Lesson
Respiratory and Circulatory
1 Diseases

Did you find the last module interesting? Were you amazed at the awesome work of the
respiratory and circulatory system and how they work together to transport oxygen-rich blood and
nutrients to the different parts of our body? If so, then we must learn and understand the
importance on how to prevent, detect, and treat different diseases affecting the circulatory and
respiratory systems through fun-filled activities.

What’s In

Let’s Recall!
Modified True or False. Write the word true if the statement is correct and false if not,
then change the underlined word/s to make the statement true.
1. The left ventricle is the chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the lungs.
2. Gas exchange occurs in the lungs.
3. Oxygenated blood is low in CO2 and rich in oxygen.
4. When you breathe in, lungs expand, diaphragm contracts and flattens.
5. Circulatory system a two-way system.
6. The respiratory and circulatory systems work together to supply the body with
nutrients and oxygen and get rid of waste carbon dioxide.
7. Pulmonary circulation carries oxygenated blood away from the right ventricle, to the
lungs, and returns oxygenated blood to the left atrium and ventricle of the heart.
8. Systemic circulation carries oxygenated blood to the body.
9. Diffusion of gases in the alveoli and capillaries in the lungs is due to differences in air
pressure.
10. Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs, wherein it becomes
oxygenated.

Notes to the Teacher

The questions printed in this page of the module will not be accomplished by the
learner. Hence a separate copy may be provided to him/her.

COMMON DISEASES AFFECTING THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The circulatory system includes your heart, blood, and blood vessels. It carries oxygen, nutrients,
electrolytes, and hormones throughout your body. Interruptions, blockage, or diseases that affect how your
heart or blood vessels pump blood can cause complications which are sometimes fatal. These
complications can arise due to a variety of factors, from genetics to lifestyle. Below are some diseases
affecting the circulatory system.

HARMFUL EFFECTS OF TOBACCO SMOKING IN
OUR BODY

It is known to everyone that tobacco or cigarette respiratory tract diseases, including

use can have devastating effects on one’s bronchitis.
health. However, many people choose to
disregard the danger. More than 4,000 chemical
components are present in cigarette smoke,
including at least 50 that can cause cancer
which include arsenic, tar, and carbon
monoxide. Aside from these toxic products,
cigarettes also contain nicotine, which triggers
physical and psychological addiction to
cigarette. Aside from the harmful health effects,
smoking can drastically affect quality of life. It
could lead to a higher possibility of developing
mental health problems such as depression and
anxiety. It can affect skin and oral health. It
escalates the risk of having

A person who smoke cigarettes are 15 to 30 times more chances of developing lung cancer or die from
lung cancer than those who do not smoke. The longer the number of years a person smokes and the more
cigarettes consumed each day, the risk increases. Smoke from other people’s cigarettes, pipes, or cigars
(secondhand smoke) also causes lung cancer. In the United States, one out of four people who don’t
smoke, including 14 million children, were exposed to secondhand smoke during 2013–2014. (Division of
Cancer Prevention and Control 2019)

Cigarettes have a great impact on the lungs. An estimated 85% of cases of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) and of lung cancer in the US are caused by smoking. Many cancer cases
are due to cigarette smoking, including cancer of the esophagus, mouth, bladder, stomach, and pancreas.
Smoking considerably increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. It can also affect fertility and
increase the possibility of premature birth and low birth weight. (Brunet n.d.)

ANTI-SMOKING ORDINANCE

The Davao City government amended the Anti-Smoking Ordinance. They will start imposing higher penalties
for violators that was amended by the 19th City Council and approved by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
According to the City Vices Regulation Unit (VRU), this is due to the increasing number of violators every
year. Based on the penalties under the amended ordinance, the violators will now be charged P2,000 from
P1,000 for the first offense; P3,000 from P2,500 for the second offense; and P5,000 for the third and
succeeding offenses. (Manila Bulletin 2020)

Ways to Prevent Respiratory
2 and Circulatory Diseases

10 WAYS TO AVOID RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY DISEASES

We’re all aware of the importance of taking good care of our heart health, but it can be difficult to know
how. Most cases of cardiovascular disease are preventable which means no matter our age, we all need
to think about looking after our heart health.
From a heart healthy diet, to staying active and tackling stress here are ten simple changes you can make
to start taking care of your heart health.

1. Eat healthy and balance food that is low in fat and salt. A low- fat and sodium diet is important in
order to prevent y heart failure and future heart problems. Avoid canned goods, instant noodles, processed
foods like hotdog, bacon, tocino etc. Refrain from dining outside like in foodchains and restaurant.

2. Exercise and staying active promotes

overall health but always check with your doctor
before beginning exercise, especially if you
already have any respiratory or other types of
conditions.

Photo Credit: Lyle Joy G. Ligan

3. Eat more fresh and clean vegetables and

fruits. Eat a diet rich in nutrients necessary for a
healthy respiratory system. Eat foods rich in
vitamins A,C and E and the minerals zinc,
potassium, selenium, magnesium and zinc. They
are all found in fruits and vegetables especially
green leafy

vegetables.

4. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. It

boosts skin health and beauty and also
regulates body temperature. It is needed in the
processes of sweating and removal of
waste. Lack of water causes blood to become
Photo Credit: Lyle Joy G. Ligan
thicker, increasing blood pressure. Blood is
more than 90 percent water. (McIntosh 2018)

5. Don’t smoke or stay away from people who

smoke. There are approximately 600 ingredients
in cigarettes. When burned, cigarettes create
more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these
chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many
are toxic. (American
Lung Association 2020) Photo Credit: Lyle Joy G. Ligan

18
6. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight
increases the risk of high pressure, diabetes and
high cholesterol and may lead to the heart attack.
Limit your total daily calories, follow a low-fat diet,
and do physical activity in order to maintain a
healthy weight.

7. Manage Stress. If you’re living with high

levels of stress, you’re putting your entire well-
being at risk. Effective stress management helps
you to become happier, healthier, and more
productive. There are a lot of ways on how to
manage stress. The ultimate goal is a balanced
life. There is a time for school, a time for
relationships with family and friends, and a time
for relaxation, and fun.

8. Avoid alcoholic drinks. Excessive alcohol

consumption can have numerous adverse
effects on your physical and mental health and
affects your relationship with family and friends.

9. Have enough rest and sleep. Sleep at least

8-10 hours. Sleep is a vital, often neglected,
component of every person’s overall health and
well-being. Sleep is important because it
enables the body to repair and be fit and ready
for another day. Getting adequate rest may also
help prevent excess weight gain, heart disease,
and others. (Fletcher 2019)

Photo Credit: Lyle Joy G. Ligan

10. Wash your hands properly. It sounds

simple and boring, but washing your hands
properly and practicing good hygiene in general
is good for your health. Doing this will help keep
germs, viruses and bacteria from entering your
body.
