The soldier had fallen and the soldier was now

lying on the path on the ground. The soldier was

hurt. The solder’s arm lay twisted whilst the

soldier’s face sank into ground. The ground was

muddy and the ground was cold and wet. The

soldier’s equipment had also suffered: it lay

scattered in pieces on the path. Barbed wire

wound itself around the soldier’s injured limbs,

entrapping the soldier with no intent to help the

soldier or release the soldier.

A version of the improved paragraph.

The soldier had fallen and was now lying

precariously on the obliterated wooden
walkway in the middle of the battlefield. The
young serviceman was hurt. His arm lay twisted
whilst his face sank into the muddy, cold and
water-logged earth. His equipment had also
suffered: it lay scattered in pieces, strewn
alongside the splintered planks of wood. Barbed
wire wound itself around the fallen comrade’s
injured limbs, entrapping the soldier with no
intent to help or release this newly-fallen victim
of war.

clenched his teeth.

The sky turned dark and it wasn’t

He charged out of the trenches,

He pulled his cap over his eyes, folded

his arms and slumped to the floor.

Flashback example

BOOM! The ground below me shook again, followed by

bright lights that blinded me for several seconds.
Suddenly, I was engulfed by thick, black, putrid smoke.
Another explosion, more bright lights and the smell of
death overwhelmed me. I could no longer see the injured
soldier. Where had he gone? Was he still alive? Was
anyone else hurt? Adrenaline raced through my entire
body; I knew what I had to do.
The field was perilous and fraught with dangers. Each
time I tried to take a step, my feet sank deeper and
deeper into the muddy wasteland that was now ladened
with exposed tree roots, abandoned equipment and
shattered pieces of metal from the exploding bombs.
However, I kept my wits about me overcoming the next
obstacle. The twisted barbed wire hung like rows of angry
razors and I carefully prised a gap between them whilst
the sounds of machine guns echoed in my ears. My heart
was pounding and … “Incoming!” yelled a voice from
behind me, “Take cover!”
