INTRODUCTION
• The word Veda literally means the ‘storehouse of all knowledge.’ Therefore, the Vedas
contain all knowledge that is essential for mankind.

• Vedic mathematics is a collection of sixteen beautiful formulae from the Vedas,

discovered by, Jagadguru Sankaracharya Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj. The
original source of Vedic mathematics is the Atharva Veda and all the sutras and sub-
sutras were rediscovered by Swamiji between 1911 and 1918.

• It is a collection of Methods or Sutras to solve numerical computations quickly and faster.

It consists of 16 Sutras called Formulae and 13 sub-sutras called Sub Formulae, which
can be applied to the solving of problems in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus,
conics, etc. All the sutras and sub-sutras of Vedic maths help to perform mathematical
operations quickly and accurately.
HISTORY OF VEDIC MATHS
• The ancient system of Vedic Mathematics was rediscovered from the Indian Sanskrit texts
known as the Vedas, between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960).

• At the beginning of the twentieth century, when there was a great interest in the Sanskrit
texts in Europe, Bharati Krsna tells us some scholars ridiculed certain texts which were
headed 'Ganita Sutras'- which means mathematics. They could find no mathematics in the
translation and dismissed the texts as rubbish.

• Bharati Krsna, who was himself a scholar of Sanskrit, Mathematics, History, and
Philosophy, studied these texts and after a lengthy and careful investigation was able to
reconstruct the mathematics of the Vedas. According to his research, all of mathematics is
based on sixteen Sutras or word formulae.
HISTORY OF VEDIC MATHS
• Bharati Krsna wrote sixteen volumes expounding the Vedic system but these were
unaccountably lost and when the loss was confirmed in his final years he wrote a single
book: Vedic Mathematics, currently available. It was published in 1965, five years after
his death.
• A copy of the book was brought to London a few years later and some English
mathematicians (Kenneth Williams, Andrew Nicholas, Jeremy Pickles) took an interest in
it. They extended the introductory material given in Bharati Krsna's book and gave many
courses and talks in London. A book (now out of print), Introductory Lectures on Vedic
Mathematics, was published in 1981. Between 1981 and 1987 Andrew Nicholas made four
trips to India initially to find out what further was known about it.

BENEFITS OF VEDIC MATHS
Ø Vedic Mathematics means that calculations can be carried out mentally (though the
methods can also be written down).
Ø The application of Vedic maths in the simplification of numerical problems is many times
faster than modern methods of calculations. Sometimes, this way of simplifying
numerical calculations does not require paper and pen also.
Ø Since Vedic Maths uses a simple calculation method, people who loved mathematics
were proud of doing the fastest calculations. For people who disliked calculations, Vedic
Math made it easier for them to get through the most rigid calculations with ease.
Ø When the basics are straightforward, a child can solve any number of problems using his
intuition; the most complex issues involving cube roots, square roots, cubes, and squares
can also be solved with ease when the knowledge of Vedic maths is clear.
FEATURES OF VEDIC MATHS
• Integrity: All sixteen sutras are related to one another to make it easier for better
understanding; one single sutra can be used to solve multiple arithmetic
calculations using one rule. For example, Nikhilam Navatascaramam dasathah is
used for both general multiplication and division.
• Simplicity: In this express world, simplicity is the best way of saving time and
increasing productivity; our ancestors have come up with a solution of the most
complicated multiplication problems that involve more than 5 step problems using
one single and simple step; which is the uniqueness of Vedic Maths.
• Creativity: The best practice to solve any problem is to look at all the perception
that needs creativity and understand that there are more ways to solve the
problem, which encourages the student to find a unique approach to solve any
problem.
• Fast and Accurate Result: Mental calculation is the main strategy
followed by Vedic Maths; when a problem is solved using a simple
method of calculating time has been saved by increasing productivity;
since the steps are less probability of accuracy is more.
• Intuitional abilities: Based on all the above features, it is clear that
Vedic Maths gives faster and more accurate results; this quality
encourages the student to be more confident and to be more
competent, increasing his intuition abilities.
• Improve Memory and Concentration: Since all the calculations are
done mentally, and with very few steps, students remember the
basics with ease, which improves their memory and concentration.
• Innovation: Vedic Maths welcomes more scholars and mathematicians
to implement these methods with added creativity and innovate more
math tricks in modern mathematics.
• Algebraic Connection: When one practices these math tricks of
arithmetic calculations based on the Vedic Maths method of
learning, it is easier for them to apply it in any algebraic problem.
• Application Area: Vedic Maths Sutras covers all the nook and
corner in Mathematics, starting from arithmetic operations,
geometry, trigonometry, analytical astronomy, calculus, differential
and integral, etc. the list goes on providing endless possibilities of
applications
