A Time of Crisis!!!
God abhors indifference and disloyalty in a time of crisis in his
work. The whole universe is watching with inexpressible interest
closing scenes of the great controversy between good and evil. Th
people of God are nearing the borders of the eternal world; what is
more importance to them than that they be loyal to the God of
heaven? All through the ages, God has had moral heroes, and he h
them now; those who, like Joseph and Elijah and Daniel, are not
ashamed to acknowledge themselves his peculiar people. Such me
make their wills and plans subordinate to the law of God. For love
him, they count not their lives dear unto themselves. Their work
to catch the light from the Word, and let it shine forth to the wor
in clear, steady rays. Fidelity to God is their motto.
RH September 18, 1913, par. 9
We are living in a time that calls for decided action. The world is more
bitterly opposed than ever to Gospel reform. But notwithstanding this,
God's work is to go forward. The words of Christ come down to us who are
living at the close of the earth's history: “When these things shall begin to
come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption
draweth nigh.” The nations are in unrest. Times of perplexity are upon us.
Men's hearts are failing them for fear of the things that are coming upon
the earth. But those who believe in God will hear His voice amid the storm,
saying, “It is I; be not afraid.” The world is lying in wickedness and
apostasy. Rebellion to God's law seems almost universal. But amid the
tumult of excitement, with confusion in every place, there is a work to be
done for God in the world. ST October 9, 1901, par. 11
Time is Precious. Time is Running Out !!!
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:16
God has not revealed to us the time when this message [the third angel's]
will close, or when probation will have an end.... Letters have come to me
asking me if I have any special light as to the time when probation will
close; and I answer that I have only this message to bear, that it is now
time to work while the day lasts, for the night cometh in which no man
can work.75The Review and Herald, October 9, 1894. FLB 215.2
When Jesus rises up in the most holy place, and lays off His mediatorial
garments, and clothes Himself with the garments of vengeance in place of
the priestly attire, the work for sinners will be done.... The probation of all
closes when the pleading for sinners is ended and the garments of
vengeance are put on.76Testimonies for the Church 2:691. FLB 215.3
The case of every soul will have been decided, and there will be no atoning
blood to cleanse from sin.... Then the restraining Spirit of God is
withdrawn from the earth. FLB 215.4
We have no time to lose. We know not how soon our probation may close
Christ is soon to come.79Testimonies for the Church 8:314. FLB 215.6
When probation ends, it will come suddenly, unexpectedly—at a time when
we are least expecting it. But we can have a clean record in heaven today,
and know that God accepts us; and finally, if faithful, we shall be gathered
into the kingdom of heaven. FLB 215.7
We must have a greater nearness to God. Much less of self and much more
of Jesus Christ and His grace must be brought into our everyday life. We
are living in an important period of this world’s history. The end of all
things is at hand; the sands of time are fast running out !!! 4LtMs, Lt 55,
1886, par. 2
Time, precious time is passing and you must not be found
slothful. Your souls are worth a thousand worlds. Satan is
fearfully in earnest, and will you be slothful? Satan is diligently
working to keep you out of heaven by leading to sin and
slothfulness. You see all around you diligent for the things
which perish, and will you be slothful in seeking the kingdom of
heaven and the righteousness of God? Be wise in the things
which concern your eternal interest. Make thorough work here,
secure the immortal treasure. Let this be your highest
ambition. The crown is to them that run, and is at the finishing
of the race, the end of the race. Will you heed the injunction of
the apostle, “So run, that ye may obtain?” 1 Corinthians 9:24.
2LtMs, Lt 7, 1869, par. 11
The time is upon us when the miracle-working power of the arch deceiver
will be more decidedly revealed. And his deceptions will increase in their
delusive attraction, so that they will perplex, and if possible, deceive, the
very elect. The prince of darkness with his evil angels is working upon the
Christian world, inducing those who profess the name of Christ to stand
under the banner of darkness, to make war with those who keep the
commandments of God, and have the faith of Jesus. An apostate church
will unite with the powers of earth and hell to place upon the forehead or
in the hand, the mark of the beast, and prevail upon the children of God to
worship the beast and his image. They will seek to compel them to
renounce their allegiance to God's law, and yield homage to the papacy.
