Preliminaries (2-3 minutes)

Teacher: Good eveningclass! How’s your day going?
[Pause for responses]
Teacher: Thank you for sharing! Let’s begin with a short prayer. Please lead the prayer ( Saguindel)?
[Students lead prayer]
Teacher: Thank you! You may now take your seats and let’s check your attendance. When I call your
name, please respond with "present."

A. Engage (5 minutes)
Teacher: Before we dive into today’s lesson, can anyone recall what we discussed in our last meeting
class?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: Great! It’s all about variables and constants Now, class who can tell me: What is a variable?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: Excellent! Variable is a letter which represents a number.
And how about a constant? What do you think?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: Great! Constant is a fixed value that does not change within an expression or equation.

B. Explore (10 minutes)

Teacher: Alright class, we’re going to kick things off with a fun activity! We’ll be unscrambling some
words. I have here some cut cartolinas with scrambled words related to today’s topic.
Teacher: I'll divide you into two groups. Each group will count "1" or "2" to decide your team. I'll give
you a cartolina with scrambled words. Unscramble them, then paste your answers on the board. Choose a
representative to explain your work, either in front or from your seats.
[Students count and form groups]
Teacher: Each group will receive scrambled words. Here they are:
 Group 1: TRINOMIAL, MONOMIAL
 Group 2: POLYNOMIALS, BINOMIAL
Teacher: Your task is to unscramble these words and provided a short insight (opinions) of that
unscrambled word. Ready? Go!
[After activity]
Teacher: What did you observe from the activity?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: What methods did you use to complete it?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: Fantastic! Today, we’ll learn about adding and subtracting polynomials.

C. Explain (25 minutes)

Teacher: Who has an idea of what is a polynomial?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: Okay, anymore ideas?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: So, A polynomial is a mathematical expression that consists of terms that include variables
raised to non-negative integer exponents, constants, and coefficients, combined using addition,
subtraction, and multiplication.Let’s break this down further."
Teacher: There are different types of polynomials we have Monomial Binomial and Trinomial :
(Monomial)
"A monomial is an polynomial expression with only one term. For example, 3x or 6x². These are
monomials because they consist of a single term."
[ Write the examples on the board: 3x, 6x², -7 ]
Teacher: can you give me an example of a monomial?
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: How about a Binomial ?
(Binomial)
"A binomial is a polynomial expression with exactly two terms. For example, 3x² + 4 or x - 5. Each of
these expressions has exactly two terms."
[ For example: 3x² + 4, x - 5, 2x + 3]
Teacher: Now can you give me an example of a binomial?
Teacher: How about the Trinomial?
(Trinomial)
"A trinomial is a polynomial expression with exactly three terms. Examples include x² + 3x + 2 and 2x²
+ 4x + 6."
[ Write the examples on the board: x² + 3x + 2, 2x² + 4x + 6, 3x + 5x+ 7 ]
Teacher: can you give me an example of a trinomial?
Teacher: Do you now understand what are the different types of polynomials? If yes let’s now proceed
on how to add and subtract the polynomial expressions
[Wait for responses]
Teacher: When adding polynomials, we combine like terms.Like terms are terms that have the
same variable raised to the same exponent
Teacher: Let’s go through some examples step-by-step..
Provide examples and go through the steps]
[Explain and give examples for adding and subtracting polynomials]
Here are the steps in adding polynomials:
1.Arrange each polynomial in standard form.
2.Group the like terms.
3.Simplify by combining like terms.
Remember this acronym to add polynomials :
C- combine like terms
A- add their numerical coefficients applying the rule in adding integers
C- copy the literal coefficients
Teacher: Remember the acronym for adding polynomials: C-A-C.

•Example of Adding Monomial

Problem: 5x + 3x
Steps:
- Combine the like terms: 5x and 3x
- Add the numerical coefficients: 5 + 3 = 8
- Copy the literal coefficient: x
Answer:5x + 3x = 8x
•Example of Adding Binomial
Problem: (4x + 2) + (3x + 5)
Steps:
- Combine the like terms:
4x and 3x ; 2 and 5
- Add the numerical coefficients: 4x + 3x = 7x ; 2 + 5 = 7
Answer: (4x + 2) + (3x + 5) = 7x + 7
• Example of Adding Trinomial
Problem 1: (2x² + 3x + 1) + (4x²+ 2x + 5)
Steps:
- Combine the like terms: 2x² and 4x²; 3x and 2x ; 1 and 5
- Add the numerical coefficients:
2x² + 4x² = 6x²; 3x + 2x = 5x ; 1 + 5 = 6
Answer:(2x² + 3x + 1) + (4x² + 2x + 5) = 6x² + 5x + 6
Problem 2:( x²+5x-2)+ (2x²-3x+4)
Steps:
- Combine the like terms: x² and 2x² ; 5x and -3x ; -2 and 4
- Add the numerical coefficients:
x²+2x²= 3x² ; 5x+ (-3)= 2x ; -2+4=2
Answer:(x²+5x-2)+ (2x²-3x+4)= 3x²+2x+2

Subtracting polynomials involves taking one polynomial (the subtrahend) away from another
polynomial (the minuend) by changing the signs of the terms in the subtrahend and then combining
like terms.
Steps in Subtracting Polynomials: 1. Change the
sign of every term in the subtrahend and add it to minuend.(+ Turns to - and - turns to +)
2. Apply the rule in adding polynomials
Remember this acronym to subtract polynomials
C- change the sign of every term in the subtrahend
A- apply the rule in adding polynomials
C- combine like terms
A- add their numerical coefficients applying the rule in adding integers
C- copy the literal coefficients .

Let’s look at an example.

•Example of Subracting Monomial:
Problem:9x−4x
Steps:
C: Change the sign of the subtrahend: 4x becomes −4x
A: Apply the rule in adding: 9x+(−4x)
C: Combine like terms: both terms are in x
A: Add the numerical coefficients: 9−4=5
C: Copy the literal coefficient x
Answer: 9x−4x=5x
•Example of Subracting Binomial:
Problem:(5x+7)−(2x−3)
Steps:
C: Change the sign of every term in the subtrahend:(5x+7)−(2x−3) becomes (5x+7)+(−2x+3)
A: Apply the rule in adding polynomials.
C: Combine like terms: 5x and −2x, 7 and 3
A: Add their numerical coefficients:
5x−2x=3x
7+3=10
C: Copy the literal coefficients: x for the variable terms.
Answer:(5x+7)−(2x−3)=3x+10

•Example of Subracting Trinomial:

Problem:(7x²+5x−4)−(3x²−2x+6)
Steps:
C: Change the sign of every term in the subtrahend:(7x²+5x−4)−(3x²−2x+6) becomes (7x²+5x−4)+
(−3x²+2x−6)
A: Apply the rule in adding polynomials.
C: Combine like terms: 7x² and −3x², 5x and 2x,−4and −6
A: Add the numerical coefficients:
7x²−3x²=4x²
5x+2x=7x
−4−6=−10
C: Copy the literal coefficients: x² and x
Answer: (7x²+5x−4)−(3x²−2x+6)=4x²+7x−10

Teacher: Does anyone have questions so far?

[Wait for questions]
Teacher: Let's see if you’ve grasped the concepts. Who can answer these polynomial expressions on the
board?
Monomial: 3x+5x=
Binomial: (5x²+7)−(3x²+2)=
Trinomial: (x²+3x+4)+(2x²−5x+6)=
[Call on students to solve examples on the board]

D. Elaborate (10 minutes)

Teacher: Now, we’ll divide your groups into 3 for another activity. Same to our previous activity we will
count 1 2 3 to identify your specific groups Each group will receive a manila paper with polynomial
problems to solve using addition and subtraction.
Teacher: Discuss with your group how to solve them, simplify, and prepare a short presentation of your
solutions.
Teacher: Remember the guided questions on the manila paper. Ready? Go!

[Monitor and assist groups]

Generalization:
