The base of a triangle is 9 cm correct to the nearestcm.

The area of this triangle is 40 cm2 correct to the nearest 5cm2.

Calculate the upper bound for the perpendicular height of this triangle. [3]

The area of a triangle is

1
𝐴𝐴 = × 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 × ℎ𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒
2

Here we have

1
~40 = × ~9 × ℎ
2

For the upper bound on height we need the area to be as large as possible and the base to

be as short as possible, i.e.

𝐴𝐴 = 42.5

𝑏𝑏 = 8.5

Hence

1
42.5 = × 8.5 × ℎ
2

𝒉𝒉 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏

The scale on a map is 1 : 20 000.

The area of a lake on the map is 1.6 square centimetres.

Calculate the actual area of the lake.

Give your answer in square metres. [3]

The scale is 1 cm on the map is equal to 20000 cm on the ground. This must be converted

to m2. This is done by dividing by 100 followed by squaring the value:

1𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 ∶ 20000 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 Converting to metres 0.01 𝑚𝑚 ∶ 200𝑚𝑚

Squaring to get metre square 0.0001 𝑚𝑚2 ∶ 40000 𝑚𝑚2

1.6 cm2 is divided by 10000 to convert into m2

Thus, the actual area can then be calculated by:

1.6 ÷ 10000
× 40000
0.0001

= 64000 𝑚𝑚2

12 m

The diagram shows the front face of a barn.

The width of the barn is 12m.
The height of the barn is 8m.
The sides of the barn are both of height 5m.
[3]
(a) Work out the area of the front face of the barn.

The barn is made out of two trapezoids with sides 5m and 8m long and height 6m (half the

base).

The area of a trapezoid of parallel sides a and b and height h is given by:

(𝑎𝑎 + 𝑏𝑏)
𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡 = ×ℎ
2

In our case a=5m, b=8m and h=6m.

(5 + 8)
𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡 = × 6 = 39𝑚𝑚2
2

Double the area to get the area of the whole front face:

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = 𝟕𝟕𝟕𝟕𝒎𝒎𝟐𝟐

(b) The length of the barn is 15 m.

NOT TO
Work out the volume of the barn. SCALE [1]

The volume of the barn is the area of the front side multiplied by the length of the barn.

8 km

A helicopter flies 8 km due north from A to B. It then flies 5km from B to C and returns to A.
Angle ABC = 150°.

(a) Calculate the area of triangle ABC. [2]

Area of a triangle is

1
𝐴𝐴 = 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 sin 𝐶𝐶
2

1
→ 𝐴𝐴 = 8 5 sin 150
2

= 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏

(b) Find the bearing of B from C. [2]

The bearing of C from B is

180 − 150

= 030

Hence, the bearing of B from C is

360 − 180 − 30

= 360 − 150

= 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐

k cm

The diagram shows a square of side k cm.

The circle inside the square touches all four sides of the square.
2
(a) The shaded area is A cm .
2 2
Show that 4A = 4k – πk . [2]

The shaded area is the difference between the area of the square with

side k and the circle with diameter k.

𝐴𝐴 = 𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 − 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎

Area of a square with side k:

𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 = 𝑘𝑘 2

Area of a circle with diameter k, and hence radius k/2 gives:

𝑘𝑘 2
𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 = 𝜋𝜋 2
(Area of a circle = 𝜋𝜋𝑟𝑟 2 )

Hence we have

2
2
𝑘𝑘
𝐴𝐴 = 𝑘𝑘 − 𝜋𝜋
2

Multiply both sides by 4 to get the final answer.

(b) Make k the subject of the formula 4A = 4k – πk . [3]

Factorise outk2 on the right hand side:

4𝐴𝐴 = (4 − 𝜋𝜋)𝑘𝑘 2

Divide both sides by the factor (4-π):

4𝐴𝐴
= 𝑘𝑘 2
4 − 𝜋𝜋

Now, take the square root of both sides to make k the subject of the formula.

where h is the height and a and b represent the 2 bases of the

trapezium.

In our case:
