t remember how I started learning English but I can
remember very clearly how I first used English to communicate when I went abroad. It was in 2005
so It was roughly 10 years ago now. My family had a trip, I think, a 3 or 4day trip to Malaysia-
Singapore and it was a fabulous trip. I was only 8-9 years old at that time and I was super excited
about my first time abroad.
You know, Both singapre and malaysia are countries that can speak English fairly well so in many
parts of the trip, I saw the local people talking to each other in English. And I was wondering if there
could be any chance that I could use my English to chat with them to practise what I have learned and
also to show my parents that I’m good at it.
The chance finally came, when the whole group got to a shopping mall and the tour guide had to go
some where else to take care of some unfortunate business, diarrhea I think. Hee left us stranded, on
our own, trying very hard to buy digital cameras. Most people in our group didn’t know any English
so it was really funny & ridiculous seeing them talking both in Vietnamese and broken English, you
you me me no no come on come on and I was laughing all the time.
Then came the moment of realisation and I realised that I could use my simple, textbook English to
help them communicate. You know what, I did just that, just simple translation, interpretation, this
and that try this try that, want this want that. And it just worked, perfectly.
The group got the cameras they wanted and my parents also got what they always wanted as well, a
good camera, and a perfect son who can speak good English . Not just that, after selling many
cameras to many people, the owner of the shop was really thankful to me and he offered me a
CANON backpack bag that I used for school later on.
It was such a nice experience for me that I can never forget about it. If I could turn back time, that
would be one of the first memories that I would love to relive.
Besides English, what other foreign languages do some people in your country study?
8
I reckon Vietnamese people do study many other languages other than English. And I believe those
languages are Chinese, Japanese and especially Korean.
Sure, I guess there are two main reasons why people do that. The first reason is related to either
business or study. You know people might go abroad to start a business there or maybe the foreign
people may go to our country to start a business here. And then people might go abroad to study, now
that happens a lot in my country. Many students have to go abroad to work and study. So the first
thing they do is to learn the language of their destination, where they go to. The second reason, which
I think is also reasonable, is that many youngsters fall in love with the foreign country’s culture or
language and they decide to learn the language voluntarily. For example many young girls I know
love Korean movies and they decide to learn Korean for no particular reason whatsoever. They do it
just to understand what their oppa say.
Do you think it's really useful (or, important) to study a foreign language?
I think it is a must to study a second, or a third language nowadays. The world has become smaller
than ever. It’s like a village now, really easy to travel to another part of the world and stay there
forever. If you know another language other than your own I think it would be a plus in your CV at
least , or your life. It makes your life easier and open more doors.
Which do you think is more important, learning to speak a language or learning to write it?
I think it really depends on the situation. I mean If you go abroad and study or work in an office, then
it is a must that you know how to read or write. Because you’ll need to use written communication
sooner or later. But if you travel abroad for leisure purposes or you go there just to work as a cleaner
or some blue-collar jobs then it might be more practical to be good at speaking rather than writing.
What age do you think is best for a person to begin to learn a new language?
I think as soon as possible. You know, the younger we are, the better and quicker we learn. I
experience this myself. In the past I was able to switch from American to British accent in only 4
months. But after years of speaking with only one accent and after reaching adulthood, I find it
extremely hard to switch back to American accent. You see, it’s just a real life example sitting in
front of you to show you the point that it’s better to learn things when you’re a child
How do you think teachers could make language classes at school more successful (or, more
interesting)?
I think teachers should put themselves in the position of their students. Like walk a mile in their shoes
before the teaching. This is to make sure that teachers understand what students need before throwing
unnecessary, boring information at the students, especially when the students are in secondary school.
During that time, their brain need constant stimulation to find lessons worth studying. So maybe,
more games, more fun facts, to name but a few.
9
Are there many museums in your hometown?
Well, I’m not interested in museums so I don’t really know about this. But I’m quite sure there
must be one or two museums in my hometown, they’re everywhere you know.
Do you often visit museums?
As I’ve just told you I’m not particularly interested in museums. So far I’ve only visited one of
them which was a science museum in Hanoi. It was kinda awesome.
What kind of museums do you like best?
If I have to choose one then it ‘ll be science museum. I love to see how things are made, their
mechanism and the development of machines, computers and stuff like that.
Do you prefer to visit museums or art galleries?
I’m not really an art person so I’d say museums. Art galleries are the last places I want to visit.
At least museums help me understand more about the past and have fun facts that I can use to
impress the girls.
Do you like to watch films?
Yeah, sure. I’m a big fan of action movies, The avengers, spiderman, antman, stupidman you
name it. I’m also a huge fan of action movies where there are only 2 actors.
Which one do you prefer, Vn films or foreign films?
I’d go with foreign films. I love the fact that foreign actors are so talented. Their performance is
much better compared to our dull and tasteless actors’.
Do Vietnamese ppl like to go to a cinema to watch films?
hmmm I would say yes because if you go to vincom city tower during the weekend you can see
thousands and thousands of young people there and I think it is quite reasonable. I would also
go to the cinema to watch movies rather than at home. better sound system, better atmosphere
and so on.
Describe an educational trip you went on.
You should say:
Where it happened
Who you went there with
What you did at this place and
Explain how you feel
Talking about an educational trip, I think I’m gonna tell you about the trip to the science
museum that I told you just now because I think that it was the only educational thing I’ve
received from my school so far. It was about 6-7 years ago when I was still in secondary
school. I’m not sure if you know about this but the education system in Vn is really bad
because it only focuses on theory but not application. So, I was so thankful for that trip because
10
it truly encouraged students like me to learn about the world around us. The museum is located
not too far away. if I remember correctly we arrived at the site in the morning and stayed there
until the afternoon so it was a total of 6 hours. About the museum, I think it is one of the largest
ones in Hanoi. It is a complex that is made up of 5 or 6 buildings and each one displays
different stuff. I remember there was a Physics building, a Maths building, a Chemistry one and
yeah, another building for Biology. I was totally amazed by all of them to be honest. I was
particularly interested in a very old telephone, kinda ancient technology really. It was a rotary
dial telephone and I was surprised by how such simple and ancient piece of technology could
send out information over vast distance. They also displayed how technology evolved from
very basic pieces of equipment to the modern smartphones and other state-of-the-art devices
that we have today. After that trip, I was so inspired by science that I have become a nerd and
studied like crazy since then
What’s the role of the teacher in educational trip?
I think teachers are there mainly to accompany students and supervise them and take control of
the situation if anything goes wrong. That is exactly what the teachers did during my trip to the
science museum. and you know trips are mostly for young students so there can be many
potential problems like students wandering around and getting lost.
Why do some parents want their kids to receive education at home?
I don’t really know. maybe some of them are over-protective when it comes to the safety and
well-being of their little children. There are bullies and all sort of dangerous stuff going on in
school you know. Other than that I think some parents may feel that the education system does
not suffice and think that it’s better for their children to study at home under their supervision.
Do you think home schooling will be popular in the future?
Not in my country I suppose. Vietnamese people are not really good at educating children. We
do that wrongly all the time and I think it’s best to leave formal education to schools and
qualified teachers.
What do you think are the problems that students are facing when they graduate?
Well, as I told you the system is extremely theoretical and has no real application whatsoever.
All the fresh graduates that I know have no work experience at all. It makes it difficult for
employers because they need to provide the students with full training. My parents run a small
business and to be honest they find this lack of experience of students very disturbing.
Can the employers do anything about this to improve the situation?
I think they can at least cooperate with schools and universities to provide students with, say,
internship and early training to solve this problem. They can run websites that educate students
about what to do and how to equip themselves with more knowledge and lessons about their
future career.
What is your name?
My name is IELTS Ez
Do you like traveling?
11
Oh I love traveling. In fact I’m kinda obsessed with going to different places, seeing new things
and meeting new people.
In which season do you prefer to travel?
I actually don’t have any preference about which season is better, and in my opinion each
season has its unique beauty. And , it really depends on the destination that I’m traveling to as
well. Some might be more gorgeous in a specific time of the year and some might not.
Would you say your country is a good place for tourists to visit?
I suppose Vietnam is quite an attractive destination, I mean, we have quite a number of
excellent tourist attractions across the country. We have a long coastline with lovely coastal
towns and sandy beaches, we also have extensive and extraordinary cave systems that await
explorers around the world to visit. And of course our large and vibrant cities like Hanoi and
Ho Chi Minh city are packed with fun activities to try and interesting things to see. So yes I
would say Vietnam is a pretty decent tourist destination.
