5. A copper plate was dipped into a solution of AgNO3. After some time, a black
layer was deposited on the copper plate. State the reason for it. Write the chemical
equation for the reaction involved.
Ans: Copper lies above silver in the activity series. This means that copper is more
reactive than silver. Therefore, copper had replaced silver from AgNO 3 solution .
Silver got deposited on the copper plate and changed to black after some time
because silver and also some salts of silver are sensitive to light. They readily
become blackish on standing or on exposure to air.
Cu(s) + 2 AgNO3 (aq) Cu (NO3)2 (aq) + 2Ag(s)
(Black)
6. (a) Write the balanced chemical equation for the chemical reaction between
manganese dioxide and aluminium power. What happens if manganese
powder is heated with aluminium oxide?
(b) Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity only in the molten state and not
in the solid state ?
Ans: (a) 3MnO2 (s) + 4Al (s) ⎯⎯⎯ 2Al2O3 (s) + 3 Mn (s)
No chemical reaction occurs because manganese is less reactive than
aluminium.
(b) The ionic compounds conduct electricity due to the movement of ions. Since
the ions have hardly any mobility in the solid state, these are not conducting .
However, in the molten state, the ions can move freely and thee compounds are
therefore, conducting.

7. Write the names and symbols of two most reactive metals. Explain by drawing
electronic structure how any one of the two metals reacts with a halogen. State any
four physical properties of the compound formed.
Ans: The most reactive metals belobelong
ng to group 1. For example, sodium (Na) and
potassium (K). These meals react with halogens (e.g. CI) to form ionic compounds
(e.g. NaCl, KCl)
[2 × 3 = 6]
8. A student has been collecting silver coins and copper coins. One day she observed
a black coating on silver coins and a green coating on copper coins. Which
chemical phenomenon is responsible for these coatings? Write the chemical names
of black and green coating ? [5 × 1 = 5]
Ans: The phenomenon is known as corrosion. Air contains traces of hydrogen sulphide
gas which reacts with silver metal present in the coin to form silver sulphide. It is
black in colour.
2Ag + H2S Ag2S + H2
(Air) Silver sulphide
(Black)
Similarly, copper present in the coin reacts with oxygen and traces of both carbon
dioxide and water vapors present in air to form a green mass. It is chemically basic
copper carbonate.
