MARKING CRITERIA
Marks should be awarded according to the given Levels of Response for each Assessment Objective. Not all
the criteria listed for a Level have to be present for an answer to be awarded marks within the level; always the
aim must be for positive awarding, that is candidates are rewarded for what they know and can do, but no
deduction of marks takes place – errors, even if they form a large proportion of the answer, are simply ignored.
Candidates will not have marks deducted for incorrect facts in their answers; the marking guide requires that
such errors are ignored.
In all questions, the number of marks allocated is shown on the examination paper, and should be used as a
guide by candidates to show how much detail to give or time to spend in answering. In describing a process the
mark allocation should guide the candidate about how many steps to include. In explaining why something
happens, it guides the candidate on how many reasons to give, or how much detail to give for each reason.
Part (a) (i) & (ii) [6 marks each] – Assessment Objective 1: Knowledge and Understanding
Level 3 4-5 marks Demonstrates a clear understanding of the question. The information is
quite detailed. Generally accurate knowledge and understanding of the
subject matter. Covers the main points accurately. The information is in a
structured format.
Level 2 2-3 marks Demonstrates some understanding of the question. A fair, mainly relevant
but generally undeveloped response. The candidate demonstrates some
factual knowledge and understanding, which is fairly accurate but may lack
specific detail. Some of the main points are covered but lack substance.
The information will be presented for the most part in a structured format.
Level 1 1 mark An attempt to answer the question, but demonstrates little understanding of
the question. Very limited knowledge of the subject. Response includes only
a small amount of relevant material. Information is reported in basic outline
only or as a list, with little or no explanation. Mainly inaccurate, though
some credible points may be made.
Level 0 0 marks No attempt whatsoever to answer the set question, or the candidate
provides a wholly irrelevant response.
Level 3 5-6 marks Understands the significance of the question. Seeks to move clearly beyond
a purely descriptive approach. Justified arguments/different points of view,
supported by some discussion. Evidence of appropriate personal response.
Some evidence of informed insights.
Level 2 3-4 marks Understands the question but the response is mainly descriptive. Only one
view offered with limited support or discussion. Limited or no evidence of
informed insights.
Level 1 1-2 marks The candidate’s response is descriptive with no attempt to discuss or
evaluate the material at all. Viewpoints are unsupported.
Section A

good news of the birth of the messiah (saviour); music from angels; shepherds
visited Bethlehem; found baby laid in the manger; praised God.
For the salvation of Israel spiritual or political; fulfilment of the promise of the
long awaited Messiah; shepherds’ visit indicates Jesus’ identification with the
poor.
(b) Do you think Christians have regard for the lowly people in the society today?

send them to school; equip them with life skills for self-sustenance.
The ever increasing numbers of the poor; only help those who affiliate in their church.
A level 4 answer should express valid opinion about different points of view, well
supported by religious evidence and argument. A one-sided argument can only
attain level 2. Candidates will give a variety of responses. Any view must be
credited according to the levels of response.
Section B
Question 2
(a) (i) Describe any two temptations of Jesus in the wilderness. [6]
Tempted by the devil to change stone into bread; response- it is written that
man shall not live by bread alone; to worship and serve him; response- it is
written you must worship the Lord your God and serve him only ; to throw

your God.
(ii) Explain what was implied by the devil in any two of the temptations
of Jesus. [6]

attain level 2. Candidates will give a variety of responses. Any view must be
credited according to the levels of response.
Question 3
(a) (i) Narrate the parable of the rich young ruler. (Luke 18: 18-30) [6]
The ruler asked Jesus” good teacher what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”;
Jesus asked “ why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone, you
know the commandments…”; the ruler said he had observed the law from his
youth; Jesus told him to sell all he had and distribute to the poor; he would then
have treasure in heaven; ruler was sad; Jesus said it is hard for those with
riches to enter the kingdom of God; it is easier for a camel to go through the
eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
(ii) What lessons can we learn from the above parable? [6]
People cannot serve both God and money; riches can lead one astray from
God; make one comfortable about earthly life and forget about eternity;
however, if one is rich, charity is encouraged in the story.
(b) Do you think wealth is bad for Christians? Give reasons for your answer and
show you have thought about different points of view. [8]

attain level 2. Candidates will give a variety of responses. Any view must be
credited according to the levels of response.

(a) (i) Give an account of the incident when Jesus was asked about paying
taxes to Caesar. [6]
The religious authorities wanted to arrest Jesus but feared the crowd; sent
spies to trap him in his teaching to lay charges against him; spies flattered
Jesus asking him whether it was lawful to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor
Caesar; aware that they were not sincere, Jesus asked for a coin; he asked
whose image and inscription was in the coin; since it had Caesar’s image he
told them to pay taxes to Caesar; at the same time they should give back to
God what belonged to God.
(ii) Explain why the religious authorities were opposed to Jesus. [6]
(b) Jesus could have easily avoided conflict with the religious authorities. To what
extent do you agree? Show in your answer that you have considered different
points of view. [8]

his trial.
The religious authorities had to be challenged as they had wrong understanding; part
of Jesus’ mission as Messiah; cannot silence the crowd, especially after a healing.
A level 4 answer should express valid opinion about different points of view, well
supported by religious evidence and argument. A one-sided argument can only
attain level 2. Candidates will give a variety of responses. Any view must be
credited according to the levels of response.
