1. (Centrifugal pumps Shown in Fig. are front and side views of a centrifugal
pump rotor or impeller. If the pump delivers 200 liters/s of water and the blade
exit angle is 35° from the tangential direction, determine the power requirement
associated with flow leaving at the blade angle. The flow entering the rotor
blade row is essentially radial as viewed from a stationary frame. (ANS: 348
4W)
2. (Centrifugal pump) The velocity triangles for water flow through a radial pump
rotor are as indicated in Fig. (0) Determine the energy added to each unit mass
(kg) of water as it flows through the rotor. (b) Sketch an appropriate blade
section. (ANS: 404 Nm/kg)

3. The following details refer to a centrifugal pump. Outer diameter 30cm, eye
diameter 15 cm. blade angle at inlet (B1=30°) blade angle at outlet (B2=25°).
Impeller speed (N=1450 rpm). The whirl (tangent) velocity at inlet is zero.
Determine (a)- the torque applied if the 𝜼hyd.=0.76%. (b)- The power when the
width of blades at outlet is 2 cm and equal the width at inlet. (c)- The head.
4. The internal and external diameters of the impeller of a centrifugal pump are
200 mm and 400 mm respectively. The pump is running at 1200 rpm. The vane
angles of the impeller at inlet and outlet are 20° and 30° respectively. The
water enters the impeller radially and velocity of flow is constant. Determine
the work done by the impeller per unit weight of water.
5. A centrifugal pump is to discharge 0.118 m3/s at a speed of 1450 rpm. against
a head of 25 m. The impeller diameter is 250 mm, its width at outlet is 50 mm
and manometric efficiency is 75%. Determine the vane angle at the outer
periphery of the impeller.𝜂𝑚𝑎𝑛 = 𝐻𝑚 ⁄𝑈2 𝑉𝜃2 = 𝐻𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 ⁄𝐻𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑙
6. A centrifugal pump delivers water against a net head of 14.5 meters and a
design speed of 1000 rpm. The vanes are curved back to an angle of 30° with
the periphery. The impeller diameter is 300 mm and outlet width are 50 mm.
Determine the discharge of the pump if manometric efficiency is 95%.
7. A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to two times the inner
diameter and running at 1000 rpm. works against a total head of 40 m. The
velocity of flow through the impeller is constant and equal to 2.5 m/s. The
vanes are set back at an angle of 40° at outlet. If the outer diameter of the
impeller is 500 mm and width at outlet is 50 mm, determine:(i) Vane angle at
inlet, (iii) Manometric efficiency. (ii) Work done by impeller on water per
second, and Head.
8. A centrifugal pump discharges 0.15 m3/s of water against a head of 12.5 m,
the speed of the impeller being 600 rpm. The outer and inner diameters of
impeller are 500 mm and 250 mm respectively and the vanes are bent back at
35° to the tangent at exit. If the area of flow remains 0.07 m2 from inlet to
outlet, calculate:
(i) Manometric efficiency of pump,
(ii) Vane angle at inlet, and
(iii) Loss of head at inlet to impeller when the discharge is reduced by 40%
without changing the speed.