What do you do to relax?
There are many different things I could do to relax, from reading to playing computer games.
But oddly enough the thing I find most relaxing and I always do during weekends is motorbike
racing, illegal motorbike racing of course. I often organise large-scale street races at weekends
to both relax and raise money for local charity.
What did you do to relax when you were a child?
I used to stay at home and read tons of books. I was a bookworm at that time and knowledge
was the only thing that eased my mind. But now I’m kinda embarassed everytime I think about
my childhood regretting all the thrilling activities that I could have done to relax instead.
Do you like parties?
Yeah, I’m famous for being a party animal. I remember the time when I got admitted to the
university, I was soo happy and excited that I partied all week long with all of my friends and
relatives.
Is there any kind of party that you would not like to go to?
Off the top of my head no. I can’t think of any party that I don’t want to go to. To me, they are
just irresistible.
Who do you think like parties more, young people or old people?
Well in my experience everybody likes to party equally but they just party in different ways.
Old people’s parties are more like meetings or gatherings and much less intense compared to
the vibrant and noisy parties of youngsters. And I think we all love to party because we love
gathering and seeing the others and of course having social interactions.
Describe a time that a child did something that made you laugh
You should say:
When this happened
12
Who the child was
What the child did and
Explain why it was funny
I have gone through various fun and happy moments in my life and quite often they make me
smile and enjoy life a lot more. But there was this one occasion when I felt sooo happy and
hilarious at the same time that I could not help but laugh like an insane person for nearly half an
hour. That was when my niece spoke her first few words during our family visit about 2 – 3
years ago in Vietnam. Well, the story is like this: during my holiday in Vietnam, our family
decided to pay a visit to my sister and her daughter. We went to her house which was not too
far away from ours and had a lovely dinner there. After the dinner, we gathered around the
baby and played with her for about fifteen minutes or so. And my niece was about 1 year old so
we were expecting her to speak her first words and of course we all tried really really hard to
teach her how to pronounce simple words like mom or dad. We tried so many times but she
wasn’t concentrating on us. So my sister was like: “hey darling, say mama, say mama darling,
say mama you cute little baby”. But the baby just didn’t say anything and focused on her toy
instead. And then after about 10 minutes of trying and failing, my sister was so angry and
impatient that she shouted out loud: “SAY MAMA YOU STUPID BASTARD”. And all of a
sudden, the baby was startled by my sister’s yelling, she turned to my sister and yelled back at
her: “you stupid bastard”. And that was the moment all of us burst out laughing hysterically for
more than 20 minutes. We couldn’t even stop to wipe our tears. We felt so happy that our niece
could finally speak out her first words. But we also felt so hilarious that her first three words
were “you stupid bastard” and to be honest that was the best family moment that I have ever
had in my life Why do some adults miss their childhood?
I think people will have many personal reasons why they miss the time when they were small.
But I think one of the most obvious reasons is that childhood is the time when a person is pure
and innocent and does not have to worry about life and all of its complications. It is arguably
the happiest and most joyful period of time for most of us. Another reason might be that some
of us, during our childhood, might have a chance to see the elderly family members and
relatives especially grandparents before they pass away. So yeah I think those are two most
obvious reasons why some people miss their childhood
Why do children feel happy easily?
Most children are taken care of by their parents so I think they would more or less live in a
care-free environment. By that I mean they do not have to worry about earning money and
having to work hard or having responsibilities and duties so on and so forth. I suppose that’s
the reason why it is easier for children to feel happy
In general, do children in Vietnam enjoy their childhoods?
It really depends on which generation we are talking about. And I mean it because the answer
would vary according to different generation. I wouldn’t think the childhood of my parents was
enjoyable because they grew up in the middle of the war and had so many things to worry
about. They also had to work really hard, I mean physically, to find food, otherwise they would
starve to death. But then the childhood of my generation is quite relaxed, we were born in the
right time, we didn’t have to worry a bit about bombs and guns and we were under no financial
pressure either. I think our childhood is the most enjoyable compared to the others’. And if we
13
are talking about the current generation, I wouldn’t be confident that they are having fun and
enjoying their lives. It is simply because their parents have great expectations about their
academic achievements and they are forced to study really really hard and have no time to
relax. It’s just really stressful for them. So again I couldn’t give you a general answer to the
question but we need to be more specific about the details of which generation we’re talking
about
What’s the best stage in one’s life in your opinion?
I would confidently say that the best time in our life is when we are still students. I mean we
have so many fun things to do during this stage, we have thousands of opportunities to make
new friends and establish connections and learn what we’d love to know and we are still under
great protection of our parents. This stage also has an excellent balance between responsibility
and enjoyment. I mean compared to adulthood in which it is all about being on your own,
taking care of yourself and having burden put on your shoulder, compared to that, childhood
and teenagehood are so much better in various aspects that I do not have enough time to
explain. But yeah, to be honest, If I had a choice, I would choose to never grow up and stay
young and playful and foolish forever.
What is your full name?
My name is IELTS EZ.
Where are you from?
I come from Lạng Sơn city (which is 3 hours drive away from HN).
Do you work or study?
I am a freelancer at the moment. I work for various companies from all corners of Vietnam and
I’m able to do so thanks to the internet.
What's the weather like in your hometown?
My hometown is situated in a mountainous area so it is cold all year round. It gets as cold as 5
degrees celcius during the winter and our summer is relatively warm, around 25 degrees.
Would you say the weather in your hometown is generally good, or bad weather?
I would say it is very undesirable for me. I’m not really fond of the cold weather and I get
sorethroat very frequently when it’s windy.
Do you often talk about the weather with your friends?
I never talk about weather with my friends unless we run out of topics to talk about, which we
don’t. And I also think chatting about weather is extremely boring.
What clothes do you usually wear?
I normally wear light and comfortable clothes. And I’m very proud of my well-buit body so I
often wear slim fit t-shirts or tank tops to show off my muscles.
Do you think you will change your preferences in clothes in the future?
14
Yeah, certainly. People’s taste in fashion changes all the time and I will need to adapt to that to
appear trendy.
Do you spend a lot of money on clothes?
I would say that I spend a reasonable amount of money on my appearance. Although I do have
the need to keep up with the latest trend, I normally spend money on other necessities such as
education or entertainment.
Would you say people spend too much on clothes nowadays?
I would say yes, people are over-spending with clothing. Many people that I know spend a
large proportion of their income on expensive pieces of clothing. They do that mainly to show
off that they belong to a higher class in the society. I just think it is a total waste of money
. Describe something interesting you learnt from the internet
You should say:
What you leant
What website you learnt it from
How you learnt it and
explain why you think it was interesting
Two weeks ago I came across a channel on youtube which is about cooking and I have learnt
how to cook a very special dish thanks to that channel. This channel has a very catchy name:
Cooking with Dog, and it is of Japanese origin. The way they present the steps are very funny
but at the same time quite easy to follow. The videos always feature a hostess that looks like a
kind-hearted housewife who is in her mid 40s and a very cute dog that just acts as an additional
feature to the channel. So the dish I was talking about is called Nigiri sushi, which is a well-
known dish not only in Japan but also all over the world. It has many variations in each country
of course but this version is the most authentic one as it was demonstrated by Japanese people
and that’s the main reason why I loved it so much. There are a number of different raw
ingredients required for this dish and most of them are raw seafood such as octopus, salmon
and seaweed. The hostess quickly guided me on how to chop things to pieces the right way,
how the seasonings are used to enhance the flavour so on and so forth. And after just 5 minutes
of watching the video, I have mastered the techniques required to prepare this dish. Afterwards,
I decided to try it out with my family and they all stood up, applauded loudly and burst out in
tears with the mouth-watering sushi dish I prepared for them. And, I have been revisiting this
channel to look for delicious recipe ever since I discovered it. I would highly recommend this
interesting channel to people that love Japanese cuisine or sushi in particular How has the
internet changed your country?
It has altered the face of my country in various ways. In terms of education the internet has
allowed us to access a gigantic, massive source of information. Many schools in my country are
now utilising internet as a main method of delivering their lectures, and so do the language
centers. Also thanks to the internet, people now have very convenient access to news and
media, which makes them become more aware of national and international affairs. And it is
certainly right to say that social media such as Facebook helps bring us together and connects
15
us to the other parts of the world. There are so many other aspects of the country that have been
changed significantly by the internet and I would say that most of them are very positive and
beneficial to the development of the country.
What would happen when the internet couldn't work in your country? In a way, I think it
would be a huge disaster if the internet suddenly went down, even for a few minutes. I think the
stock market would suffer the most in this scenario because it relies heavily on online trading
and so would most other e-commerce activities. But from another perspective it might
encourage us to socialise and interact with each other in real life, and that sounds like a good
thing to me.
Would libraries disappear in the future?
I would say that there will be much less libraries in the future and there are two main reasons
for this. Firstly, as you can see, the internet has now become a dominant source of information
and it is definitely replacing our real-life libraries. It is not always reliable but if you know how
and where to dig up information then that is not a problem. It is also quick and convenient. The
second reason is that we are on the edge of many environmental problems which require us to
cut down on the usage of trees and papers. And books are obviously made up of papers and
trees so I think we’ll definitely see less libraries in the near future. What are the benefits of
having online libraries?
As libraries are now in digital form, they can be accessed from any electronic device and also
from any corner of the world with ease. They are also automatic, that means that we can easily
search for books, citations and various pieces of information with just some simple typing. And
then the results are brought to you in mere seconds with thousands of sources to choose from.
And also, as I’ve just told you, having online libraries would certainly be beneficial to our
environment since it saves trees.
Why do young people prefer the internet to books when they want to learn things?
Young people like me were born in the era of technology and apparently we are used to the fact
that we are surrounded with electronic devices such as computers, mobilephones, e-books to
name but a few. And as I’ve just told you, tons of information can be accessed on those devices
in a flash. So it is just basically more convenient for us to study or learn new things through the
internet.
How do you think of websites like Facebook?
As many other things on the internet Facebook has many beneficial aspects. The most obvious
one is that it acts as a virtual platform for people to share their thoughts, update their life to
other people and interact and socialise with others on a global scale. So basically what it does is
connect and unite people. But it has many downsides as well. The first one is privacy concern
which has become very controversial among many societies and the second one is that many
people have become too addicted and obsessed with online social activities. They have become
too addicted to the point that they forget about real life interactions and real values around
them. And I must say that it is a very disturbing phenomenon that needs to be stopped.
-Could you tell me your full name please?
My name is IELTS EZ. But you can call me EZ for short
16
-Do you work or study?
I graduated 2 years ago and now I am working as an accountant for my uncle’s company
-Do you think reading a magazine or a newspaper can help you learn a language?
Well definitely, that is basically how I improved my English. I still remember when I was
younger I subscribed to an online magazine about science and technology which was totally in
English and I have learned so many useful vocabularies and natural expressions from there
Describe a gift for others that took you long time to choose
-What is was
-Who you gave it to
-How you choose it
And explain why you spend long time choosing it
I have had many opportunities to buy gifts before, and to be honest I am really easy and often
buy things in a flash. I never have any consideration or proper thought when buying things. But
there was this one occasion that was very very difficult for me to choose a gift. It was a gift for
my best friend’s birthday 2 years ago now and I still remember clearly the details as if it just
happened yesterday. At first I planned to go to the bookstore and buy him a very special book
about the rules of life and how to live a meaningful life because that’s what I hope he could
achieve in the future. But the moment before I entered the bookstore I noticed a joke shop right
next to the bookstore and it was so eye-catching with many novelties and other cool stuff. So I
17
just decided to give it a go and see if there’s anything interesting. After browsing through many
hilarious toys, I came across a hello kitty bikini suit and a funny thought suddenly flashed
across my mind. Yes, I thought about giving him a bikini suit for his 18 birthday as a twisted
joke instead of a meaningful book that I first planned. I was torn between the book and the suit
and I remember spending 30 minutes carefully thinking about which one I should buy. I
thought of buying both of course but then I realised I could only afford one thing. After a while,
I decided to purchase the bikini suit because I thought this is the only chance that I could give
him a bikini suit as his 18th birthday gift. I could always buy him the book at a later time so, I
gave it a shot. Later on at the party, when he opened the box that I gave him, we all burst out
laughing and we were all really happy about the idea of giving him the bikini suit. So that is the
best memory that I have ever had with my best friend and I think I could never ever forget
about it
-How to choose a gift for people who already have a lot of things
If a person really has that many things and no gift could be meaningful to him anymore then I