Then will come the times which will try men's souls; for the confederacy
of apostasy will demand that the loyal subjects of God shall renounce the
law of Jehovah, and repudiate the truth of his word. Then will the gold be
separated from the dross, and it will be made apparent who are the godly,
who are loyal and true, and who are the disloyal, the dross and the tinsel.
What clouds of chaff will then be borne away by the fan of God!
Where now our eyes can discover only rich floors of wheat, will be chaff
blown away with the fan of God. Every one who is not centered in Christ
will fail to stand the test and ordeal of that day. While those who are
clothed with Christ's righteousness will stand firm to truth and duty, those
who have trusted in their own righteousness will be ranged under the black
banner of the prince of darkness. Then it will be seen whether the choice is
for Christ or Belial. Those who have been self-distrustful, who have been so
circumstanced that they have not dared to face stigma and reproach, will
at last openly declare themselves for Christ and his law; while many who
have appeared to be flourishing trees, but who have borne no fruit, will go
with the multitude to do evil, and will receive the mark of apostasy in the
forehead or in the hand. RH November 8, 1892, par. 7
God is leading a people out from the world upon the exalted platform of
eternal truth, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. He will
discipline and fit up His people. They will not be at variance, one believing
one thing, and another having faith and views entirely opposite, each
moving independently of the body. Through the diversity of the gifts and
governments that He has placed in the church, they will all come to the
unity of the faith. If one man takes his views of Bible truth without regard
to the opinions of his brethren, and justifies his course, alleging that he
has a right to his own peculiar views, and then presses them upon others,
how can he be fulfilling the prayer of Christ? And if another and still
another arises, each asserting his right to believe and talk what he pleases
without reference to the faith of the body, where will be that harmony
which existed between Christ and His Father, and which Christ prayed
might exist among His brethren? 3T 446.3
God is leading out a people and establishing them upon the one great
platform of faith, the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus.
He has given His people a straight chain of Bible truth, clear and
connected. This truth is of heavenly origin and has been searched for as
for hidden treasure. It has been dug out through careful searching of the
Scriptures and through much prayer. 3T 447.1

Luke 9: 23; And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
The most difficult sermon to preach and the hardest to practise is self-denial. The greedy
sinner, self, closes the door to the good which might be done, but which is not done
because money is invested for selfish purposes. But it is impossible for any one to retain
the favor of God and enjoy communion with the Saviour, and at the same time be
indifferent to the interests of his fellow beings who have no life in Christ, who are
perishing in their sins. Christ has left us a wonderful example of self-sacrifice. He pleased
not himself, but spent his life in the service of others. RH January 31, 1907, par. 5

There are but few, very few, faithful watchmen who stand at their post feeling their
responsibility as faithful sentinels to warn of danger and cry to the people the time of
night. There are but few men on the walls of Zion to lift up their voice and cry aloud and
spare not, showing “My people their transgressions and the house of Israel their sins.”
[Isaiah 58:1.] 2LtMs, Lt 34, 1875, par. 7
Just as long as God has a people, just as long as He has a church, He will have those who
will cry aloud and spare not, who will be His instruments to reprove selfishness and sins,
and will not shun to declare the whole counsel of God whether men will hear or forbear.
1LtMs, Lt 7a, 1860, par. 9 ( Acts 20: 27, Ps. 40: 8-10)
The people are asleep in their sins, and need to be alarmed before they can shake off this
lethargy. Their ministers have preached smooth things; but God's servants, who bear
sacred, vital truths, should cry aloud and spare not, that the truth may tear off the
garment of security, and find its way to the heart. GW92 89.3
Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled
with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to
their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, “Follow Me.” GW 363.2
There is need of coming close to the people by personal effort. If less time were given to
sermonizing, and more time were spent in personal ministry, greater results would be
seen. The poor are to be relieved, the sick cared for, the sorrowing and the bereaved
comforted, the ignorant instructed, the inexperienced counseled. We are to weep with
those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice. Accompanied by the power of
persuasion, the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, this work will not, cannot,
be without fruit.—The Ministry of Healing, 143, 144. GW 363.3
Our Saviour went from house to house, healing the sick, comforting the mourners,
soothing the afflicted, speaking peace to the disconsolate. He took the little children in
His arms and blessed them and spoke words of hope and comfort to the weary mothers.
With unfailing tenderness and gentleness, He met every form of human woe and
affliction. Not for Himself, but for others did He labor. He was the servant of all. It was
His meat and drink to bring hope and strength to all with whom He came in contact. And
as men and women listened to the truths that fell from His lips, so different from the
traditions and dogmas taught by the rabbis, hope sprang up in their hearts. In His
teaching there was an earnestness that sent His words home with convicting power.

MESSAGE INTRODUCTION PAGE
Christ is represented as stooping from His throne and bending earthward, to send help to
every needy soul who asks Him in faith. His ear is listening to every cry from needy souls.
He is approving or condemning the actions of human beings. He is raising up the fallen,
bringing hope to the hopeless, and placing their feet in sure paths. Let God work more
largely with His church and reveal Christ to the people. 14LtMs, Lt 134, 1899, par. 9
The enemy is seeking to divert the minds of our brethren and sisters from the work of
preparing a people to stand in these last days. His sophistries are designed to lead minds
away from the perils and duties of the hour. They estimate as of little value the light that
Christ came from heaven to give to John for His people. They teach that the scenes just
before us are not of sufficient importance to receive special attention. They make of no
effect the truth of heavenly origin, and rob the people of God of their past experience,
giving them instead a false science. “Thus saith the Lord: Stand ye in the ways, and see,
and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein.” [Jeremiah 6:16.] GW
306.2
“God has warned his people not to become absorbed in politics.
We cannot bear the sign of God as his commandment-keeping
people, if we mingle with the strife of the world. We are not to
give our minds to political issues. God's people are walking
contrary to his will when they mix up with politics, and those
who commence this work in the Southern States reveal that
they are not taught and led by God, but by that spirit which
creates contention and strife and every evil work. We are
subjects of the Lord's kingdom, and we are to establish that
kingdom in righteousness. 1 Peter 1:13-28.” GH August 1, 1899,
par. 6
Our Attitude in Regard to Politics [POLITRIX]
To the Teachers and Managers of our Schools,
—Those who have charge of our institutions and our schools should guard themselves
diligently, lest by their words and sentiments they lead the students into false paths.
Those who teach the Bible in our churches and our schools are not at liberty to unite in
making apparent their prejudices for or against political men or measures, because by
so doing they stir up the minds of others, leading each to advocate his favorite theory.
There are among those professing to believe present truth, some who will thus be stirred
up to express their sentiments and political preferences, so that division will be brought
into the church. GW 391.1
The Lord would have His people bury political questions. On these themes silence is
eloquence. Christ calls upon His followers to come into unity on the pure gospel
principles which are plainly revealed in the word of God. We cannot with safety vote for
political parties; for we do not know whom we are voting for. We cannot with safety
take part in any political scheme. We cannot labor to please men who will use their
influence to repress religious liberty, and to set in operation oppressive measures to
lead or compel their fellow-men to keep Sunday as the Sabbath. The first day of the
week is not a day to be reverenced. It is a spurious sabbath, and the members of the
Lord's family cannot participate with the men who exalt this day, and violate the law of
God by trampling upon His Sabbath. The people of God are not to vote to place such men
in office; for when they do this, they are partakers with them of the sins which they
commit while in office. GW 391.2
We are not to compromise principle by yielding to the opinions and prejudices which we
may have encouraged before we united with God's commandment-keeping people. We
have enlisted in the army of the Lord, and we are not to fight on the enemy's side, but on
the side of Christ, where we can be a united whole, in sentiment, in action, in spirit, in
fellowship. Those who are Christians indeed will be branches of the true vine, and will
bear the same fruit as the vine. They will act in harmony, in Christian fellowship. They
will not wear political badges, but the badge of Christ. GW 392.1
What are we to do, then?—Let political questions alone. “Be ye not unequally yoked
together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness? and what concord hath Christ with
Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?” [2 Corinthians 6:14, 15.]
What can there be in common between these parties? There can be no fellowship, no
communion. GW 392.2
The word “fellowship” means participation, partnership. God employs the strongest figures to
show that there should be no union between worldly parties and those who are seeking the
righteousness of Christ. What communion can there be between light and darkness, truth and
unrighteousness? None whatever. Light represents righteousness; darkness, unrighteousness.
Christians have come out of darkness into the light. They have put on Christ, and they wear the
badge of truth and obedience. They are governed by the elevated and holy principles which Christ
expressed in His life.... GW 392.3
Those teachers in the church or in the school who distinguish themselves by their zeal in
politics, should be relieved of their work and responsibilities without delay; for the Lord
will not co-operate with them. The tithe should not be used to pay any one for
speechifying on political questions. Every teacher, minister, or leader in our ranks who is
stirred with a desire to ventilate his opinions on political questions, should be converted
by a belief in the truth, or give up his work. His influence must tell as a laborer together
with God in winning souls to Christ, or his credentials must be taken from him. If he
does not change, he will do harm, and only harm.... GW 393.1
“Be Ye Separate”
I call upon my brethren who are appointed to educate, to change their course of action. It
is a mistake for you to link your interests with any political party, to cast your vote
with them or for them. Those who stand as educators, as ministers, as laborers together
with God in any line, have no battles to fight in the political world. Their citizenship is
in heaven. The Lord calls upon them to stand as a separate and peculiar people. He would
have no schisms in the body of believers. His people are to possess the elements of
reconciliation. GW 393.2
Is it their work to make enemies in the political world?—No, no. They are to stand as
subjects of Christ's kingdom, bearing the banner on which is inscribed, “The
commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” They are to carry the burden of a special
work, a special message. We have a personal responsibility, and this is to be revealed
before the heavenly universe, before angels, and before men. God does not call upon us to
enlarge our influence by mingling with society, by linking up with men on political
questions, but by standing as individual parts of His great whole, with Christ as our head.
Christ is our Prince, and as His subjects we are to do the work appointed us by God....
GW 393.3
The question may be asked, Are we to have no union whatever with the world? The word
of the Lord is to be our guide. Any connection with infidels and unbelievers that would
identify us with them, is forbidden by the Word. We are to come out from among them,
and be separate. In no case are we to link ourselves with them in their plans of work. But
we are not to live reclusive lives. We are to do worldlings all the good we possibly can.
GW 394.1
There is a large vineyard to be cultivated; but while Christians are to work among
unbelievers, they are not to appear like worldlings. They are not to spend their time
talking politics or acting politics; for by so doing they give the enemy opportunity to
come in and cause variance and discord. Those in the ministry who desire to stand as
politicians, should have their credentials taken from them; for this work God has not
given to high or low among His people. GW 395.1
God calls upon all who minister in word and doctrine to give the trumpet a certain sound.
All who have received Christ, ministers and lay members, are to arise and shine; for great
peril is right upon us. Satan is stirring up the powers of earth. Everything in this world is
in confusion. God calls upon His people to hold aloft the banner bearing the message of
the third angel.... GW 395.2
God's children are to separate themselves from politics, from any alliance with
unbelievers. They are not to link their interests with the interests of the world. “Give
proof of your allegiance to Me,” He says, “by standing as My chosen heritage, as a people
zealous of good works.” Do not take part in political strife. Separate from the world, and
refrain from bringing into the church or school ideas that will lead to contention and
disorder. Dissension is the moral poison taken into the system by human beings who are
selfish. God wants His servants to have clear perceptions, true and noble dignity, that
their influence may demonstrate the power of truth. GW 395.3
The Christian life is not to be a haphazard, emotional life. True Christian influence,
exerted for the accomplishment of the work God has appointed, is a precious agency, and
it must not be united with politics, or bound up in a confederacy with unbelievers. God is
to be the center of attraction. Every mind that is worked by the Holy Spirit will be
satisfied with Him.—Letter 95, 1899. GW 395.4
“None of us liveth to himself.” [Romans 14:7.] Let those who are tempted to take part in
politics, remember that every move they make has its influence upon others. When ministers
or others in responsible positions make remarks in regard to these matters, they cannot gather
up the thoughts they have planted in human minds. Under Satan's temptations they have set
in operation a train of circumstances leading to results of which they little dream. An act, a
word, a thought, cast into the minds of the great concourse of humanity, if it bears the
heavenly endorsement, will yield a harvest of precious fruit; but if it is inspired by Satan, it will
cause the root of bitterness to spring up, whereby many will be defiled. Then let the stewards
of God's grace in any line of service, beware how they mingle the common with the sacred.
GW 396.1
The government under which Jesus lived was corrupt and oppressive; on every hand were
crying abuses,—extortion, intolerance, and grinding cruelty. Yet the Saviour attempted
no civil reforms. He attacked no national abuses, nor condemned the national enemies.
He did not interfere with the authority or administration of those in power. He who was
our example kept aloof from earthly governments. Not because He was indifferent to the
woes of men, but because the remedy did not lie in merely human and external measures.
To be efficient, the cure must reach men individually, and must regenerate the heart. DA
509.3
Not by the decisions of courts or councils or legislative assemblies, not by the patronage
of worldly great men, is the kingdom of Christ established, but by the implanting of
Christ's nature in humanity through the work of the Holy Spirit. “As many as received
Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His
name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man,
but of God.” John 1:12, 13. Here is the only power that can work the uplifting of
mankind. And the human agency for the accomplishment of this work is the teaching and
practicing of the word of God. DA 509.4
Now, as in Christ's day, the work of God's kingdom lies not with those who
are clamoring for recognition and support by earthly rulers and human
laws, but with those who are declaring to the people in His name those
spiritual truths that will work in the receivers the experience of Paul: “I
am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in
me.” Galatians 2:20. Then they will labor as did Paul for the benefit of
men. He said, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did
beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.”
2 Corinthians 5:20. DA 510.2
A Warning Against False Teaching
GW 305
At this time we need in the cause of God spiritual-minded men, men who are firm in principle, and who have a clear
understanding of the truth. I have been instructed that it is not new and fanciful doctrines nor human suppositions which the
people need, but the testimony of men who know and practice the truth, men who understand and obey the charge given to
Timothy: “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine.” [2
Timothy 4:2.] GW 305.1
My brethren, walk firmly, decidedly, your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. You may be sure that pure and
undefiled religion is not a sensational religion. God has not laid upon any one the burden of encouraging an appetite for
speculative doctrines and theories. Keep these things out of your teaching. Do not allow them to enter into your experience. Let
not your life-work be marred by them. GW 305.2
It is time that church members understood that everywhere there is work
to be done in the Lord’s vineyard. No one is to wait for a regular process
before they make any efforts. They should take up the work right where
they are. There should be many at work in what are called “irregular
lines.” If one hundred laborers would step out of the “regular lines” and
take up self-sacrificing work such as Brother Shireman has done, souls
would be won to the Lord. And the workers would understand by
experience what it means to be laborers together with God. 16LtMs. Lt
109, 1901, par. 12
I want my brethren to begin to understand some things for themselves.
God alone, by the quickening, vivifying influence of His Holy Spirit, can
enable men to distinguish between the sacred and the common. God alone
can make men understand that working on regular lines has led to
irregular practices. God alone can make men's minds as they should be.
The time has come when we should hear less in favor of the regular lines.
If we can get away from the regular lines into something which, though
irregular, is after God's order, it may cut away something of the irregular
working which has led away from Bible principles. 20MR 143.2
If we can get away from the regular lines into something which, though irregular, is
after God's order, it may cut away something of the irregular working which has led
away from Bible principles. 20MR 143.2
Luke 9: 49, 50; And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy
name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 50. And Jesus said unto him,
Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
It does not follow that because a man is not ordained as a preacher, he cannot work for
God. 16LtMs, Ms 81a, 1901, par. 21
On one occasion the disciple John came to Jesus, saying, “Master, we saw one casting out
devils in thy name, and he followeth not us; and we forbade him because he followeth not
us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not; for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my
name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part.”
[Mark 9:38-40.] 11LtMs, Lt 81, 1896, par. 12
The spirit that has been shown to others by some in positions of trust in our institutions
does not harmonize with these words. The wrong spirit they have manifested has been
caught by others, and if zeal and wisdom were shown in setting the heads of our
institutions right, so many would not be turned out of the way. “Beware of the leaven of
the Pharisees,” said Christ, guard against the influence which they exert. [Matthew 16:6.]
11LtMs, Lt 81, 1896, par. 13
Some of our leading men are inclined to indulge the spirit manifested by the apostle John when he
said: “Master, we saw one casting out devils in Thy name; and we forbade him, because he
followeth not with us.” Organization and discipline are essential, but there is now very great danger
of a departure from the simplicity of the gospel of Christ. What we need is less dependence upon
mere form and ceremony, and far more of the power of true godliness. If their life and character
are exemplary, let all work who will, in any capacity. Although they may not conform exactly to
your methods, not a word should be spoken to condemn or discourage them. When the Pharisees
desired Jesus to silence the children who sang His praise, the Saviour said: “If these should hold
their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.” Prophecy must be fulfilled. So in these days,
the work must be done. There are many departments of labor; let everyone act a part as best he
can. The man with one talent is not to bury that in the earth. God has given to every man his work
according to his ability. Those to whom larger trusts and capabilities have been committed should
not endeavor to silence others who are less able or experienced. Men with one talent may reach a
class that those with two or five talents cannot approach. Great and small alike are chosen vessels
to bear the water of life to thirsting souls. Let not those who preach the word lay their hands upon
the humblest worker and say: “You must labor in this channel or not work at all.” Hands off,
brethren. Let everyone work in his own sphere, with his own armor on, doing whatever he can do in
his humble way. Strengthen his hands in the work. This is no time for pharisaism to control. Let
God work through whom He will. The message must go. 5T 461.2
When your letter and Elder Kilgore's, regarding the work in Nashville, were read to me, a
great burden came upon me, and for a time I thought that my reason would give way. I
was so weary, having just come from the Portland camp meeting and having labored very
hard while there, that I was in no condition to have such matters brought before me. It
takes so long for our leading brethren to read beneath the surface that I feared that
perhaps I had said something which would have been better deferred in regard to the
publishing work in Nashville being conducted as separate and independent from the work
in Battle Creek. So often the same old difficulties arise and are presented in regard to
disturbing the “regular lines.” But God will work in some way to make His people
understand that the regular lines have become full of irregular practices. [The phrase
“regular lines” referred to the publishing work at Battle Creek. The “irregular practices”
included the exercise of kingly authority (PM 132), the printing of “The Soul-Destroying
Theories of Romanism” (Testimonies for the Church 8:92), and a variety of other
improprieties. (See The Publishing Ministry, 127-178.) Meanwhile, in 1894, Ellen White's
son, Edson, had begun a privately supported ministry for the blacks in Mississippi and
Tennessee. Edson's sacrificial publishing ventures in the South, while independent of
the “regular lines,” received Ellen White's strong sympathy and support.] 20MR 142.4

In the night season I have been pleading with God to reveal to every one of us the beauty of
holiness. Let us keep our eyes fixed upon the perfection of His attributes and determine that, come
what may, this beauty of holiness shall be reflected in our own character. The Lord is coming. The
end is near. We cannot afford to lose any time. Too often we wrap up the precious truth so that its
real beauty does not shine forth. We need to be melted by God’s grace and sanctified through the
truth. 25LtMs, Ms 22, 1913, par. 29
