FSU ECH 4604 Chemical Engineering Process Design I
FSU ECH 4604 Chemical Engineering Process Design I
Course Description
This is the first course of a two-semester capstone-design sequence on the analysis, synthesis, and design of chemical processes. This
sequence prepares students for engineering practice. Students will integrate knowledge from prior courses with process economics,
computer-aided design, engineering standards, and realistic constraints to solve open-ended process problems.

Computer Usage
Use of the chemical process simulator software package, ASPEN, MATLAB/Polymath, as well as a spreadsheet package like
Microsoft Excel, is required. ASPEN is available on the computers in the Computer Labs in the College of Engineering. Students
can install a copy of ASPEN onto their personal computers (please contact instructor for details).
Course Topics
• Process Flowsheet Synthesis & Development
• Design of Multicomponent Flash and Distillation Units
• Design of Absorbers and Extractors
• Design of Heat Exchangers
• Design of Reactors
• Design of Pumps and Compressors
• Engineering Economic Analysis
• Sequential Modular and Equation-oriented Simulation
Course Outcomes
Students will be able to:
1. synthesize a chemical process from its component parts using principles of chemical engineering and modern computer-aided
software.
2. perform an economic analysis of a chemical process, including estimation of capital and operating costs, and a profitability analysis.
3. optimize the design of a chemical process with respect to energy efficiency and economics.
4. understand and apply relevant health, safety and environmental regulations to the design of a chemical processes.
5. work effectively in teams to solve technical problems.
6. write an effective technical report.
7. gain knowledge about ethics and professionalism in chemical engineering practice.
Course Pre-requisites:
ECH3418 Separation Processes; ECH4267 Transport Phenomena II; ECH3274L Transport Phenomena I Lab
Students not meeting these prerequisites must drop the course. The department will drop students who do not do so voluntarily and the
department assumes no responsibility for any drop fees assessed by the universities.
Course Co-requisites:
ECH4504 Kinetics & Reactor Design; ECH44404L Transport Phenomena II Lab
College of Engineering Course Drop Policy:
Please review the drop policy at http://www.eng.fsu.edu/current/deadlines.html
For the Fall 2016 semester: the 7th-week drop deadline is 10/14/2016, and the late-drop deadline is 11/18/2016.
Grading Policy
Design Project 40 points
Homework Assignments 10 points
Midterms 40 points
Quizzes and In-class exercises 10 points
There will be two mid-term exams. Students may appeal the grade for up to one week after an assignment, quiz, exam, project is
returned. Class attendance is required. Points for in-class exercises will be based in part on on-time class attendance and participation.
Grading Scale: A:≥ 90; B: ≥ 80 and < 90; C: ≥ 70 and < 80; D: ≥ 60 and < 70; F: < 60 with a minimum of a 60% average on the
exams for an overall course grade of C or better.
At instructor’s discretion, cutoffs may be adjusted downward (generally not more than 1 or 2 %) to achieve a consistent mapping
of number grades to letter grades.

Student Teams
Students will work in teams on some homework assignments and on the design project. Students will have the option to
form their own teams (consisting of four members) and inform the instructor by email by noon on Friday 09/02.
Students who have not done so by that time, will be randomly assigned to teams by the instructor.
Design Project
The design project will be assigned October 25 at 4:00pm, and the final project report is due on November 22, at 4:00pm. If a
team does not submit a design report by this due date and time, then all team members will automatically receive a
failing grade for the course. Student teams will complete the design project independently. Students are not allowed to
discuss any aspect of the design project with anyone outside their team. Students are expected to uphold the Academic
Honor Code of FAMU and FSU. Any team violating the Academic Honor Code will be subject to penalties and could get a
failing grade for the course.
•Grading
The design project Project
of Design will be graded on (a) substantial correctness of results and soundness of conclusions, (b) ingenuity and logic
employed, (c) accuracy of computations, and (d) form of presentation. The use of the ASPEN process simulator is necessary.
The use of textbooks, handbooks, journal articles, and lecture notes is permitted. The instructor will be available for guidance and
feedback for resubmission of the design report. Otherwise, students will continue to work on the design project independently.
• Students must submit a satisfactory report for the design project (i.e., the grade for the original report must be above 50%). Failure
to meet this requirement will result in a failing grade for the course.
• After the design report has been returned, a team may correct and resubmit it one time with a penalty of 20%. The resubmitted
report is due on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.
• No reports may be "re-resubmitted"; that is, the grade on the resubmitted report is final.
Make-up Exam Policy
Students facing extraordinary personal situations must promptly (within a week) inform the instructor and provide written
documentation in order to schedule a make-up midterm exam.