may not want to give him physical presents but rather I could do something meaningful for that
person instead for example I could take him out for a drink and pay for it or do things similar to
that. Or at least I could always give him a bikini suit

Describe a time that you and your friend had a disagreement
You should say:
-When this happened
-Who you disagreed with
-What you and your friend argued about
and if you two solved the disagreement in the end
I have had quite a number of disagreements with the people I know before. But the one that I
remember the most would be the quarrel I once had with my best friend not so long ago. Well ,
it was a silly argument about what he had done to me in the game Pirate Kings. And I think you
might have heard of this game if you own a smartphone and are a bit of a tech-savvy. And the
way you play this game is to visit and destroy other people’s base and then use the money to
develop your own base. So basically the game aims to create a massive frustration when one
morning you visit your fortress and see that everything has been totally wrecked by someone
and all you want is the chance to take revenge on that person. That is exactly what happened
between my best friend and I. We both play the game and had an agreement not to destroy each
other’s base. But one night, he lacked some money to progress to the next level and decided to
stab me in the back by taking all my hard-earned money and other treasure as well. Once I
knew who was behind the attack, I immediately ran to him and expressed my rage to him in a
very offensive manner. We were both very angry because he said that best friends should not
argue over such silly games as Pirate Kings. But my argument is that best friends should not
betray each other, even with the smallest thing. Anyway, after a few days not talking to each
other, I started to realise how wrong I was to pick a fight with him for such rubbish reasons.
And decided to call him and apologise

When talking about a prize that I would like to win, I suppose that there is this one particular
prize that I have always wanted to have it is a super computer of a brand called Alienware.
Well it was not so long ago when I participated in a computer game competition in Hanoi. The
competition was basically for gamers all across Vietnam to gather and battle with each other to
find out the number one player in our country. And it was a shooting game, or you might have
heard of it as First Person Shooter in technical terms. And the winner should be awarded with
the best computer ever - this is the dream of every gamer on this planet I must say. In detail, it
has extremely high processing power that could render 3d objects and execute billions of
calculations in a matter of seconds. It could run the latest games in the market with the highest
display settings and give the users the best quality images and feelings. I must admit that the
engineers of Alienware have done a pretty decent job in creating this gaming masterpiece.
However, I never won the tournament as there were so many other excellent players from the
all parts of Vietnam. And the prize went to a guy called Thạc xỉn xa la xỏỏng from Hochiminh
21
City. I was really sad but I told myself that there would be many more opportunities for me to
win this since the contest takes place in Hanoi every year. So right after this IELTS test, I’ll run
to an internet café immediately to practice my skills and prepare myself for the upcoming
contest in October
- Do you agree that there should be competition at the work place? Why?
I agree with this to some degree. To me competition is always a good thing. It is similar to the
concept of “natural selection” if you ask me, basically we will be encouraged to strive for
excellence and therefore promote the efficiency or effectiveness of what we do. But of course,
we should not overdo it and make the competition become too fierce. And in that case it might
become counter productive and demotivate people instead of encouraging them
22
- Do you work or study?
I am working as a shop assistant near wear I live
- Do you perform better when you sleep for an hour during the day?
Certainly not, I don’t think my brain can function properly with 6 hours of sleep, let alone stay
awake with only one hour of resting
After 20 years of living, the most memorable event in my childhood was when I got lost while
traveling with my family to the beach. Well, I must admit that I have always been a naughty
23
boy, even until now. It was about 10 years ago when our family decided to get away from work
and let off some steam at a secluded beach. When we first arrived at the beach, we took some
time to enjoy the view before we got to the hotel. Right at the moment we stepped down from
the coach, I quickly ran to an ice cream truck nearby because it was the first thing that caught
my attention, it was so cool, so colourful and was playing a really catchy melody. After buying
the ice cream I wanted, I continued walking to a playground not too far from there. I was so
playful at that time that my mind was full of games and nothing else. I remember wandering
around the playground for about 10 – 15 minutes and socialising, competing with other kids
and having so much fun. My father was the first one to notice my absence and was so terrified
about it. He started shouting my name and everybody else also began looking for me. All of
them were so worried and they finally found me half an hour later. My dad gave me some
awful spanking right the minute he caught me. And that was the moment I find the most
memorable, even until now
- What do you think is the age a person can become totally independent?
I don’t think this question has a definite answer. It all depends upon a number of factors. Firstly
erybody is brought up in a different environment. Some might be more mature than the others
of the same age and some might be more childish. And it also relies on the element of culture as
well. In western culture, individualism is encouraged and children show their ability to live
independently from a very young age but when you compare it to Asian countries, especially in
Vietnam, people still live with their parents even after they graduate from university! So again I
would say that it is really hard to tell
- Do you think roles of men and women are the same today as they were in the past?
I am certain that the roles of both genders have changed significantly. It is obvious that the
world today has become more balanced in terms of gender equality. We can clearly see many
of the great contributions of women to the society in terms of science and politics whereas men
can be seen taking care of domestic problems such as cooking and cleaning. Personally I think
this is a beneficial trend as we have the freedom to do what we are good at, regardless of the
gender

Describe a TV or radio show that you regularly watch or listen to. Please say
- What program is it?
- What do you like or dislike about it?
- Why do you watch or listen to it?
The program that I watch the most is Who wants to be a millionaire. Out of all the shows and
programs on TV, this is the most respectable and interesting show in my opinion. I think you
may have heard about this show before because it is really well-known and wide-spread among
many countries. Well the show is basically a question-answer type of challenge where the host
of the program throws questions at the candidate. The question’s difficulty can range from
extremely easy such as “what letter comes after C in the alphabet?” to incredibly difficult such
as “How many legs does an ant have?” or “which year was Neil Armstrong born”. The
questions also cover a wide range of topics as well so as to add more challenge to the game. So,
25
the player really really needs to be a polymath to win this game hands down– by polymath I
mean mr know it all or in other words, a person with extensive knowledge about basically
every aspect of life. The reason why it’s called who wants to be a millionaire is because the
final prize for the game is a million dollars for the winner – which is an enormous amount of
money I think. But I suppose this is a fair prize for people with extensive knowledge about life.
It kinda encourages people to become more and more aware of the world surrounding them.
And in the future If I possible I would definitely take a chance to take part in the game and try
to win 1million dollars
26
- Do you find your work easy? Why?
Both yes and no, sometimes it is quite easy because you just need to stand in front of the door
and look tough to scare people, but some other time you really need to pay close attention to
what people are doing and prevent bad things from happening
Talking about colourful places, I would love to introduce you to a really famous festival in
Sydney that I’ve just been to lately. It is called Vivid Sydney and it only started last week or so.
Well, during winter time, Sydney receives much less tourists because of the cold weather, so I
think they organise this really really lovely festival to regain millions of tourists to their city.
Well, what they do is basically project light onto buildings all around the city. But, it’s not
27
really as simple as it sounds, they employ the most creative minds to produce mesmerising
pieces of arts that kind of hypnotise the audience, including me. They are moving pictures of
beautiful flowers, people or other 3d objects of all shapes and sizes that really transform the
buildings into giant masterpieces of art. Not only were people amazed by the grand scale of the
project, which made use of almost all buildings in the central business district, but they were
also fascinated by the creativity of the maker. I felt so incredible when I walked inbetween
many walls of light, and it was like opening my mind to a brand new dimension that feels both
real and unreal at the same time. They even projected light onto the Sydney Opera house –
which is a well-known and extremely large structure near the Harbour bridge. Well...
- Is there any relation between the product’s colour and the commerce? Why?
I suppose that it has some significant effect on the sales of the product. As I’ve just explained
before, it could either due to the element of belief, or it could depend on the personal preference
of people. For example with modern technology people would prefer devices which are gray, or
black or white, just like what you can see with iphone or any other smartphone and mp3 players
on the market
- Why do you think companies do not want the employees to wear bright clothes
Oh this is a really hard question. I am not entirely sure about this decision, I can only guess that
it looks more formal to wear dark coloured clothes to work. It is similar to the image of
children wearing colourful clothes whereas adults prefer darker or more monotone pieces of
clothing. And I assume that using dark coloured clothes can prevent people from being
distracted from their work

I’m from Vietnam, it is a south-eastern asian country

I’ve just graduated from university and now actively looking for job
- Do you think your English is good?
Haha, I’m not entirely sure, but I’m confident that it’s easy to understand/. I know that it’s not
perfect yet. And I’m working really hard on it
- What will you do after studying this language?
Well English is a key to so many possibilities. I’m looking for employment opportunities with
foreign companies which have higher standard and of course higher pay
- Do you like weekends?
Absolutely. I think everybody loves weekends not just me. It’s the only time that I am released
from study and work
- What do you do usually at weekends?
Well on Friday nights I often go to the Old Quarter in Hanoi to get some good beer with my
friends. And I usually spend the last two days of the week to sit back and enjoy life to the
fullest. in a small café, reading news or out there somewhere doing physical excercise
Describe a documentary or a movie that you enjoyed and would like to watch again.
Please say
- What movie is it?
- Why did you like it so much?
- Would you recommend it to others?
Around 5 years ago when I was still in secondary school, I came across a documentary on TV
that was so good and to be honest, It had a huge impact on me and make me want to learn more
about human history. The name of the program was “History of the world” and it was produced
by BBC. And as the name suggests, it described, in chronological order, the sets of events that
happened on our planet from the beginning of time until now. The sets of events are given
names such as Prehistoric, Medieval, Modern and so on so forth. It just amazed me that there
were so many things happened in the past that helped shape the world as we know it today. The
program illustrated how the existence of human has altered the face of this planet. From wars
that destroys everything to scientific breakthroughs that help protect human kind and other
species. The program went on to explore other alternative possibilities. It asked questions like
what would happen if human had not existed on this planet? What would have been the
dominant species of the planet instead of humans? Would it be dogs? Cats? Or huge animals
like elephants and whales? All in all, the documentary is such an excellent program that I
would always recommend to everyone to watch and gain deeper understand of the human kind
29
- Do you think featuring famous artists is important for a movie’s success?
I wouldn’t think so. The strategy has some undeniable effects yes, for example it can definitely
gain popularity at the beginning, because you know, the actors are well-known. But if the
content of the movie is bad then, I wouldn’t think it could become a success eventhough it has
famous stars in it. There have been so many examples of movies that have actors with oscar
awards but still fail terribly due to bad storytelling
- Do you think people in different stages of life will choose different types of movies?
Why?
Wow it is a really hard question…. Uhm…I think it is a natural behaviour to do so. I mean, at
different age people have different ways to look at life, young people might be more optimistic
and energetic so they love action movies, but more mature people tend to watch more
informative or movies that are not the fantasy type
- Do you think that older people like to watch movies of their generation more than
modern ones?
It is all down to everyone’s personal preference really. My father loves watching old movies but
my grandfather loves modern action movies instead. But from what I can see, the vast majority
of people would want something that are similar to them to some degree. This is especially true
with older people since they tend to hate new things.

Describe an old person whom you know well and admire. Please say
- Who is this person?
- Why do you like him/her?
- What did he/she do at a young age?
- Explain what you learned from him/her
Well, I have met so many people in my life, and everyone has a different impression of who
they are, what sort of personality they possess. And there’s this one person that I truly truly
admire, to me he is like a father and a respectable mentor. And that’s my distant uncle that I’m
talking about. I first met him when I was very little, perhaps around 7 if I remember correctly.
At that time, he was a sailor on a very large ship that travelled across many countries,
sometimes even continents. As a sailor, he was extremely well-built, had dark skin and he
looked like a giant to me since I was such a small child. It is really funny that I thought of him
as Poppeye the sailor man, you know the cartoon character on TV? What I can say about him is
that he has travelled a lot, and has learned so many things from the outside world and foreign
countries as a result. He is a man full of experience, from how to operate sails and calculate
wind speed to dealing with heavy and dangerous storms. He can even speak 7 different
languages to communicate with the local people everytime he arrived in different country. I
was pretty amazed when he showed me how to calculate wind speed from simple hand-made
device cos I am really into science, especially when it has apparent real-life application. He also
showed me various survival techniques that are essential if anything were to happen with his
ship. It was truly an eye-opening experience to me whenever I have a chance to talk to him. My
uncle also taught me how to live a meaningful life helping people in need. I would say that.....
- Do you think an old person can always give good advice to a teenager?
Well I suppose that it really depends on what the advice is about and how experienced that old
person is. But most of the time, old people have lived and experienced more events than
youngsters. If the circumstances are similar, an old person can certainly give excellent advice to
help young people advoid troubles. But since different generation has distinctive set of
problems, I am sure that some advice may not work properly
